The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, mate, it’s a pretty flat and quiet stretch ahead. There’s no real punch in the forecast, and most days are looking more like a miscast than a session. The first proper chance to even think about paddling out isn’t until Monday the 17th of August, and even then it’s barely a ripple.

We kick off on Sunday the 16th with nothing doing – just poor conditions and cross-on breeze. Monday morning the 17th, we get a brief window of glass at Barra do Sai (Barrado-Sai). The water is sitting at 69°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a proper anomaly of 4° warmer, so you won’t need the thickest rubber.

That Monday morning, we’ve got a tiny 3ft swell out of the east, with an 8-second period, and the combined energy is weak at 134. It’s surfable but very ordinary. Glassy conditions are the only thing making it even worth a look. The crowds are “sometimes” here, so you might have company, but with waves this small it won’t be packed.

The next few days through to Friday the 22nd are mostly poor, with a few glassy or clean mornings (like Tuesday the 18th morning, Thursday the 20th morning) that give you tiny 2ft to 3ft waves – not really worth the paddle unless you’re desperate.

There’s a bit of a lift showing on Tuesday the 25th of August in the morning. The swell bumps up to 5ft out of the SSE with an 11-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 767 (moderate). The wind is light and cross-shore, and it’s labelled as marginal – not total junk, but not clean either. That’s likely the biggest wave of the whole outlook, but at 5ft it’s still only really for beginners up to intermediates. The period is long enough to have some shape, but the direction is SSE, and this break prefers south – so it’s not a perfect match.

After that, it tails off again. We get a few more glassy mornings on the 27th, 28th, 29th, and 31st of August, but all with tiny 2ft to 3ft east swell and short 8-second periods. Clean, sure, but barely breaking.

The standout – if you can call it that – is Tuesday morning the 25th of August. That’s where the energy is highest and the swell is biggest. It’s not going to blow anyone’s mind, but it’s the biggest of a very quiet run. Just keep in mind, with that SSE direction and a longer period (11 seconds), it might wrap a bit better at a reef or point than a beach break, but Barra do Sai is an exposed beach, so don’t expect perfection.

For the rest, you’re looking at long gaps of 4 to 5 days with nothing worth mentioning. The fit is weak overall.

Rusty.
