The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for Caravelas over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, straight up, the first week is a bit of a mixed bag. There's a bit of a wait for the good stuff. We've got a little window of clean surf early on Wednesday the 19th, but it's pretty short-lived. The water temp is sitting at a nice, normal 72°, so no surprises there.
The standout for the whole run is shaping up to be Monday the 24th of August. We've got a solid new S swell pushing in, with the combined energy hitting a strong 1,280 (moderate to strong wave energy). The morning sees a 5ft S swell with a long 13-second period, and the afternoon bumps up to a beefy 7ft from the same direction. The wind is a light cross-onshore, so it won't be glassy, but the power and length of the swell will make for a wicked session. This is a proper groundswell, so expect some good shape and long walls, especially for a beach break. The period is long, so you'll get those nice gaps between sets to paddle out.
Tuesday the 25th keeps the energy going with a 8ft S swell in the morning (combined energy of 2,097 – very strong), and the wind is a clean cross-offshore. That's a lot of power, so it's for the more experienced crew only. The swell is still from the south with a long 14-second period, so again, point and reef breaks around the area will handle it best.
Before that, Friday the 21st of August has a clean 6ft ENE swell with a fresh offshore wind blowing. The energy is moderate (404), and the period is short at 7 seconds, so it'll be a bit more crumbly and less powerful, but still fun for a paddle.
There's a bit of a dry spell from the 22nd to the 23rd with tiny, weak waves, but then the South swell kicks in. After the 25th, the swell drops off a bit, but we get another chance on the 27th and 28th with clean offshore winds and a 6ft to 6ft ENE swell, though the period is still short.
Looking further out, the 31st of August and the 1st of September have some promise. The 31st morning has a 3ft S swell with a long 11-second period and light winds, and the 1st of September morning has a 6ft ENE swell with a clean cross-offshore breeze. These are a bit more speculative this far out, but worth keeping an eye on.
So, for the best of the lot, I'm calling Monday the 24th of August. That 7ft S swell with the long period and moderate energy is the one to circle on the calendar. The crowds are "sometimes" there, so you might have a few mates out, but it's worth it.
Rusty.
