The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there are some windows of clean fun if you pick your moments.
The run starts with a bit of a slow period, but we get a little pulse on Friday morning, 17 July, at Barra Velha (a beach and point setup). The water’s sitting at 64°, which is about 1.4° cooler than average for this time of year – nothing too wild, just a touch on the fresh side. The early session is the pick: clean, glassy conditions, with a 3.6 ft easterly swell. The energy is moderate (207), and while the period is a short 8 seconds, it’ll be fun for a beginner-plus surfer on a small board. The wind is glassy, so it’ll be smooth. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
The rest of Friday and into Saturday, the wind swings cross-on and the quality drops. Saturday morning, 18 July, again has glassy conditions with a similar 3.9 ft easterly swell, but it’s described as ordinary – surfable but nothing to write home about. That pattern hangs around through Sunday morning, 19 July, with another 3.9 ft ENE swell and glassy wind, but it’s ordinary.
Monday morning, 20 July, is the real standout of the first week. It’s glassy again, with a 3.9 ft ENE swell and moderate energy (200). The waves will be clean and lined up, especially on the point. This is the best window in the first week – get out there. The afternoon winds wreck it, but the morning is gold.
The middle of the week (21-23 July) is small and messy. Swell drops to 2.3-2.6 ft, with onshore or cross-off winds. There’s a brief window on Wednesday morning, 22 July, with light rain and glassy conditions, but the swell is tiny (2.6 ft) and ordinary. Thursday afternoon, 23 July, cleans up a bit with a cross-off wind, but again, it’s only 2.6 ft.
The weekend of 25-26 July is flat and weak. Swell bottoms out at 2.0 ft, and the energy drops to 95-97 – weak. Not worth paddling out.
Now, things get interesting again on Sunday, 26 July, when a new long-period SE swell shows up (14 seconds), but it’s accompanied by poor winds and cross-on conditions. The energy jumps to 193, but the waves are messy. Monday, 27 July, sees a bigger pulse of 4.3 ft ESE swell, but the wind is onshore, and the energy is strong (368), but it’s not clean. This one’s more for the experts if you’re brave, but the wind is a problem.
The real standout of the entire forecast comes on Wednesday morning, 29 July. The swell is 3.9 ft from the ENE, with a clean cross-off wind from the south (9 mph). The energy is moderate (201), and the conditions are clean. This is the best day of the whole run – glassy, lined up, and fun for intermediate surfers. Get on it.
The end of the run into early August fades out again. Small swell, weak energy, and poor winds. The final morning of 1 August has a 1.6 ft SE swell with clean offshore wind, but it’s tiny.
Overall, the standout mornings are Monday 20 July and Wednesday 29 July. The rest is mostly small, ordinary, or wind-affected. Make the most of the clean windows.
