The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way.
Right off the bat, it’s a bit of a slow start for the next week or so. We’ve got a window of poor to marginal conditions with a lot of cross-shore and cross-onshore wind messing things up. The first real clear sign of life doesn’t show up until Monday, the 20th of July, and even then it’s small. But hold on, because the back half of the outlook is where the real story is.
The only standout in this whole 16-day run is a very specific window at Ponta Do Rapa (Portugal). This is a reef break that rarely breaks, so when it comes alive, it’s a special deal. The main event is on Monday, the 27th of July. The afternoon looks absolutely firing: a solid 8ft swell from the SSE, with a period of 13 seconds, giving it some real groundswell punch. The combined swell energy is massive at 1977, and the wind goes glassy. That’s a recipe for some serious, clean, powerful waves. This is for experienced surfers only—at that size, it’s not a beginner’s playground. The water is sitting at 61°F, which is a good 5° colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a thick wetsuit.
The action actually starts the day before, on Sunday the 26th of July, with a 8ft swell from the S, but the wind is cross-on and choppy, so it’s not worth the hassle. The 27th afternoon is the one to circle. The 28th of July also holds some promise with a 7ft SE groundswell (13-second period) and clean conditions with cross-offshore winds, though the energy is still high. After that, the swell drops back down and the wind turns iffy again.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. The second week delivers a true, rare, powerful reef-break session on the 27th and 28th. Don’t sleep on it.
Rusty.
