The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s shaking for Ansteys over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag coming up, but the standout session is gonna be Saturday the 1st of August. That morning, the water is a warm 72°F, which is pretty much normal for this time of year – nothing weird there. The real story is the swell: a solid 8ft from the SSE with a period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy is pumping at 1991. That’s strong wave energy, and with glassy conditions, it’s going to be firing. It’s a bit of a beast though – over 8ft, so this is one for the experts only. The crowd factor is a “sometimes” here, so you might have a few others out, but for a wave that size, it’s worth the company.
Before that, we’ve got a long stretch of nothing much. The first real action is Sunday morning the 19th of July. It’s early, with a 6ft SSE swell and a 12-second period, and the combined energy is 950 – that’s moderate. The wind is glassy from the east at just 3 mph, so it’s gonna be clean. The water temp is 72°F, right on the money. It’s a good start, but the day fades by the afternoon as the wind shifts cross-shore. Monday and Tuesday the 20th and 21st are marginal at best, with the wind getting messy and the swell dropping off. Then from Wednesday the 22nd through to the end of the month, it’s a dead zone – poor conditions, onshore winds, and lumpy seas. Thursday the 23rd is a write-off with 22-25 mph winds, and Friday the 24th is a bit better in the afternoon with a clean cross-offshore breeze, but the swell is only 4ft.
Now, after the big Saturday, we roll into Sunday the 2nd of August. The morning has a 6ft ESE swell, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-offshore, so it’s clean but blown out. The energy is still moderate at 1089. Not a standout. Monday the 3rd of August morning is interesting – the wind is dead calm, glassy, and there’s a 7ft swell from the NE, but the period is only 7 seconds, so it’s a short-period windswell. The energy is 1118, so it’s got some punch, but for a beach break like Ansteys, that short period means it’ll be a bit crumbly and harder to get a clean ride. Definitely an expert-only day again due to the size.
Overall, the only real gem here is that Saturday the 1st of August morning. The rest of the window is either too small, too windy, or too messy. There’s a gap of about a week between the Sunday the 19th and the Saturday the 1st where the surf is mostly poor or marginal. If you’re a beginner, steer clear of the big days, and for the rest, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
