The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real about Scarborough South Bay. I've been watching this stretch, and I gotta tell ya, it's a tough run ahead. The data is showing a whole lot of nothing for a very long stretch. There’s no easy way to say this: the first solid surf recommendation doesn't appear until over a week from now, and even then, it’s a marginal situation.
We are looking at a gap of about 7 days of flat or messy, unrideable conditions. The wind is just all wrong, and the swell energy is weak. For the first week, from July 14th right through to the 20th, it's a write-off. The swell is tiny and short-period, mostly from the NNE, but every session is plagued by cross or cross-onshore winds, keeping the surface choppy and lumpy. The combined energy values are all under 100 (90 or less), which tells you there's just no push. It's not worth paddling out.
The sea surface is sitting around average for the time of year here, no major temperature anomalies to report, but with no surf, it doesn’t matter much anyway.
Now, on Tuesday the 21st of July in the morning, things try to turn. A light westerly offshore breeze comes through, cleaning things up. The swell is still tiny, only 2 ft from the NNE with a short period of 6 seconds and weak energy (49). But, it’s clean. For a surfer desperate for a glide, that morning window might be your only real chance in this entire two-week stretch. After that, the wind goes wrong again, and the following days see the swell drop to damn near nothing.
Looking further out, the end of July has flat spells and some offshore winds, but the swell is completely absent, with combined energy values of 0 or in the single digits. It’s a brutal outlook.
Honestly, this is one of those patches where you’re better off taking the longboard out for a flat-water paddle if you get that morning glass on the 21st, or just waiting for a better forecast. It’s a blank run, but that happens here. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about.
