The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Ansteys over the next couple of weeks.

To be straight with you, it’s a long, frustrating wait for decent waves. For the first several days, from Saturday the 22nd through most of the following week, the wind is just all wrong – mostly cross or cross-onshore – and the surf quality is poor. There’s a small, weak 2ft south swell rolling in on Saturday morning (22nd), but with a moderate cross-shore wind it’s not worth paddling out. The energy is a lowly 97 (weak), and the water’s sitting at 71°, which is about normal for the time of year. A couple of days in the middle of the week see a bit more size, but the wind stays messy, so you’re not missing much.

Now, mark your calendar for Wednesday the 26th. That’s where the magic is hiding. Wednesday morning, the wind goes glassy, absolutely dead calm. We’ve got a 4ft south swell pumping in with a very long period of 18 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell with serious energy (1061). This is the standout in the whole 16-day window – clean, lined-up swell. Just a heads-up, though: that long period can make beach breaks a bit straight, but on the right bank it’ll be pure gold. The afternoon sees the swell jump to 7ft with even more energy (2685), but the wind swings onshore, so hit it early while it’s glassy.

After that, the rest of the run is mostly blown out. Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th have solid sizes (5ft to 8ft) but that fresh to strong cross-shore wind from the NE ruins everything – messy lumpy chop. The weekend of the 30th and 31st is more of the same: too much wind and poor quality. There’s a glimmer on Tuesday the 1st of September with a light breeze and a small 3ft east swell, but it’s marginal. The real kicker might be Saturday the 6th of September: a clean 4ft south-southeast swell with a cross-offshore breeze, but by then we’re well into the second week, so take that one with a grain of salt.

Overall, the absolute best bet is Wednesday the 26th, morning session. Get out there for that glassy, long-period groundswell. The rest is mostly a write-off.

Rusty.
