The Lowdown
Alright, let’s take a look at what’s on offer for Scarborough South Bay over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim stretch ahead. We’re looking at a really long run of flat or poor quality surf, with no real standout days to get excited about.
The water temperature is sitting at 60°F which is about average for this time of year, so at least a wetsuit is all you’ll need.
Right now, Sunday the 19th kicks off with some 7ft swell from the NNE, but it’s rubbish. The wind is a fresh cross-shore from the NNW at 19 mph, and the wave energy is moderate (775). The whole thing is lumpy and messy. Not worth paddling out.
Monday the 20th drops quickly to 4ft, but the wind is cross-onshore from the NNE, and the energy is down to 228. Still poor.
From Tuesday the 21st, the swell collapses into tiny, weak stuff – under 3ft – with energy dropping below 100, and it stays that way for days. The wind is mostly cross-onshore or cross-shore, and the wave comment is consistently “poor surf conditions.” There’s a brief moment on Friday the 24th morning where the wind goes light and clean, but the swell is only 2ft with a short 7-second period and energy of just 48. Not enough to push you around.
The end of July and start of August doesn’t get any better. There’s a small bump on Sunday the 2nd of August with 3ft from the NE, but the wind is cross-shore and the energy is still weak (114). Then by Monday the 3rd of August, we get glassy conditions but the swell is only 2ft with a tiny 5-second period.
This is a blank run of over two weeks with no surf worth chasing. For this area, it’s a normal quiet spell, but it’s frustrating. The only positive is that when it gets this flat, it usually doesn’t stay that way forever. Forecasts can change, but right now, leave the board at home.
