The Lowdown
Alright, let me tell you what’s coming down the line. To be straight with you, it’s a pretty frustrating stretch for the next couple of weeks. We’ve only got one spot in the game, Ansteys, and it’s not exactly firing. For the first few days, the wind and the wave quality are just not playing ball. We’re looking at a big blank run until we get a glimmer of something surfable.
We start off Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th with small, weak swell around 3ft from the east, but the wind is a mess – cross-onshore or cross, and gusty. The water is about average for this time of year. The combined wave energy is moderate at best (213), but the conditions are poor and lumpy. Not worth paddling out.
Thursday the 20th brings a jump in size with a 7ft southerly swell, but it’s short period (8 seconds) and the wind is fresh cross-onshore, making it lumpy and ugly. Combined energy hits 585, but it’s still poor quality. Not a good look.
Now, the first real chance we get is on Friday the 21st morning. We get a 4ft swell from the south with a very long period of 13 seconds. The wind turns cross-offshore from the northeast, keeping the surface clean. The combined energy is strong (622). This is the standout of the week. The only problem is Ansteys is inconsistent, and with that long period groundswell, it might break a bit straight at this beach setup. But if you’re an intermediate, this Friday morning is your best bet.
The next glimmer shows up on Sunday the 23rd. The swell builds to 8ft in the morning and 8ft in the afternoon from the south, with period stretching to 15 seconds – that’s very long period groundswell. The wind is light, so conditions are only fairly choppy. Combined energy is massive in the afternoon (3016). This is only for experts, as 8ft is too big for beginners. The long period also means it’ll be walled up at the beach, so if you know what you’re doing on a point or reef, you’d be better off elsewhere. But for the brave, it’s promising.
After that, the wind turns ugly again for most of the next week, with strong breezes and messy cross-chop. We do get a small window on Sunday the 30th afternoon. The swell drops to 4ft from the south-southeast with a glassy wind. The conditions finally look clean, and the score says it’s good. Combined energy is light (224), so it’s small, but the glassy surface makes it a sweet little session for a longboard or a funboard.
After that, we’re back into a run of poor surf with messy winds all the way into early September. The setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on the bigger, windier days.
Look, the forecast can change, so keep an eye on it. For now, Friday the 21st morning and Sunday the 30th afternoon are your best windows at Ansteys.
