The Lowdown
Alright folks, let’s break down what Quilombo Reef has cooking for us.
The next couple of days are pretty lackluster. You’ve got some weak, short-period E swell on Thursday the 20th – only about 3ft with a combined energy of 78 – and while the morning is glassy, the whole thing is just too ordinary to bother with. Friday is even smaller, so don’t waste your time.
Now, get ready, because Saturday the 22nd morning lights up. That’s the real standout of the whole run. Swell jumps to a chunky 6ft from the SSE with a solid 10-second period, and the combined energy rockets up to 795 – that’s proper moderate energy, the kind that gets the pulse going. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the S at just 3 mph, keeping the surface clean. This is the one to lock in. It’s a reef break, so it’ll handle that size well, but at 6ft, it’s getting a bit big for total beginners. Remember, this spot can be inconsistent, so when it’s on, you get in the water.
Sunday the 23rd fades back to small and weak. But Monday the 24th morning brings another highlight – a long-period SE groundswell of 3ft with a 16-second period and combined energy of 575 (moderate). That long period means the waves will have real punch and shape, and with a 3 mph cross-offshore breeze, it’ll be clean. Long period swells can be a bit straight at beach breaks, but on a reef, this should be excellent.
Into the next week, Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th both have clean, glassy windows with offshore or glassy winds, though the swell is only 2ft to 3ft. The combined energy sits between 249 and 636, which is moderate, so worth a paddle if you want a mellow session.
Then on Thursday the 27th morning, there’s another interesting pulse – 5ft from the ENE with a short 7-second period, combined energy of 565. The wind is glassy, so it will look clean, but that short period windswell might not offer the best shape and could be a bit bumpy. Worth a look, but not the standout.
The rest of the run into the first week of September is mostly small, onshore, or cross-offshore windswell with low energy – nothing special. The best bet for a second session is Friday the 4th of September morning and afternoon, with a 3ft SE groundswell, 13-second period, combined energy around 276-293, and light cross-offshore winds. Clean and consistent.
Oh, and the water temperature on that first good Saturday is 68°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – a nice little bonus.
To sum it up: Saturday the 22nd morning is your absolute best call. Monday the 24th morning is the runner-up. Get in the water.
