The Lowdown
Alright, I'm Rusty, and I'm looking at the forecast for Scarborough South Bay over the next 16 days. Gotta be honest, this is a grim run. The whole 16-day window is a massive gap with no real green lights for a good session.
We start off on Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th with some swell in the water, about 4ft coming from the NE and NNE. But the wind is a total buzzkill. It's a cross-onshore breeze at 15 to 18 mph, just tearing the surface up, making it choppy and lumpy. The energy is there, with a moderate 135 (combined energy) on Monday morning, but it's all wasted with that wind. The water is a touch warmer than normal, around 61°, which is about 4° above average for this time of year.
The middle of the week, from the 15th to the 17th, the swell drops off a cliff. We're looking at tiny 1ft to 3ft waves with a short, weak period of 4 to 6 seconds. The wind stays bad, either cross or cross-on. The combined energy values are weak, getting as low as 11. It's not worth getting your feet wet.
We get a little blip on the 18th and 19th. The swell tries to build back up, hitting 5ft to 5ft from the NNE on Saturday and Sunday. The period stretches to 7 seconds, then 9 seconds on Sunday, and the energy climbs to a moderate 242 and then 318. That's the most promising-looking swell of the whole run. But the wind is still cross-shore, so it's not going to be clean. It's a real tease.
After that, the bottom falls out completely. From the 20th of July all the way to the 28th, the swell is tiny. We're consistently looking at 0.3ft to 3ft. The only good news is that the wind turns offshore from the SW and WSW on a few days, like the 21st, 22nd, and 27th, promising glassy conditions. But with waves that small, it's a flat spell. The energy values are all in the single digits or low teens. It's a long, long lull.
So, the best of a bad bunch is the morning of Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th. The swell is there, about 5ft, and the energy is building. But with that cross-shore wind, for a beach and point setup like this, it's honestly looking more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. It's a tough one to swallow.
Rusty.
