The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for the coming stretch at Praia de Ubatuba. It’s a pretty slow start, and honestly, the first few days are a bit of a write-off for any decent paddle. The swell is small and messy, and the winds are all over the place. We’re looking at a gap of no real surf action from Thursday, the 20th of August, all the way through to Sunday, the 23rd. The waves are tiny, and the wind is mostly cross or onshore, making for poor conditions.
Finally, things start to look up on Monday, the 24th of August. The morning is still a bit marginal with a cross-on breeze, but the afternoon is where it’s at. We get a glassy, clean surface with a 3ft swell from the southeast. The period is a very long 16 seconds, which is proper groundswell energy – you’ll feel the power in the water, with combined swell energy sitting at 499 (moderate). That long period will make the waves a bit more lined up, but on a beach break like this, it might be a little straight. Even so, this is the standout session of the whole run. The water is about average for this time of year, so no wetsuit worries.
Following that, Tuesday the 25th is a drop-off, with smaller surf and cross-onshore winds again. But then Wednesday the 26th offers another solid morning. It’s glassy, 2ft of that same long-period 16-second southeast swell, with combined energy still at 253 (moderate). The waves will be clean and fun for a smaller board. Thursday the 27th morning is also a good shout with glassy conditions and 2ft swell from the southeast at 14 seconds.
The rest of the outlook into the second week is a bit of a mixed bag. We get some glassy mornings on the 28th and 29th of August, but the swell is smaller and shorter-period. The 30th of August has a clean morning with offshore winds and 2ft easterly swell, but it’s nothing to write home about. After that, from the 31st of August into early September, the wind turns nasty from the south and southeast, bringing in a lot of chop and rain, and the swell gets bigger but blown out. The 4th of September has a 6ft swell from the east-northeast, but with strong onshore wind, it’s a mess. That setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddling.
So, for the best wave, make sure you’re in the water on Monday afternoon, the 24th of August. That’s the one.
Rusty.
