The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for us.
Right off the bat, this isn't a week of non-stop pumping surf. There's a real mixed bag coming our way, with plenty of days where you'd be better off doing something else. But there are a couple of windows of opportunity if you pick your timing right.
We’re kicking off on Thursday the 16th of July with a bit of a tease. Ansteys is looking at a 5.2ft easterly swell with a very long 10-second period, and the combined energy is moderate (562). Thursday morning is the real standout: the wind is glassy. That means clean, lined-up waves for the intermediate crew, but given it’s Ansteys, it can be inconsistent, so don't expect a set every minute. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
Friday the 17th drops off a bit, with smaller 3.9ft easterly swell and a light cross-onshore breeze. It's surfable but not what we had Thursday morning. Saturday the 18th gets interesting again in the afternoon – a 2.9ft southerly swell with a very long 13-second period. That’s a groundswell, and combined with a light cross-offshore breeze, it’ll be clean. The energy picks up to 475 (moderate), but the break is inconsistent, so you might have to wait.
Sunday the 19th is a write-off – moderate cross-onshore winds and messy surf. Monday the 20th is similar, with a fresh onshore breeze making things lumpy.
Now, Tuesday the 21st of July is a hidden gem. The morning sees a glassy 2.9ft southerly swell, moderate energy (365), and a 11-second period. It’s going to be clean as a whistle, but tiny. Worth a paddle for the solo session if you’ve got a log.
Wednesday the 22nd morning is glassy again with a tiny 1.6ft south swell, but the period is a massive 18 seconds. The energy is still moderate at 234. That's a very long period groundswell, which can make beach breaks a bit straight, but for a point break or reef, that’s pure quality.
The rest of the week into the end of July is pretty ordinary. Strong winds, small chop, and poor conditions dominate. There’s a glimmer on Saturday the 25th morning with a glassy 2.9ft southerly swell again, but by afternoon the wind picks up and chops it out.
For the absolute best of the bunch, your standout is Thursday the 16th of July morning at Ansteys. That 5.2ft easterly swell with glassy conditions will be the most size and the best quality you'll see. After that, the Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd mornings are your quiet, clean windows for a smaller board or a longboard.
