The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Scarborough South Bay over the next 16 days.
To be honest, the outlook is a tough one for us paddle surfers. There’s a long stretch of poor surf conditions that kicks off the period. From Tuesday the 14th right through to Friday the 24th of July, the wave comment is consistently “poor surf conditions” with a score of zero. That’s a solid 10-day gap of nothing worth getting wet for. The swell is small and weak, the wind is almost always messing things up, and the energy just isn’t there.
The first glimmer of anything rideable shows up on the morning of Friday the 24th of July. We get a tiny pulse of 3ft swell from the east with a period of just 6 seconds. The combined energy is weak at 85. But the real story here is the wind: it’s a clean offshore from the west at only 3 mph. That’s about as good as it gets for wind, and it’ll make the water glassy. The water temperature is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, coming in at 60°F. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The swell is small, and the short period means it won’t have much push. For a beginner, the 3ft is fine, but it’s not going to be a day to remember.
Unfortunately, that clean window is short-lived. By Friday afternoon, the wind swings back to a cross-onshore, and conditions deteriorate again. The rest of the outlook up to the 29th of July is more of the same: small, weak, and messy. The swell stays under 3ft, the period never gets above 9 seconds, and the wind is almost always cross or onshore. There’s nothing here that stands out as a good bet.
Honestly, it’s a pretty barren run for Scarborough South Bay. For this stretch of the coast, a blank run like this is more normal than not. Keep your eyes on the forecasts, though, because things can change. For now, the 24th of July morning is your only real chance to get a clean, if small, wave.
