The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty again. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks in feet and miles per hour.
First real surf hits Ansteys on Tuesday morning, July 14th. A solid 7ft ESE swell, moderate energy (778), and a light cross-off breeze from the north-northeast at 9 mph. Clean conditions, water temp about normal for this time of year. The period’s short at 9 seconds, but it’s rideable and fun. This is a standout session.
Tuesday afternoon goes onshore and messy, so don’t bother.
Wednesday the 15th is the pick of the week. Morning glass, 7ft from the east, 10-second period, and clean as it gets. Energy is a bit higher (811). That’s a proper morning for an intermediate.
Thursday the 16th morning is still glassy, with 5ft east swell, clean and fun. Then the swell fades fast. The weekend of the 17th and 18th is small and ordinary, with weak energy and cross-shore winds. Not worth the paddle.
Then Sunday the 19th throws a curveball. A 5ft south groundswell, 12-second period, clean cross-off wind, and decent energy (728). That’s a nice change for points and reefs. Monday the 20th goes huge – 12ft from the south, energy up to 2818, and cross-on wind. That’s expert-only, big and heavy.
Through the 21st to the 24th, swell stays around 4ft to 7ft, mostly from the south and southeast, with light cross or cross-off winds. The 22nd morning has a 6ft SE swell with a very long 13-second period, clean cross-off, and strong energy (987) – another standout for points and reefs.
The 25th to the 29th is mostly small and choppy. The 27th morning is glassy but only 4ft from the NE with a 5-second period – weak and short. Not much to write home about.
Best windows: Wednesday the 15th morning, Sunday the 19th, and the 22nd morning for the longer period groundswell. Monday the 20th for the big wave crew only.
Rusty.
