The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s comin’ up for Figuera. It’s a slow start, so don’t get your hopes up for the next few days. There’s a big gap with no real surf worth paddlin’ out for from Sunday the 19th right through until Thursday the 24th – nearly a week of small, weak, and messy conditions. The first few days have some clean offshore wind, but the swell is tiny, around 3ft to 4ft from the east, and the period is short – only 7 to 8 seconds – so it’s weak and gutless. The combined energy is low, sitting between 125 and 203 (moderate wave energy at best). Honestly, not worth wettin’ a wetsuit for.
Things start to look a bit more interesting on Friday the 24th, but it’s messy. We get a sudden jump in size to 7ft from the SSW, with a period of 11 seconds and energy of 919 (strong wave energy), but the wind is onshore and choppy. That’s a lot of power with no shape – better suited for kite surfers than paddle surfers. The rain on Friday afternoon just adds to the misery.
Now, Saturday the 25th of July – that’s where the magic starts to show. Early morning glass-off with a light north wind, cross-off, and 6ft of swell from the south with a 10-second period. The energy is 592 (strong wave energy) and the surf is clean. This is a standout, no doubt. The water temperature is 72°F, which is about average for this time of year – just a touch cooler than normal, but nothing to worry about. Figuera is an exposed spot, so it picks up the south swell nicely, and the optimum direction is S, so this is a perfect match. For an intermediate, this is a beautiful session. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so expect a few others out, but it won’t be a circus.
The following week brings a few more windows. Monday the 27th of July is another cracker: early morning, clear skies, a light offshore wind from the NE, and 3ft of south swell with a very long period of 12 seconds. The energy is pumping at 625 (strong wave energy). That long period means the waves will have real shape and power, but at a point break like Figuera, it’ll be a dream. Tuesday the 28th also has clean offshore wind in the morning, but the swell drops to 2ft and the wind is a fresh 30 km/h, so it’s small and a bit tricky.
Fast forward to Saturday the 1st of August – a real standout pops up in the afternoon. Fresh offshore ENE wind at 35 km/h, 4ft of swell from the SSE, and a very long period of 14 seconds. The combined energy is a massive 1085 (very strong wave energy). That’s a proper groundswell, and with the wind cleaning it up, Figuera will be firing. It’s a bit far out, so treat it as a promising but less certain call, but the signs are good.
Then Monday the 3rd of August, early morning, gives us another gem: a gentle offshore NE wind, 4ft of south swell at 13 seconds, and energy of 553 (strong wave energy). Clean, glassy, and consistent. The water is still nice and warm for a winter dip.
So, to wrap it up: the best on offer is Saturday morning the 25th of July and Monday morning the 27th of July – both clean, well-shaped, and with good energy. The real standout, if the long-range forecast holds, is Saturday afternoon the 1st of August – that’s a big, clean, long-period swell that’ll have you grinning ear to ear. Figuera is a consistent spot, so even when it’s quiet, it doesn’t stay flat for long. Get out there when the wind’s right.
Rusty.
