Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty.
First up, I’ve gotta be straight with you – Ponta do Silencio is pretty much flat-lining for the next two weeks. We’re looking at a real quiet stretch here. The first week in particular is a write-off. There’s a gap from now (July 4th) all the way through to the morning of Saturday, July 19th, with nothing worth paddling out for. That’s a solid 15-day dry spell, with the odd tiny blip of 1ft to 2ft, but they’re coming in with poor surf conditions and scores that tell you to stay on the beach.
The water temp is sitting at a cool 64°F right now, which is about 3°F colder than usual for this time of year. It’s a bit nippier than normal, so you’ll want the 4/3 if you’re keen, though there’s not much to be keen about.
The only real standout – and I use that term loosely – is shaping up for July 19th. Sunday morning and afternoon both show a slight bump in energy. We’re looking at 3ft of swell from the ENE, with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy hits 101 (moderate energy) in the morning and 123 (moderate energy) in the afternoon. The morning has clean conditions with a light offshore breeze from the WNW, and the afternoon turns glassy with zero wind. That’s the best you’re gonna get. It’s surfable, but it’s ordinary. Beginners might find the 3ft okay, but the short period means it’ll be a bit weak and crumbly.
Other than that, there’s a pulse on Tuesday, July 7th morning with a 6ft swell from the SSE, but that’s a 7-second period, straight onshore wind, and it gets a marginal call. That’s more of a messy, blown-out situation – not worth the drive.
So, if you’re hanging for a wave, pencil in the 19th. It’s not gonna be epic, but it’s the only window where the ocean remembers what a swell is. Keep an eye on it; near-term calls are way more solid, but this one is a long way off.
Rusty.
