The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it, mate. Looks like we're in for a bit of a wait for the good stuff this time around.
The short version? We've got a long gap of nothing special before a late-breaking window of opportunity. The best bet is right at the very end of the forecast, and it's a bit of a gamble, but it's all we've got.
Right now, the immediate outlook is grim. From Friday, 17 July through to the end of the month, it's a write-off. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, and the energy is weak. We're seeing a bit of a pulse on Sunday 19 July, with a north-northeast swell pushing 8 ft, but the wind is a stiff cross-shore from the north at 16 mph, so it's messy with a strong cross-chop. The combined energy hits 1971, but it's a lumpy, blown-out mess. Not worth paddling out for.
There are a few days in there with tiny waves and glassy conditions, like the morning of Friday 24 July, but the swell is only 2 ft with a short period. It's clean, but there's nothing to ride.
So, we're looking at about a two-week gap of poor to flat surf.
Now, the one bright spot. It's a long way off, but on Saturday 1 August, things look like they might finally come together. The morning session at Scarborough South Bay could be the one. We've got a 4 ft north-northeast swell pushing in – not huge, but with a combined energy of 227, there's enough to be fun. The real kicker is the wind: a light, 6 mph cross-offshore breeze from the south-southwest. That's a clean, glassy morning, mate. The water temp is about 60°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so it's not a shock to the system.
Just keep in mind this spot is a beach and point break that's fairly exposed to the north swell, and it can get crowded. It's not a bank of perfection, but after this long dry spell, any clean wave with a bit of push will feel like a gift. The afternoon on that same day gets a bit more southerly wind and gets lumpy again, so make sure you get out early.
Rusty.
