Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Scarborough South Bay over the next couple of weeks.
Truth be told, it’s a bit of a quiet period ahead. We’ve got a lot of days with small, weak swell and the wind isn’t playing ball much of the time. The wave energy is low across the board – you’re looking at numbers in the low double digits and teens for the combined energy, which is weak. There’s nothing that really jumps out as a proper standout session.
Let’s start from Saturday the 4th. It’s small – around 2ft of swell from the north, with a short 7-second period. The wind is offshore from the WSW at 16 mph, which would normally be good, but with that tiny swell and weak energy (22), it’s barely worth getting wet. The water temp is 57°, which is about normal for this time of year.
That sets the tone. We roll through Sunday the 5th, Monday the 6th, Tuesday the 7th – all mornings and afternoons with swell under 2ft, mostly from the north or NNW, very short periods (4 to 6 seconds), and combined energy that barely hits double figures. The wind is cross-offshore or cross-shore, so the surface is clean, but there’s just no push.
Wednesday the 8th is more of the same – 2ft north swell, 7 seconds, clean with a light north wind, but the energy is still weak at 24. Not enough to get excited about.
Thursday the 9th sees a tiny bump – 2ft from the north, 8-second period, and the energy creeps up to 46. Still small, though. Wind is cross-shore from the SE at 9 mph, so it’s clean-ish but not offshore. Not a day to change plans for.
From Friday the 10th right through to Saturday the 18th, it’s a pretty grim stretch. The swell stays under 3ft for the most part, with periods bouncing between 4 and 8 seconds. The wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, often from the east or north, making for choppy, messy conditions. The energy stays weak, maxing out at 88 on Sunday the 12th morning, but that’s with a 3ft east swell and onshore wind – not a recipe for quality.
The one tiny glimmer is on Saturday the 11th afternoon, where we see 3ft from the east, but it’s onshore wind at 12 mph and the period is only 6 seconds. Combined energy of 72 is still weak, and the wave comment is clear – poor surf conditions. It’s a beach and point setup, and with the wind and small size, it’s honestly looking more interesting for a kite than a paddle.
We finally see a slight change on Sunday the 19th morning. Swell is 3ft from the NNE with an 8-second period, and the energy hits 64. The wind is cross-shore from the NNW at 12 mph, so it’s lumpy but not terrible. Still, it’s not a standout.
So, to be straight with you – there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. It’s a blank run that’s a bit frustrating, but for this area, it’s not totally unusual to have a patch of small, wind-affected surf. The outlook can always change, so keep an eye on it, but for now, don’t be rushing to the beach.
Rusty.
