The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. We’re talkin’ about Figuera, and I’ll be honest with ya – the first week is a tough one for surfers. There’s a real dry spell from the start, with nothing worth paddling out for on Friday the 17th, Saturday the 18th, or Sunday the 19th. The swell’s small and weak, with combined energy barely hitting 163 (moderate) at best, and mostly chump change. Monday morning the 20th is still a no-go, but by Monday afternoon a little puff of east swell shows up at 4ft, but it’s short period (7 seconds) and messy. That pattern drags on through to the end of the month – small swell, weak energy, and mostly poor conditions. The wind’s often offshore, which is nice, but the waves just aren’t there.
Now, the real glimmer comes at the end of the month. On Wednesday the 29th, the morning session at Figuera is the standout. Swell is 4ft from the south at 14 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell, long period. The combined energy hits 687 (moderate-to-strong), and the wind is light offshore from the ENE, so it’ll be glassy and clean. This is a solid intermediate wave, but the long period means it’ll be better on a point or reef than a beach break if it’s breaking straight. Keep an eye on that. The water temp is 72°, about average for the time of year, so no worries there.
The next few days after that go a bit sideways. Thursday the 30th gets a 8ft south swell, but it’s short period (10 seconds) and onshore wind, making it a messy, expert-only affair. Friday the 31st has a 7-7ft swell from the SSE, 9 seconds, with strong offshore winds – clean but hard to paddle into, and the energy is very strong (1542). That’s a kite surfer’s dream more than a paddle surfer’s if you ask me. Saturday the 1st of August is still marginal.
So, to wrap it up: the best bet in this 16-day window is Wednesday morning the 29th of July. It’s the cleanest, most promising session. The rest of the time is a long wait with small, weak surf or tricky conditions. Don’t get your hopes too high for the second week – it’s got size but not much quality.
