The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Figuera over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a tease. The best surf on offer is actually right at the start, on Wednesday the 15th of July. Wednesday morning, the swell is a solid 5 ft coming out of the SSE, with a 10-second period, delivering a moderate combined swell energy of 622. That’s some proper push. The wind is light offshore from the NE, just 9 mph, making for glassy, clean conditions. This is the standout session—expect very good surf. Water temp is sitting at 72°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so nothing weird going on there. The waves should be rippable for an intermediate surfer, just keep in mind that Figuera can get a crowd sometimes.
After that Wednesday morning high, things drop off fast. Wednesday afternoon is still rideable with a 5 ft swell but the wind picks up to 19 mph, and the quality takes a hit. Then from Thursday the 16th through to Tuesday the 22nd of July, we’re in a real dry spell. The swell drops below 3 ft most days, and even when there’s a few bits of energy, the wind is either too strong or cross-off, making for poor conditions. There’s a small pulse on Sunday the 19th with 4 ft, but the swell period is short at 7-8 seconds, so you’d be battling a weak, choppy sea. The combined energy readings are mostly in the low 100s or even below 100—just not worth paddling out.
We get a tiny flicker of hope on Tuesday the 21st afternoon and Wednesday the 22nd afternoon, with surfable waves and moderate offshore wind, but the swell is only 2-3 ft and the energy is weak (89 and 71). It’s more of a longboard cruise than a proper surf.
Now, looking further ahead, the end of the month shows some real promise, but it’s a long way out. On Monday the 27th of July, we’ve got a big pulse of swell coming in from the S at 8 ft, with a 9-second period and a combined energy reading of 1531—that’s strong. But the 8 ft size puts it firmly in expert-only territory for a beach break like this, and with rain around and cross-off winds, it’s marginal. Tuesday the 28th is similar, with a 8 ft S swell and a 12-second period, giving a massive 1566 energy reading. That long-period groundswell could set up nicely if it holds, but it’s a long-range forecast, so treat it as promising but not locked in. For a spot like Figuera, a long-period S swell can work, but watch for it being a bit too straight for the beach.
Wednesday the 29th of July looks the most user-friendly of that late surge, with 5 ft S swell, a 12-second period, and offshore winds from the ENE at 19 mph in the morning. The energy is still pumping at 747. That’s the one to circle on the calendar if you can wait—just don’t hold me to it yet.
So, bottom line: the window of quality is tight. Wednesday morning the 15th is your best bet, hands down. After that, you’re waiting over a week for the next real swell, and that one’s a bit of a gamble. Hang tight, the forecasts can always shift for the better.
Rusty.
