The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, looking at what's on the cards for Itaúna over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, we've got a bit of a mixed bag coming up. The first few days are pretty ordinary, with some messy conditions and smaller swell. The real standout is shaping up to be that Wednesday the 29th, which looks like a proper session for the experienced crew. There's also a sneaky, glassy little window on Tuesday the 28th that could be a nice surprise.
So, starting off, Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th are a write-off for anything decent. The swell is there, around 5ft to 6ft from the S/SSE with a moderate 11-second period, giving a moderate wave energy (801 to 932), but the wind is all over the place – cross, cross-on, and cross-off – making for a messy, choppy sea. Not worth paddling out for.
Thursday the 16th through to Tuesday the 22nd is a long stretch of small, weak surf. Swell heights drop to 2ft to 4ft, and the energy is low (87 to 282). The wind is generally clean or cross-off, but there's just not enough push to get excited about. It's a period of ordinary conditions.
Now, Thursday the 23rd brings a pulse of much bigger, longer-period energy. We're looking at a 8ft SSW swell with a 13-second period, which is a proper groundswell. The combined energy jumps right up to 2162, which is strong. But the wind is light cross-shore, so it's going to be a bit lumpy and tricky. This is not a beginner's wave at this size; it's for the experienced crew. Friday the 24th keeps the solid S swell at 5ft to 5ft and a 12-second period, but the wind picks up, especially in the afternoon, making it messy.
Alright, the pick of the fortnight. Wednesday the 29th morning. Itaúna is a point break that handles an E swell best, and we're getting a 8ft S swell with an 11-second period. The combined energy is a solid 1237. The wind is from the WNW, which is cross-offshore, and it's described as clean. This is an excellent forecast for experienced surfers. It's going to be a powerful, clean wave, but at 8ft, it's too big for learning. The crowd factor is "sometimes," so you might have some company, but it’s a well-known spot.
Also, keep an eye on Tuesday the 28th morning. The swell is small at 3ft, but the period is a very long 14 seconds from the SSW. The kicker here is the wind: glassy. Zero wind. It’s going to be a beautiful, clean morning. The wave energy is moderate (402), so it'll be a fun, cruisy session on a point break that loves that long-period groundswell.
Water temp is sitting at 72°F, which is basically bang on average for this time of year. No surprises there.
For the rest of the second week, Saturday the 26th morning has a fun 5ft E swell with a clean cross-off wind, and energy around 604. It's a good, solid option, but not the standout that the 29th is.
So, to sum it up: the next week and a half is mostly small and average. The two days to really circle on the calendar are the 28th for a glassy, long-period treat, and the 29th for a proper, powerful, expert-level session.
Rusty.
