The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s cooking.
Right now, the surf is pretty flat and messy. The first few days – Wednesday 19th into Thursday 20th – are nothing to write home about. We’ve got a small, weak 3ft swell from the east-northeast, with a short period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is very low (88). The water temperature is sitting at 66°F, which is bang on average for this time of year. There’s a little window Thursday morning with glassy winds that’ll clean things up, but the swell is just too small to get excited over.
Friday afternoon on the 21st sees a little shift: a 4ft southerly swell, period still short at 8 seconds, but with offshore winds and a clean surface. It’s surfable, but ordinary. The energy picks up moderately (225).
Then Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd are where we start to see some life. Saturday morning brings a 6ft southerly swell (9 seconds) with cross-offshore winds, and the energy jumps into the moderate range (615). The surf is clean and there’s proper shape. That’s a solid day for most surfers. Sunday keeps it going with a 4 to 5ft southerly swell, same period, still clean. Both days are good, and the consistency is there.
But the real standout – the one you want to circle on the calendar – is Monday 24th. That morning we’ve got a 8ft south-southeast swell, period stretching to a very long 13 seconds, and the combined energy is pumping hard (1770). The winds are glassy, and it’s clean. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The afternoon stays solid with a 7ft swell and even more energy (1923). This is the best of the whole run. Just know that at this size, it’s for the experienced crew only.
After that, the run starts to fade. Tuesday 25th still has some size with a 5ft south-southeast swell and long period (13 seconds), but the wind turns cross-on and the conditions get choppy. It’s marginal. Wednesday 26th morning offers a chance with glassy winds and a 3ft southerly swell (12 seconds), clean but small. That’s a fun little session for the patient surfer.
From Thursday 27th onward, things get rough. The wind is up, the swell direction shifts, and the quality drops. There are days with poor surf and funky winds. By the end of the month and into early September, we’re looking at a stretch of ordinary to poor conditions, with some rain and strong winds mixing in. A few small windows of clean, smaller surf around the 29th and 31st, but nothing to get excited about.
So, the takeaway: get after Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd for good, clean, fun waves. Monday 24th is the big one – long period groundswell, big energy, glassy winds – but only for the experienced. After that, it’s a waiting game.
