The Lowdown
Alright, let’s take a look at what’s got legs here at Figuera.
The first several days are a bit of a write-off. From Monday the 17th of August through Saturday the 22nd, it’s a mix of strong offshore winds you can’t paddle into, and cross-onshore chop. The wave energy is weak to moderate. Nothing to get excited about. You’re looking at a wait until Sunday the 23rd before we see any real action.
Sunday morning the 23rd of August finally shows some life. A clean 5ft swell from the SSW, 10-second period, with the wind dropping to a light 3 mph offshore breeze from the ENE. Wave energy hits 496 (moderate). That afternoon gets even better: 5ft from the SSW, with a gentle 9 mph offshore breeze, and energy climbs to 723 (moderate). This is the first real window of clean, rideable surf.
Tuesday the 25th is a proper step up. The morning shows a 7ft S swell with a long 12-second period, light cross-off wind. The afternoon locks in at 7ft S swell, 11-second period, and a clean 12 mph offshore from the East. Energy is strong at 1230. This is excellent for experienced surfers. Not for beginners.
Monday the 31st of August is the standout. A 6ft S swell with a very long 16-second period. Energy is huge: 2066 (very strong). And the wind is glass – zero, calm. This is a powerful groundswell for experienced crew only. The long period should produce nice, lined-up waves here.
Tuesday the 1st of September brings a 10ft swell early – too big for the spot. The afternoon is better at 5ft S swell, 13-second period, with cross-off wind, still carrying strong energy at 1324.
Water temp is around 73°F, just a touch above average.
So the play is: wait out the first week. Hit Sunday the 23rd morning for clean surf. The best windows are Tuesday the 25th afternoon and that magic Monday the 31st – glassy, powerful, and clean.
