The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, checking in on the surf for Praia da Macumba.
Look, to be straight with you, the next week and a bit is pretty flat and ordinary. The real action doesn’t fire up until we get into the second week of August, so you’ll want to be patient. There’s a big gap of nothing special until the 10th, with only tiny, weak surf that’s barely worth a mention. The water’s sitting at about 73°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least it’s not freezing while you wait.
The first real standout I can see is the morning of Monday, the 10th of August. We’ve got a south-southwest swell coming in at 4ft, with a nice 12-second period, and the combined energy is a solid moderate 519. The wind is a gentle cross-off from the east-northeast, keeping things clean. It’s not massive, but it’s the first decent pulse we’ve had, and it’ll be worth a paddle.
Now, the absolute highlight, the one you’ve been waiting for, is the morning of Friday, the 14th of August. This is a serious swell. We’re looking at a 8ft south groundswell with a 12-second period, and the combined energy is a strong 1565. The wind is dead calm, glassy, and it’s a south swell, which is right in the optimum direction for Praia da Macumba. This is excellent, powerful surf for experienced surfers. It’s too big for beginners, so leave this one to the crew who know what they’re doing. The following morning, Saturday the 15th, is almost a carbon copy – 8ft south swell, glassy, with a combined energy of 1958. Another incredible session for the experts.
After that, the morning of Sunday the 16th still has some good energy left, with a 6ft south swell and glassy conditions, so it’ll be a fun drop-off.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. The real deal kicks off on the morning of the 10th, but the absolute best, most powerful, and cleanest waves will be the mornings of the 14th and 15th of August. Be ready.
Rusty.
