The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s comin’ down at Praia do Pero.

First thing to say: it’s a bit of a slow start this week. We’ve got a bunch of days where the onshore wind just won’t let up, so don’t expect much action until we hit Tuesday the 15th. The surf’s pretty flat and messy before that.

Now, Tuesday morning, 15 September, that’s where the magic starts to show. We’re talkin’ a clean 2ft swell from the south, with a period of 11 seconds. The wind? Glassy. Dead calm. That’s a rare treat for this stretch. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The combined energy is moderate (391), and the southeast part of the swell window gets some love. The wave direction isn’t perfectly aligned with the optimum east swell for this spot, but when it’s glassy like that, you take it. It’s a consistent beginner-friendly break, so even if the sets are a bit soft, the paddle-out will be easy. Crowds can pop up here sometimes, but on a Tuesday morning mid-September, you might get a little space.

The real standout, though, is Monday the 21st in the afternoon. That’s the one to circle. The swell bumps up to 6ft from the east, period around 8 seconds, and the wind swings to a clean cross-offshore from the SSW. That’s gonna put some shape on the wave. Combined energy is strong (504), and the conditions are clean. This is the best on offer across the whole run. Not huge, but solid for the area, and the wind’s workin’ with you, not against you.

Tuesday morning the 22nd is another glassy session, with a 5ft east swell and no wind. That’s a good backup if you miss Monday.

After that, things get a bit gnarly. From Wednesday the 23rd onward, the wind picks up out of the northeast and east-northeast, blowin’ cross-onshore and choppy. The swell stays in the 4ft to 5ft range, but the quality drops off. There’s a brief window on Saturday the 26th morning with a light wind and a 4ft east-northeast swell, but it’s marginal.

Overall, the best bet is Monday afternoon the 21st. Tuesday morning the 15th is a close second for a clean, relaxed session. Don’t bother with the rest unless you’re desperate.

Keep your eyes open, and remember—forecasts can shift, but this is how it’s lookin’ right now.

Rusty.
