The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s look at what’s on the cards for Ansteys over the next couple of weeks.
The outlook starts Thursday the 20th of August, and honestly, it’s a pretty average run for a while. The first few days are messy with cross-onshore winds and lumpy, choppy conditions. Swell energy is moderate, around 531 to 691 (combined energy), but the wind is working against it. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
Friday the 21st of August sees a bit of a lift in the morning with a 4ft S swell, period 13 seconds, and a gentle cross-shore breeze, but the surf is still marginal with slight cross-chop. The energy drops to 542. Afternoon is smaller and weaker.
From Saturday the 22nd through to Monday the 24th, it’s mostly poor to marginal with small swells, messy winds, and the odd spot of clean but small surf. Nothing to get excited about.
Tuesday the 25th of August has a jump in period to 18 seconds in the afternoon with a 3ft S swell, but the wind is cross-onshore and it’s only moderate energy (636). The long period means the waves will be a bit more powerful but the sets will be spaced out.
Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th of August both have solid energy in the moderate to strong range (742–1084) but the wind is strong cross-shore and the swell is short period, so it’s messy and lumpy. The swell picks up to 7ft on Thursday afternoon but with a short period, it’s more of a chop than a clean wave.
The best chance in the whole period comes on Friday the 28th of August. Morning sees a 6ft ENE swell, 8 second period, with a gentle cross-shore breeze and clean conditions. The energy is 720 – moderate. The swell direction is a bit off the optimum E, but the wind is light and the surf is rideable. Afternoon builds to 8ft, but the wind picks up to a moderate breeze, so the morning is the pick.
Saturday the 29th of August morning has a small 3ft SSE swell with a long 14 second period and moderate cross-shore wind – marginal but could offer a few clean ones if you time it right. The afternoon gets messy with strong cross-onshore winds.
From Sunday the 30th of August onward, the surf drops off significantly. There are a few marginal days (31st August morning has a 4ft S swell, 11 seconds, light cross-onshore – worth a look for the patient surfer) but nothing consistent. The last week of the forecast into early September is mostly poor with small swells, bumpy winds, and low energy. The 4th of September morning shows a 6ft ENE swell, short period, but with gentle cross-shore wind – maybe a late chance but it’s marginal.
Overall, the standout is Friday the 28th of August morning at Ansteys – 6ft E/ENE swell, light cross-shore breeze, clean conditions, and moderate energy. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best one in the run. The rest of the period is mostly average to poor, with a few small windows of opportunity for the keen.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the forecasts.
Rusty.
