Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipe for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the first week and a half is a tough one. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing really happening. The wave energy is weak, with values like 58 and 138 early on, and it doesn’t get much better. The wind is locked in from the ENE, blowing cross-offshore, which is good for keeping things clean, but the swell is just too small – mostly 0.7ft to 2ft – and coming from the wrong direction. It’s not until the morning of the 14th that we see the energy tick up a bit to 556, but even then the swell is only 3ft and the comment is still “marginal.” So, for the first six days, there’s just nothing to get excited about.
The standout moment, and it’s a real long-range promise, comes on the 24th and 25th of July. On the Friday morning of the 24th, we start to see some life. The swell is 3ft from the SSW with a period of 18 seconds, and the combined energy is climbing to 629. That’s a solid groundswell starting to push in. The water is about average for the time of year, around 79°, so no weirdness there.
Saturday the 25th is the one to circle. The morning shows a 3ft swell from the SSW with a 16-second period, and the energy is pumping at 631. By the afternoon, it pushes to 4ft from the same direction, with energy up to 701. The wind is still a cross-off from the ENE at 16 mph, keeping the surface clean. It’s still a bit short of the big stuff, so it’s not a total washout for the average surfer, but it’s definitely the best we’ve got on offer. Pipeline (Oahu) is the only break in the picture, and it’s a reef setup that loves a long-period SSW swell. The direction is a bit off the optimum WNW, but that energy and period will still produce some good, shaped-up waves. Keep in mind, crowds are often an issue at Pipe, so you’ll be sharing the peak.
Everything before that is a write-off. The 23rd shows a bit of a tease with a 1ft, 22-second SSW swell, but the energy is just 238 and the score is still a marginal 1. So, hold out for the end of the month. The long-range forecast looks promising, but as always, things can change.
Rusty.
