Alright, Rusty here again. Let's break down what’s happening at Barra Velha in feet and Fahrenheit.
The next couple of weeks start off pretty weak, but there’s some serious firepower in the second week if you can wait. The first few days are small and forgettable, but we’ve got a real chance at some clean glassy sessions further out. One thing to note: the water is running a bit colder than what’s normal for this time of year.
Your spot is Barra Velha (beach and point). The first surfable waves show up on Thursday morning, July 2nd. It’s small, around 2ft from the east, with weak wave energy (71). The wind is glassy, though, so it’s clean if you’re just getting wet.
Friday (3rd) sees a bump to about 4ft, but the wind turns cross-onshore from the SE, making it a mess. Skip it. The real standout early on is Saturday morning, July 4th. Glassy conditions, a clean 3ft SE swell with a 12-second period, and wave energy at 274. Saturday afternoon is even better: glassy, 3ft, 13-second SE swell with 308 energy. Sunday (5th) keeps the glassy conditions with 3ft, 11-second SE swell. That’s a fun little weekend on the longboard. Just be aware, crowds are sometimes a thing here.
The following week (6th to 12th) is mostly small – 1ft to 3ft – with messy winds. Wednesday morning (8th) gives you a clean, offshore 3ft wave, but it’s still small.
The main event starts on Monday morning, July 13th. A moderate offshore breeze from the west with a 3ft ESE swell (223 energy). Clean. But the real standout is Tuesday morning, July 14th. That’s the day. Offshore wind from the WSW, a clean 5ft SE groundswell with an 11-second period and very strong wave energy (595). That’s proper surf for experienced surfers. Wednesday (15th) is also excellent: 5ft, 12-second ESE swell, glassy, with 703 energy.
The absolute best of the whole forecast is Friday morning, July 17th. You’ve got a glassy, 6ft SE swell with a 12-second period and massive energy at 1542. That’s a lot of power, clean face, and no wind. Over 5ft makes it the domain of more confident surfers. Beginners, give this one some respect.
So there you go: a slow start, a clean little weekend on the 4th and 5th, then a solid run of quality, offshore surf from the 14th to the 17th. The 17th is the one to aim for.
Rusty.
