Righteo, Rusty here, giving you the full run-down for Ansteys. We’ve got a decent little window of surf on the way, but you’ve gotta pick your moments.
The first proper call is this Saturday, July 4th. We’re looking at some serious size rolling in, with an 8ft SSE swell, and the period is a solid 12 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy is pumping at 2257 (moderate wave energy), so there’s plenty of grunt in the water. The wind is glassy from the NE in the morning, making for some absolutely clean, lined-up sets. This is expert territory though – that size is not for the faint-hearted. The water temp is 71°, which is bang on average for this time of year. Saturday afternoon still has good size at 7ft, but the wind swings ENE and goes cross-on, so the surface will get a bit of texture on it.
Sunday the 5th still has a healthy 5ft SSE swell, again with that nice 12-second period (741 energy). The morning has a light NNE cross-off breeze, so it’ll be clean and look fantastic. This is a solid intermediate option.
After that, the energy drops away. Monday the 6th is pretty small at under 3ft, and the period drops to 10 seconds. There’s a decent run of small, clean-ish surf through Monday afternoon and Tuesday with that offshore flow, but we’re talking small wave faces. The swell direction starts to clock around to the NE.
From Wednesday the 8th through to Thursday the 9th, the wind goes onshore from the SSW and gets fresh, making for choppy, lumpy conditions. The swell is small and weak (147 to 299 energy). Not worth paddling out.
Thursday afternoon the 9th sees a new, longer-period S swell arrive at 5ft with a 15-second period (1156 energy), which is very long. That’s a lot of power, but it’s coming with a cross-on wind. This setup is much better suited for a point break or a reef – at a beach break like Ansteys, that long period will make it break straight and fast. Still, the energy is there.
Friday the 10th has more of that S swell, pushing 6ft with a 16-second period (1913 energy), but the wind is howling from the S at 19 mph. That’s a messy, windy mess. Probably more of a kitesurfing show than a surfing one.
The weekend of the 11th and 12th has solid S swell hanging around (6ft, 14-second period, 1475 energy on Saturday morning), but the wind is a problem – onshore or strong. Sunday the 12th the wind goes strong offshore from the NE, but it’s 19 mph, so it’ll be howling. The swell is dropping fast.
The second week, from Monday the 13th onward, is a real mixed bag. The swell goes east and becomes very short period (6-8 seconds). You’ll get days with clean offshore wind but tiny, weak waves (136-297 energy). The standout in this week is probably the morning of Wednesday the 15th, with a 7ft ENE swell (802 energy) and light cross-shore wind. It’ll be a bit lumpy, but the size is there for a go. And then Thursday the 16th morning has another 7ft ENE pulse (1109 energy), but the wind is strong cross-shore. Overall, it’s inconsistent and you’ll be scratching around.
If you want the best, lock in Saturday morning July 4th for the biggest, cleanest surf, or Thursday afternoon July 9th for the grunty, long-period S swell if you don’t mind a bit of wind on it.
Rusty.
