The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s check the surf for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, it’s a tough stretch. We’ve got a long gap of poor conditions before anything really worth paddling out for shows up. The first few days are a write-off with onshore winds and messy, weak waves.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Wednesday, August 5th. The morning looks magic – glassy conditions with a light breeze from the south. The swell is a clean 3ft from the south with a nice 11-second period, giving it some shape. The combined energy sits at 313 (moderate), and the water temp is about average for the time of year here. This is the best window of the whole outlook for the beginner-friendly Praia do Pero. The wind is glass, so it’ll be clean and fun. It’s a consistent spot, and the crowd is sometimes there, so you might have a few others out.
After that, we get a bit of a mixed bag. Thursday, August 6th morning is also glassy, with a 4ft swell from the east-northeast, but it’s a short 6-second period, so it’ll be a bit weak and soft. The energy is 263 (moderate). Still, a good option for a beginner wave.
Then the conditions take a turn for the worse again until Monday, August 10th morning. That morning brings a clean 3ft south swell with a 12-second period and light offshore winds from the south-southwest. The energy is 328 (moderate). Another solid session for the learner crew.
But hold onto your boards. Wednesday, August 12th is a different beast. The swell jumps to 12ft from the south with a 16-second period – that’s a very long period groundswell. The combined energy hits 5796 (very strong). This is massive. The wind is clean offshore from the southwest in the morning. However, this is way too big for beginners and is really only for experts. The break is an exposed beach, and with that long period, it’s going to be a straight, heavy closeout. For the experienced crew, this is a serious, heavy-water session, but it’s not for everyone. The forecast is less certain this far out, but if it materializes, it’s a beast.
The following days see the swell drop but remain solid, with Thursday the 13th offering a 6ft swell from the south with a 13-second period. The wind is light cross-shore in the morning, but the conditions are called marginal. The energy is 1522 (strong), but it’s a bit of a gamble.
So, to sum it up: the standout is Wednesday, August 5th morning for the clean, glassy conditions on a small, fun south swell. The other real highlight is Wednesday, August 12th for the massive, expert-only groundswell, but it’s a long way out and only for the brave.
Stay wet, stay salty.
Rusty.
