The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Scarborough South Bay.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day stretch is a real bummer. There’s not a single day where the surf is any good. The whole forecast is a flat, windy mess, so we’re looking at a solid blank run with no real surf on offer.
Right now, we’ve got some small, weak swell on the 19th of July, but it’s coming in at 7 ft from the NNE with a short, weak 9-second period, and it’s all chopped up by a fresh cross-shore wind. The combined energy is moderate at best (692), but the conditions are just poor. That same northerly wind sticks around for days, keeping the surface lumpy and ugly. The water temp is 60°, which is about normal for this time of year.
We see a bit of a tease on the 24th of July with a light offshore wind in the morning, but the swell is tiny – just 2 ft from the NNE with a 6-second period and a combined energy of only 31. It’s clean, but there’s nothing to ride. The next day, the 25th, is similar with a bit of cross-offshore wind, but again, the swell is flat at 2 ft.
Then, the 28th of July brings a big shift in the wind, with a strong offshore blowing from the west at 22 mph, which would clean things up, but there’s no swell at all. The combined energy is zero. That offshore wind sticks around for a couple of days, and we get a little bump of 5 ft on the 29th of July morning, but it’s a short-period 8-second windswell from the north, and the wind is still a fresh cross-offshore, so the quality is just not there. The combined energy hits 287, but it’s still a “poor surf conditions” call.
Through the rest of July and into August, the swell just fades away completely. The wind stays onshore or cross-shore, and the wave heights drop to nothing. By the 3rd of August, we’re looking at 1 ft with a 8-second period and a combined energy of 54. It’s a total washout.
So, there you have it. Nothing to get excited about. The break is a beach and point setup, and it’s just not co-operating. This is one of those times where the forecast looks more interesting for a kite than a surfboard. Keep an eye on the charts, though – it tends not to stay this poor for long.
Rusty.
