The Lowdown
Alright, crew, Rusty here. Let’s break it down.
We’ve got a solid run of swell coming into Recreio. This spot is very consistent and exposed to the south, which is exactly what this forecast is feeding it. The water is sitting at 75°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a nice bonus.
Sunday the 23rd morning is where we kick things off. The swell is a clean 6ft from the SSW with a 10-second period, and the wind is glassy from the ENE at just 3 mph. That’s a dream start. The combined energy is moderate at 689, but the conditions are excellent. Sunday afternoon stays around 6ft, but a cross-shore wind kicks in, making it a bit messier.
Monday the 24th is a beast. We’re looking at 8ft from the S with a 13-second period in the morning, and 10ft in the afternoon. The combined energy jumps to 2073 and then 3037 – that’s strong to very strong. The wind is light, but the swell is too big for this break. This is strictly for experienced surfers only. Tuesday the 25th is similar, with 8ft and 8ft from the S, again too big for most.
Wednesday the 26th morning brings a drop to a more manageable 5ft from the S, but check this – a 16-second period. That’s a very long-period groundswell, packing a punch with moderate energy (1964). With light cross-offshore wind, it’s clean and excellent for experienced surfers who know how to handle a longer period.
Thursday the 27th morning has a 7ft S swell and clean cross-offshore wind, but it’s big. The afternoon improves with a 7ft S swell and a clean offshore breeze from the NE at 9 mph – excellent for those who can handle it.
Friday the 28th is the standout. Morning sees a 4ft S swell with a 12-second period and clean offshore wind from the N at 6 mph. The combined energy is moderate at 543, and conditions are very good. The wind stays favourable into the afternoon, with a 3ft S swell and cross-offshore breeze.
Saturday the 29th is fun. A 6ft E swell with an 8-second period in the morning, but the wind is cross-offshore. The period is short, so it won’t have the same grunt, but it’s still good. Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st are smaller, with 4ft E swells and glassy conditions – good for a cruisey session.
The second week starts quieter. Tuesday the 1st of September has a 4ft E swell with glassy conditions, but the wind turns onshore in the afternoon. Wednesday the 2nd gets messy with a 8ft S swell and cross-onshore wind – poor. Thursday the 3rd sees a 7ft SSW swell, but it’s still too big.
Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th are marginal, with onshore or cross-onshore winds and moderate swell. Sunday the 6th morning is a bright spot – a 6ft SE swell with offshore wind from the NE at 3 mph. Clean conditions. Monday the 7th morning holds a 5ft SE swell with offshore wind, but the afternoon goes cross-shore.
The best of the whole run is Friday the 28th morning at Recreio. Clean offshore wind, 4ft S swell, 12-second period, and moderate energy (543). It’s a dream window. For experienced surfers, Wednesday the 26th morning with the 5ft, 16-second groundswell and clean conditions is a serious contender.
Stay safe, watch the tides, and I’ll catch you on the next one.
