The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks at Barra Velha.
The overall pattern is a bit of a slow burn. We’ve got a few days of small, glassy waves on offer, but nothing that’s going to blow your mind until we get into the second week. The water is sitting at 63°, which is a touch colder than usual for this time of year, so don’t forget the rubber.
The real standout window kicks off on the morning of the 27th of July. The swell builds to a solid 6ft from the East, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is a solid 413, which is a nice step up in power. The wind is light and offshore from the NW, making for clean, glassy conditions. This is the pick of the forecast for experienced surfers, but at 6ft, it’s getting a bit big for beginners. The morning session is where it’s at.
Before that, the mornings are providing the best opportunities. The morning of the 14th of July has a clean 4ft swell from the SE with a 10-second period and glassy conditions. The 15th and 18th also offer similar morning glass with 4ft and 4ft swells, respectively.
The 29th of July morning is a curious one. The swell is a tiny 2ft, but it’s a long-period groundswell from the SSE at 14 seconds. The energy reading is a deceptive 416, which tells you there’s a lot of push for a small wave. This is a point break or reef wave all day.
The afternoons fall apart with cross-onshore winds almost every day, so if you’re surfing, you’re getting up early.
For the rest of the first week, there are gaps of poor surf in the afternoons, but the glassy mornings keep the hope alive. The weekend of the 26th-27th is the go.
Rusty out.
