The Lowdown
Alright, it’s been a bit of a flat spell here. The first real chance of a wave comes on Friday the 17th, but it’s pretty ordinary. We’ve got a 3ft swell from the SE, but it’s getting hammered by a 25 mph ENE wind, so don’t expect much. The water’s sitting at 72°F, which is just about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The whole first week is a write-off. Saturday the 18th through to Thursday the 24th is all onshore junk – mostly NE to ENE winds, with swell heights bouncing between 3ft and 7ft, but the wind is ruining it. The combined energy is weak to moderate, but it doesn’t matter because the conditions are poor. Not worth paddling out.
Then, finally, a glimmer. On Friday the 25th, the wind switches to a light offshore from the WSW, and we get a clean 3ft S swell with a long 11-second period. It’s a groundswell, so at Praia das Dunas (a beach break) it might be a bit straight, but it’s the best we’ve seen. The combined energy is moderate. Saturday the 26th drops off again, so don’t get your hopes up.
The real standout is Monday the 27th of July. Morning session is the pick – a clean 6ft S swell, 11-second period, with a light cross-offshore breeze. The combined energy jumps to a solid moderate-strong, and the rating says “expect very good surf conditions.” This is the best on offer. The afternoon goes a bit cross-shore, so get out early.
After that, it gets messy again. Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th have solid S swells with periods up to 14 seconds, but the wind is all over the place – onshore, cross-on, or too strong. The energy is high, but it’s not clean. Thursday the 30th has a chunky 8ft S swell, but that’s heavy for this beach, and the conditions are only marginal. Definitely for experienced surfers only.
The first week of August looks like a return to onshore slop with strong winds, so not much to get excited about.
Overall, keep your eyes on the morning of the 27th. That’s the one.
