The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board, let's talk about what's cookin' at Recreio.
Alright, we’ve got a bit of a mixed bag ahead. The ocean is going to be active, but we need to pick our moments carefully. The water is sitting at a warm 73°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home.
The week kicks off on Monday, August 17th with a solid start. Recreio is seeing 5ft of east swell with a short period of 7 seconds, but with a clean cross-offshore breeze from the east, it’s looking like a good session. The combined energy is moderate at 462.
Tuesday morning, August 18th, is a real standout. You’ve got a 6ft east swell, period still short at 7 seconds, but the wind is a clean offshore from the north, just a light breeze, creating very good surf conditions. The energy is building, hitting 548. This is your best window for the first few days.
The surf drops off significantly after that, with a few days of smaller, weaker waves and onshore winds. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings offer some small, clean waves, but the energy is weak, with the combined energy below 100 on Thursday. The swell is small, around 3ft to 4ft.
Then things get interesting, but tricky. From Saturday, August 22nd afternoon, a new swell starts to fill in. By Sunday, August 23rd, we’ve got a 5ft south-southwest swell with a longer period of 9 seconds, and it’s glassy. The energy is moderate at 337 in the morning, building to 406 in the afternoon. This is a good, clean option.
But hold on. The real heavy stuff arrives Monday, August 24th and Tuesday, August 25th. The swell pumps up to 8ft to 8ft from the south, with a long period of 11 to 15 seconds. The combined energy is massive — 1448, 1111, and even a whopping 3064. This is serious, expert-level swell. For most of us, it’s going to be too big and powerful. The wind is light and favorable, but this wave is for the brave and skilled only. The long period (15 seconds) will make this swell bend and focus, so it’s a true groundswell.
The best of the best, however, comes on Wednesday, August 26th. Morning conditions are absolutely perfect: 6ft of south swell, a very long period of 13 seconds, and a glassy calm. The energy is strong at 1237. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The wind is glassy, the lines will be clean and powerful. This is the standout session of the whole forecast. The afternoon also looks good, with a 6ft south swell, 13-second period, and offshore wind from the north-northeast.
After this peak, the swell fades quickly. Thursday, August 27th, still has some decent 3ft waves with a 12-second period, but the energy drops. From Friday, August 28th onward, it’s back to small, weak surf for the rest of the forecast period, with combined energy dipping below 100 again. The last week is a write-off.
So, to sum it up: Tuesday morning, August 18th is your early-week winner for clean, fun waves. But the absolute crusher is Wednesday, August 26th, with glassy conditions and a strong, long-period groundswell. That’s the one to circle on the calendar.
