The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for the next couple of weeks at Figuera. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but there’s some real promise building, especially for the experienced crew.

The first few days are a write-off. Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are flat and messy, with onshore winds and weak, short-period slop. You’re not missing a thing. Just sit tight. The combined energy is a measly 38 to 956, just weak to moderate junk.

The real window opens up Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. The wind switches to offshore from the ENE, cleaning things right up. We’re looking at a solid 6ft swell from the SSW, with a moderate 10-second period and a combined energy of 570 (moderate). It’s set to be very good surf, with clean lines. The water temperature feels about average for this time of year, so no need for a thick suit.

Sunday afternoon starts to get a little tricky with a cross-offshore wind, but it stays clean. The swell holds at 6ft.

Now, Monday the 24th is where it gets serious. The swell jumps up to 7ft from the S, with a much longer 13-second period. The combined energy spikes to 1585 (strong). The morning is clean with a cross-offshore breeze, but the waves are already getting sizeable. By Monday afternoon, it’s a full-on 10ft S swell, with a 14-second period and a combined energy of 3119 (very strong). The conditions are clean, but the message is clear: this is for experienced surfers only. Beginners, stay out of the water.

Tuesday the 25th is the standout. The morning sees a 10ft S swell, 14-second period, and a massive 3335 combined energy. The wind is offshore from the east, creating moderate offshore and clean conditions. The wave comment says it’s too big for this break, but for the experts, it’s a goldmine. By Tuesday afternoon, the swell drops to 8ft, but the wind goes light offshore from the east. The conditions are described as “excellent surf for experienced surfers.” The energy is still very strong at 2606.

Wednesday the 26th continues the run. The morning brings a 8ft S swell with a 16-second period—very long-period groundswell. The energy is 3267 (very strong). The wind is offshore from the ENE. This is going to be a powerful, clean day, but that long period will make the sets a bit more spaced out. It’s best at Figuera, which is a reef/point set-up, so the long period should actually work in your favor. The afternoon sees a slight drop to 8ft, but it’s still clean.

After that, the swell starts to fade. Thursday the 27th is still clean with 7ft to 6ft S swell, but the wind is starting to howl out of the ENE at 22 to 25 mph. It’s clean but hard to paddle into. Friday the 28th drops to 3ft, and from there it’s a slow decline into small, weak surf through the end of August and into September.

The first few days of September look poor again, with onshore wind and weak, short-period swell. However, there’s a flicker of hope on Thursday the 3rd of September. We get a 6ft S swell with a 12-second period, combined energy of 952 (moderate), and a clean cross-offshore breeze in the afternoon. It’s marginal but worth a look. Friday the 4th is clean but blown out by strong offshore winds.

So, the best on offer is Sunday the 23rd for a fun, clean session, but the real standout is Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th for the experienced crew looking for power and size. It’s a classic case of patient waiting for the big stuff.

Rusty.
