The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s cut through the noise and talk about what’s on offer at Melvich. It’s a river mouth set-up, exposed to the north-west, and it’s gonna be a bit of a waiting game for the most part.
Right now, we’re looking at a pretty grim stretch. From Friday the 21st right through the weekend and into the start of next week, it’s a write-off. The wind is all over the place, mostly cross or cross-onshore, and the swell is weak and messy. That combined energy is sitting at a paltry 441 at best, dropping right down. You’re not missing anything. Plan for a few days of no real surf.
The one true standout, the one that’s got my attention, is Monday the 24th of August. That morning is the real deal. The swell jumps up to 7ft from the WNW, with a long period of 11 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is a massive 1126, which is a lot of power. But with a south-easterly cross-offshore breeze, it’s going to be clean. The water temp is about 57°F, which is totally normal for this time of year. This is a day for experienced surfers only – that size is pushing into the big stuff, and the river mouth can get tricky. If you’re solid, get on it. The morning session is the pick; the afternoon drops off a bit to 6ft and loses some of that magic.
After that, the pulse fades quickly. Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th are gutless, with the swell dropping to 1ft and energy down to 40. We’ll see a small, ordinary bump on Thursday the 27th with 2ft, but it’s nothing to write home about. Then we hit a bit of a gap. Friday the 28th has some fresh wind and lumpy 4ft, but it’s not a surfing wind. The rest of the week into early September is very quiet, with small, weak swells and mostly cross-onshore winds. There’s a tiny, glassy window on Monday the 31st of August with 2ft, but it’s ordinary.
Looking further out, around the 5th of September, we get a whisper of something. The morning shows a 4ft swell from the north with a gentle offshore wind from the south. The energy is only 181, so it’s not going to be big, but the conditions will be clean. It’s a long-range promise, so don’t book the time off yet, but it’s something to keep an eye on.
So, bottom line: the only true standout is the morning of Monday the 24th of August. Everything else is either flat, onshore, or too small to bother with.
Rusty.
