The Lowdown
Alright, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been eyeballing the charts for this stretch. Let’s break it down.
We’ve got a slow start, with small waves and ordinary conditions. The real action builds toward the end of the first week and peaks around the 24th and 25th. That’s your window.
Itaúna is a point break for advanced surfers only. It’s very consistent, exposed to the east, and the best swell direction is from the east. The water is 72°F, which is about average for this time of year.
Tuesday morning, the 18th, has 3 ft swell from the east with a short 7-second period. A light NE cross-offshore wind keeps it clean. Wave energy is moderate (147). Afternoon turns choppy.
Wednesday the 19th is smaller: 2 ft, still clean in the morning, but afternoon gets messy. Thursday the 20th is the same story – small, clean mornings, then ruined by cross-shore winds.
Friday the 21st morning sees 3 ft at 8 seconds, clean again, but still ordinary.
Saturday the 22nd brings a jump in size, but the wind is terrible. 5 ft in the morning, 6 ft in the afternoon, with cross-onshore winds and chop. The energy is strong (285 to 908), but it’s poor quality. This is more of a kite-surfing day.
Sunday the 23rd is a maybe: 5 ft from the SSW with a 9-second period, but the wind is light cross-onshore. Energy is moderate (391). The morning is better, but it’s marginal.
Monday the 24th is the start of the real swell. 5 ft to 6 ft from the SSW, with a 11-second period – that’s groundswell. Energy is strong (649 to 943). The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s not glassy, but it’s the best of the week so far. The point will handle the long period well.
The standout is Tuesday the 25th. The morning has 8 ft from the south with a 12-second period, and the energy is very strong (1850). The wind is cross-shore, but the afternoon cleans up: 7 ft, still from the south, with a cross-offshore NE wind. That afternoon session is clean. This is big, heavy, and only for experts. Expect crowds.
After Tuesday, the swell drops fast. Wednesday the 26th still has 5 ft, but the wind is howling at 22 mph, making it rough. The rest of the forecast is a long, flat gap. A few tiny, glassy mornings pop up, like the 28th with a 1 ft SSE swell and a 13-second period, but there’s no energy (99). It’s flat.
So, bottom line: if you’re an expert, the 25th afternoon is your session. The 24th and 25th mornings are next best, but be ready for crowds. After that, it’s a long dry spell.
Rusty.
