It’s a bit of a slow burner this week. The first few days are mostly messy, but we have a couple of solid windows for the more experienced crew. After that, it goes quiet for a good stretch before a promising-looking window shows up late in the run—if the long-range models are kind to us.

Monday morning at Meio da Praia is a write-off for a clean paddle. There’s a solid 6ft south-southwest swell with an 11-second period, but the wind is blowing onshore from the SSE at 6 mph, chopping it all up. The energy is strong (1316), but the bumpy surface means it’s more of a kite session than a surfing one. The afternoon is similar—bigger at 8ft from the south with a 13-second period, but the onshore wind from the south at 9 mph keeps it ugly.

Tuesday morning is still messy with cross-on wind and a big 8ft south swell at 13 seconds. Too much power and too much wind.

But Tuesday afternoon is a serious standout for the experts only. The swell hits a solid 10ft from the south with a 13-second period, and the wind switches light and cross-shore from the ESE at 6 mph. That’s clean as a whistle for that kind of size. The combined energy is massive (2659), and with waves over 8ft, this is strictly for the big-wave chargers.

Wednesday morning is your best bet if you’re an experienced surfer looking for a clean session. You’ve got a light, cross-off breeze from the ENE at 6 mph, grooming a 7ft south swell (12-second period). The energy is still strong (1396) and the conditions will be clean.

Thursday morning offers a similar clean window with a cross-off NE breeze at 9 mph and a 7ft swell.

From Friday afternoon, the surf starts to fade and we hit a real dry spell. From Friday the 14th all the way through to about Thursday the 20th of August, the swell drops below 3ft for the most part, and the winds are generally onshore or cross-onshore. There’s a good four or five days there where it’s not worth dragging a board out.

Things perk up on the morning of Friday the 21st of August. A clean cross-off breeze from the NE at 16 mph meets a 5ft south-southwest swell with a long 12-second period. The energy is strong (1577) and it looks like a clean, powerful morning. Worth keeping an eye on.

But the real long-range tease is Sunday the 23rd of August. The morning looks gorgeous—just a whisper of wind from the NE at 3 mph, with a clean 6ft swell from the SSW on an 11-second period. The energy is moderate-to-strong (930) and the forecast calls for excellent conditions. It’s a long way out, so call it a promising possibility for now, but it’s the one to watch.

To wrap it up: Tuesday afternoon is for the big-wave pros only. Wednesday morning is the cleanest option for experienced surfers this week. Everyone else should keep an eye on that Sunday the 23rd—if it holds, it could be a cracker.
