The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here again, this time in feet and miles per hour for the imperial crew.
Right from the get-go, this 16-day forecast starts flat. No surf worth mentionin’ until the first decent pulse on Thursday, 20th of August. The break we’re talkin’ about is Pipeline – a gnarly reef for advanced surfers only. If you ain’t comfortable in heavy, shallow water, leave it to the pros.
Thursday morning, 20th of August, we get a small but noticeable groundswell: 2ft from the SW, with a very long period of 18 seconds. Combined wave energy is 316 (moderate). Wind is a gentle cross-off from the ENE at 9 mph, so the surface will stay clean. Water temp is 80°, about average for the time of year. Still, the surf is considered marginal – the tide might be tricky and the size is just barely there.
The real standout is Friday morning, 21st of August. Swell is still around 2ft from the SW with a period of 17 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. Combined energy climbs to 353 (moderate). But the wind is the hero: a light breeze from the east at just 6 mph, cross-off, makin’ that reef line glassy and smooth. It’ll be clean, shaped-up, and the crowd will be thick (it’s Pipeline, mate, crowds are inevitable). If you’re an expert, this is your moment. The report calls it good surf conditions.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are marginal – similar size, but wind picks up to 12-15 mph from the east, still cross-off. Energy drops a bit (326 down to 226). Still rideable, but not as crisp as Friday.
The second week, from Monday the 24th through to the 31st, is spotty. There are pulses of energy – Tuesday the 25th morning hits 313 combined (SW, 16 seconds, 2ft), and Sunday the 30th morning has 334 – but the wind is moderate to fresh cross-off at 15-19 mph. The report flags most of these as poor or marginal. Even on the 31st, combined energy jumps to 445 (strong), but the swell is still only 3ft and the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-off, which will chop it up a bit. Might still be fun for a local charger, but no match for that clean Friday.
Your best bet is Friday morning, 21st of August at Pipeline. Light wind, long-period groundswell, clean conditions. The rest of the run is small or average. This spot is for experts only, so if you’re not that level, just watch the show.
Rusty.
