Alright, Rusty here with the imperial version.
We’re looking at a pretty quiet start for the next couple of weeks. The opening days won’t give you much to get excited about, so no need to rush down there on July 6. That said, there’s a glimmer of hope further out, but you’ll need a bit of patience.
The first session worth paddling into is Monday, July 6, morning at Caioba. We’re looking at clean, glassy 2ft waves out of the SE with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is weak at just 134, so it’s small and a little weak but the cross-off wind from the NNW at 3 mph should keep the faces tidy. Very small, not a stand-out, but it’s surfable if you’re desperate for a fix.
The real standout finally shows up on Sunday, July 19, morning. This is the one to circle on the calendar. Caioba picks up a clean 4ft swell from the east with short period at 8 seconds, which means punchy little waves, not a drawn-out groundswell. The combined energy hits 297, showing moderate wave energy. The winds are zero – glassy calm. That means silky smooth conditions, no chop. This is the best session of the whole two weeks. The swell direction from the east matches the optimum direction from the south reasonably enough for this exposed spot.
The following morning, Monday, July 20, isn’t far behind. You get 3ft from the east, period 10 seconds, glassy with calm winds again. The energy is strong at 373. It’s clean, consistent, and well worth a session before work.
There are a few other windows: July 7 Tuesday afternoon shows glassy 3ft from the SE and July 11 Saturday morning is glassy at 3ft from the ESE with a long period of 13 seconds, which brings in good shape but might break a bit straight on the beach. Still clean but not the stand-out.
For the rest of the time, the wind is often cross-on or onshore, and the swell is small, under 3ft mostly. The water temperature is about average for the time of year – nothing weird going on there. Beginners should note that when the swell pushes above 5ft (like late July 13 afternoon at 7ft), that’s expert territory, and with a moderate cross-onshore breeze, it’ll be choppy and messy. Not recommended for paddlers at all.
In short: wait for July 19 and 20 mornings. Those are your best shots. Everything before that is small, clean, but barely worth a wet suit.
Rusty.
