The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer at Ansteys over the next couple of weeks.
First up, the water temperature is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing out of the ordinary there.
The outlook starts on Wednesday the 15th of July, but to be honest, it’s a bit of a slow burner. The first couple of days are more about watching than waxing up. Wednesday morning has a 6ft swell from the east with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate at 716, but that cross-on wind from the south is making things messy. Not your day. Wednesday afternoon is much the same story.
Thursday the 16th is where we start to see a glimmer. Thursday morning is the standout early on. The swell drops to a clean 5ft from the east, period still 10 seconds, and the wind goes glassy. That’s pure gold. The combined energy is still a moderate 537, but with that offshore wind, it’ll be smooth and lined up. Perfect for an intermediate. Keep in mind, Ansteys is inconsistent, so you need to pick your windows. Also, crowds are possible here, so get there early.
The energy drops off through Friday and into the weekend with smaller swells and cross-onshore winds making things choppy. Saturday the 18th morning has a small 3ft swell from the east, but the wind is clean and cross-offshore, so it’ll be rideable for a longboard or a funboard.
Then we get a nice little pulse on Sunday the 19th. Sunday morning sees a 6ft swell from the south, period 12 seconds, and combined energy is a solid 938 (moderate to strong). The wind is light and cross-offshore, so it’ll be clean. That’s another good window, but be aware the swell direction is shifting south, which isn’t the optimum east for this spot.
The middle of the week gets a bit wonky. Tuesday the 21st is small and clean, but not much push. Then Wednesday the 22nd afternoon has a big spike in energy: 6ft from the south, but with a very long period of 17 seconds. Combined energy is a strong 1742. That’s a groundswell, and at a beach break like Ansteys, a period that long can make the waves wall up and break too straight. It’s from the south, not the east, so the shape might be tricky. Still, it’s worth a look if you’re experienced.
Thursday the 23rd is a write-off. Strong south-southwest winds at 28 mph will ruin any chance of a clean wave. The same goes for the next few days; small, messy, or blown out.
There is a gap of several days with no real recommendations until the very end of the period. The best bet in the second week is Monday the 27th of July afternoon. The wind goes glassy, the swell is 5ft from the south at 11 seconds, and the combined energy is a moderate 667. That’s clean, but again, it’s a south swell, not the ideal east. Tuesday the 28th has a 7ft south swell, but the cross wind will chop it up.
The absolute standout of the whole 16-day run is Thursday morning the 16th of July. Glassy conditions, 5ft east swell, and a moderate 537 energy. That’s the one to mark on the calendar.
Rusty.
