Alright, let’s get into it. It’s Rusty here.
Alright, so we’re lookin’ at Ansteys for the next couple weeks. Honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag – there’s some potential, but you’ve gotta pick your moments. The first real action worth paddlin’ out for is actually not until the afternoon of Tuesday the 7th of July. We’ve got a bit of swell from the NE at 4 feet, period around 7 seconds – that’s a short-period windswell, nothing too meaty. The wind’s comin’ from the NNE at 9 mph, which is cross-offshore, and the water’s lookin’ clean. The combined energy’s moderate at 256. Not a classic, but it’s a start.
Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th are pretty flat, with tiny waves and poor conditions – best to skip those. Things start lookin’ up from Thursday afternoon the 9th though, when a proper S swell kicks in at 4 feet with a 14-second period – that’s long-period groundswell, so it’ll have some punch and shape. The problem is the wind is S at 9 mph, cross-onshore, makin’ things a bit choppy. The combined energy jumps to 514, so there’s some juice there, but the quality’s marginal.
Friday the 10th of July sees that S swell building: 6 feet in the morning with a 16-second period – very long period, and strong energy at 1807. By the afternoon, it’s 7 feet at 15 seconds with energy at 2025 – that’s serious swell, but the wind is onshore at 9 mph from the SSE, so it’s gonna be lumpy. This is proper expert territory, and with that cross-onshore wind, it’s not gonna be clean. For a kite surfer, this setup might look interesting, but for a regular paddle surfer, it’s a fight.
Saturday the 11th still has decent S swell around 5 feet at 13 seconds and 773 energy in the morning, but the wind is light cross-onshore from the S at 3 mph – that’s much cleaner, but still a bit onshore. Crowds are possible at Ansteys sometimes. The afternoon drops off.
Then we hit a bit of a lull from Sunday the 12th through to the 14th – dropping wave heights, onshore or cross-shore winds, and poor conditions. Don’t bother.
Now, here’s the standout. The real gem in this whole forecast is Wednesday morning the 15th of July. It’s still a week and a bit away, so it’s promising but less certain, but look at this: glassy conditions – wind from the NE at 3 mph, glassy, which is a huge positive. The swell is a clean 4 feet from the S, with a period of 9 seconds – that’s moderate period, decent shape. Combined energy is 500, so moderate wave energy. Expectations are very good surf conditions. This is the one to pencil in. Get out there early.
After that, the 16th through to the 22nd of July gets messy again. Strong onshore winds, lumpy conditions, poor surf quality from the 16th to the 20th. There’s a spike in size on the 21st and 22nd – 7 feet to 7 feet – but the wind is cross from the NE on the 21st with a short period around 7-8 seconds, so weak, junky waves at 994 energy. On the 22nd, a strong SSW wind at 22 mph just ruins it completely. That’s blown out.
So overall, the standout is Wednesday the 15th morning for clean, fun waves. The S swell on the 10th is big but onshore, only for experts. Most other days are gonna be a write-off. Keep an eye on that Wednesday though.
Rusty.
