The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gonna be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat for the North Shore. We’re talking about a real dry spell, so don’t go getting your hopes up for any heavy sessions.
The only spot on the radar worth talking about is Pipeline, and even then, it’s a tease. The water temp is sitting right around 79°, which is dead average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The week starts off on Tuesday, July 14th, with a bit of swell showing. We’re looking at a weak 3 ft SSW groundswell, with a long 14-second period, pushing some moderate energy (612). The wind is a cross-off from the ENE at 12 mph, which will keep the surface clean. But honestly, the overall wave comment calls it marginal, and the size is tiny. It’s really just a small, clean little wave for a longboard or a foiler. Wednesday and Thursday are more of the same story – small, clean, but barely breaking. By Friday the 17th, the energy drops right off, and we’re into “poor surf conditions” with combined swell energy all the way down to 247 by Saturday. This flat spell is set to last for days.
There is a glimmer of hope way out there. Around Wednesday, July 22nd, we see a bit of a pulse. A 2 ft SSW swell with a very long 24-second period shows up, and the energy jumps back to moderate (314). That long period means the waves will have some real push for their size, but at Pipeline, a reef break, that super long period can sometimes make it a little too straight. Still, it’s clean. Then into Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th, the swell builds slightly to 2 ft-3 ft from the SSW, with energy climbing back up to 493. The wind stays a steady cross-off from the ENE. This is probably the best shot of the whole outlook – a small, clean, long-period groundswell. It’s still not going to be big, but it’ll be a lot more fun than the nothing we’ve got before it.
Saturday the 25th sees the swell peak at 3 ft from the SSW, but the energy is already dropping. By Sunday the 26th, it’s fading fast. From there, it’s back to the flatness for the rest of the 16 days. The last few days of July and into the 29th, we’re looking at zero combined swell energy and flat calm conditions.
So, the only real standout here is that window from Wednesday, July 22nd through Friday, July 24th. It’s not a classic Pipe session, but it’s the only clean, long-period swell on the board. Don’t expect big crowds though – the consistency is low, so when it’s on, it’ll be worth a paddle.
Rusty.
