The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be honest with you, it’s a pretty grim stretch for most of it. We’re looking at Cayton Bay Bunkers, and the story is mostly one of persistent cross-onshore winds and messy, lumpy conditions. The water’s sitting at 60°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only bright spot.
The first week is a write-off. From Tuesday the 14th right through to the early hours of Friday the 24th, it’s just poor surf conditions. The wind is mostly from the north or north-northeast, blowing cross-onshore, and the swell is tiny, often under 3ft, with a short, weak period of just 4 to 8 seconds. The combined energy is pitiful, mostly in the double digits, with a few days in the low hundreds, like Saturday the 18th (240 and 303) and Sunday the 19th (493 and 528), but those are ruined by the wind. It’s just choppy, lumpy, and not worth the paddle.
Then, finally, on the morning of Friday the 24th, we get a tiny window. The wind swings to the west, going glassy, and the swell is 3ft from the east with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is 85, so it’s weak, but it’s the only time the conditions are surfable. It’s not a standout by any means, but it’s the best we’ve got. The swell is small and weak, but with glassy conditions it’ll be clean. This is really the only one to look at, and it’s a long way off.
After that, it’s back to the same old story: north winds, cross-onshore, and tiny, weak swell for the rest of the forecast. There’s a big gap from the 14th all the way to the 24th with nothing worth getting excited about, and then after that brief window, it’s another poor run.
Honestly, for a beach setup, with this wind, it’s looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for most of this period.
