The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Ansteys. This is a spot that’s inconsistent, so you gotta be patient. The water’s about average for this time of year, no big changes.
The first real chance to get wet is Saturday morning, 18 July. It’s small, just 3 feet of east swell, but it’s clean with a light NNE breeze coming cross-off. The wave energy is 225, which is modest, and the period is a bit short at 10 seconds, so it’s not packing a punch, but it’s a nice, clean start.
Then we hit a dry spell. The next few days are pretty average—the wind turns onshore or cross, and the swell bumps up to around 6 feet to 6 feet, but it’s messy. The energy gets up to 1071 on Monday, 20 July, but the wind is killing it with a gentle cross-onshore chop. Not worth paddling out.
From Tuesday, 21 July, all the way through to Saturday, 1 August, it’s a long stretch of poor surf. The swell drops, the wind is all over, and the scores are zero. There’s a week or more of nothing to recommend. The energy drops as low as 45 on Friday, 24 July, which is just weak.
The standout window is Wednesday morning, 29 July. That’s the one. Ansteys is looking at 7 feet of east swell, with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind is NNE at 15 km/h, clean cross-off. The combined energy is 1081, which is moderate, but the call is “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” That’s the real deal. It’s a bit of a wedge, so not for beginners, but if you’ve got the skills, that morning is the pick. The afternoon turns ugly with the wind swinging onshore, so it’s a morning-only session.
After that, Thursday, 30 July, has some 6-foot swell from ENE with a light air and onshore wind, but it’s messy. Then it fades out again.
So, overall: the best wave is on Wednesday morning, 29 July, at Ansteys. It’s a solid 7-foot east swell with clean cross-off wind. The rest of the period is mostly a write-off, with a long gap of poor conditions. Stick to that Wednesday morning if you can.
