The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got the outlook for Figuera. Honestly, the next week and a half or so is pretty quiet – not much happening. The first real surf worth talking about doesn’t show up until Saturday the 25th of July, and that’s the standout. The run up to that is a long stretch of clean but small, weak waves that just aren’t doing it for a paddler. Let’s break it down.

From Thursday the 16th right through to the morning of Wednesday the 22nd, it’s a real flat spell. You’ve got clean conditions with offshore breezes, but the swell is tiny – under 3ft – and the combined energy is low, mostly under 200 (moderate at best). The swell is coming from the SE and E, with periods around 8 to 10 seconds. It’s surfable, but only just, and it’s not calling you out of bed. The water temp is a balmy 72°F, which is pretty much spot-on for this time of year.

Then on Wednesday the 22nd afternoon and Thursday the 23rd, the swell picks up a little but conditions are ordinary. The wind goes light, but the waves are still small and messy. The combined energy on Thursday afternoon hits 289 (moderate) from a short SSW swell, but it’s cross-shore wind with a slight chop. Not your day.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Friday the 24th of July morning is a real tease. Glassy conditions with a 3ft S swell and 9-second period, and the combined energy is 284 (moderate). The forecast says “expect good surf conditions,” and it’s looking clean. But the afternoon turns to chop. Still, that morning session is a solid, quiet option.

But the true standout? Saturday the 25th of July. That’s the one. The morning brings a clean 6ft S swell at 10 seconds, with a light cross-offshore breeze and combined energy of 597 (moderate-strong). It’s getting juicy. Then the afternoon fires up: 7ft S swell at a very long 13 seconds, with fresh offshore wind from the E. The combined energy jumps to 1592 (very strong). This is excellent surf for experienced surfers – it’s clean, powerful, and has proper groundswell lines. The only thing to note: with a long period like that, Figuera is a beach break, so it might wall up a bit. Still, this is the best on offer, and it’s a ripper.

Sunday the 26th is still big – 8ft S swell at 13 seconds in the morning, with combined energy at 1712 (very strong) – but the wind turns onshore from the WSW, making it lumpy. By the afternoon, it’s onshore and choppy. This is more for the kite crew than a paddle surfer.

Monday the 27th of July morning is a beauty though. Glassy, 4ft S swell at 11 seconds, with combined energy of 513 (moderate-strong). Clean and fun. The afternoon holds a clean 3ft S swell with offshore wind. Good follow-up.

After that, the swell drops back down through the rest of the week. Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th have small, clean surf but it’s weak. By Thursday the 30th and into Friday the 31st, the wind turns onshore and the swell is messy again. The last few days are a write-off.

So, bottom line: don’t bother until the 24th of July morning, but get ready for Saturday the 25th of July afternoon – that’s the real standout. Then Monday the 27th morning is a quieter, glassy bonus. The rest is a wait.

Rusty.
