The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on tap for the next couple of weeks.

Overall, we’re looking at a quiet start with a proper pulse building by the weekend. The real standout is Sunday morning – that’s the one to circle on the calendar. For the rest of the run, we’ll have to pick our moments.

The first surfable window is Friday morning, but it’s nothing to write home about. Ansteys will be seeing a small 4ft easterly swell with a 10-second period, and the wind is a light cross-on from the SSE at 5 km/h. The combined energy is weak (281), and the conditions are marginal. It’s a bit of a limp start.

Friday afternoon is even quieter, with a slight drop in size and a choppy cross-on breeze. Not worth the paddle.

Saturday morning cleans up a bit. The wind swings around to a light NNE cross-off at 15 km/h, making for clean conditions on a small 3ft east swell. Combined energy is still weak (225). It’s a fun little session for a longboard or a foamie, but nothing exciting.

Now, Sunday morning (19 July) is the standout. The swell jumps to 6ft from the SSE, with a solid 14-second period – that’s proper groundswell. Combined energy is strong (1164). The wind is glassy, coming from the SE at just 5 km/h. This is excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers. The water temperature is 71°, which is about average for the time of year. The swell direction lines up nicely with the optimum E direction for Ansteys, and the long period will give it shape and power. It’s a bit big for beginners, but for anyone with a bit of experience, this is the session to be in.

Sunday afternoon holds the same size and a similar period, but the wind switches to a light onshore, so the morning is the clear winner.

Monday morning (20 July) is still very good. The swell remains 6ft from the SE, period 12 seconds, and the wind is glassy calm. Combined energy is strong (897). Expect very good surf conditions. It’s a solid follow-up to Sunday, but the wind is likely to get a bit cross by afternoon.

From Tuesday (21 July) through the rest of the week, things get messy. Strong NE winds, choppy conditions, and dropping swell sizes. It’s a real write-off from Tuesday morning through to the end of the month. The swell drops to 1ft by Friday (24 July), and the wind goes from fresh to near-gale strengths. The combined energy is weak (64 and below). This is a kite surfer’s weather, not a paddle surfer’s.

There’s a bit of a pulse again on Sunday (26 July) with a 4ft to 5ft S swell and a 14-second period, but the wind is cross-on, so it’s marginal. Combined energy is moderate (614 to 699). Not a standout, but if you’re desperate, it’s something.

The end of the month (30 July) brings a 6ft NE swell with a clean cross-off wind, but the period is short (8 seconds), and the combined energy is moderate (577). It’s a tidied-up option, but not a classic.

Honestly, the best on offer is that Sunday morning (19 July) at Ansteys – glassy, strong groundswell, and the right direction. If you can only get out once, make it then.

Rusty.
