Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch ahead. The next few weeks are looking mostly flat or blown out, so don't get your hopes up too high. The only place on the radar is Scarborough South Bay, and even that is a long shot for most of the period.
We kick things off with a proper gap. Right from Sunday the 5th of July through to the morning of Saturday the 12th of July, the surf is tiny – we're talking ankle-snappers in the 0.3 ft to 3 ft range. The wind is mostly cross or cross-off, so it’s clean enough, but there's simply no energy. The combined energy is barely a whisper, sitting between 1 and 85 for the whole first week. The water temp is 58°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing crazy there.
Then we hit a bit of a pulse on Monday the 13th of July. Swell bumps up to 5 ft to 5 ft from the NNE with a short period of just 7 seconds. But the wind goes cross-onshore at 16 to 19 mph, making it choppy and lumpy. The combined energy climbs into the moderate range (170 to 242), but the quality is poor. It’s surfable if you’re desperate, but it’s not good.
The best chance you’ll get is Saturday the 19th of July. The morning sees a 3 ft swell from the north with a 7-second period, and the wind swings to a light cross-off from the SW at 9 mph, cleaning things right up. The combined energy is a moderate 108. This is the only window where it’s actually “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s not a standout by any means, but it’s the best on offer.
After that, things get messy again. By Monday the 20th of July, the swell picks up to 4 ft to 5 ft with a longer 10-second period, which sounds promising, but it’s hammered by a cross-onshore wind at 12 to 16 mph. The energy jumps to a strong 313 to 378, but it’s choppy and sloppy. Wouldn’t bother.
Overall, this is a dry spell. If you’re really jonesing for a paddle, the morning of the 19th is your window. The rest? Save your energy.
