The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s talk about Pokai Bay in feet and degrees.

The surf is on the small side right now. The water temp is 81°, right where it should be for this time of year, so no drama.

From Sunday the 2nd through Tuesday the 4th, the swell is barely 2 ft, with combined energy between 63 and 154. It’s surfable but very ordinary. The wind is light, sometimes glassy, but the waves just aren’t there.

Wednesday the 5th brings a longer period (16 seconds) but still only 1 ft. The energy is up to 132, but it’s a tease. By Friday the 7th, the period hits 21 seconds, but at 1 ft, it’s more of a gentle lap.

The real standout kicks off Saturday the 8th. Swell bumps to 2 ft, and combined energy jumps to 275. The wind is offshore from the ENE at 12-15 mph, keeping the surface clean. The swell direction is from the SSW, right in the sweet spot for this spot. Pokai Bay is a beach and reef setup, so that long-period groundswell will wrap in clean. Sunday the 9th and Monday the 10th keep the energy in the 253 to 303 range, with 2 to 2 ft of swell.

Tuesday the 11th is the best of the lot. The afternoon sees combined energy of 323, with 2 ft of swell from the SSW at 14 seconds. Offshore wind from the ENE at 15 mph. This is the one to aim for. Just be ready for the usual crowd.

The second week stays in the 2 to 3 ft range, with energy mostly between 200 and 348. The wind stays offshore, and the swell shifts to the W by the 13th. The 15th and 16th look promising, with 3 ft and energy around 302-306, but it’s a long-range call, so take it with a grain of salt.

For beginners, the swell stays under 5 ft, so it’s safe. For experts, it’s on the small side, but those long-period swells will give you the best shape.

Best window: Saturday 8th through Tuesday 11th, with Tuesday afternoon as the standout.

Rusty, out.

Short Range Forecast

Mostly dry. Warm (max 28°C on Mon afternoon, min 24°C on Mon night). Winds decreasing (fresh winds from the ENE on Sun morning, calm by Tue afternoon).

Days 4-6 Weather Summary

Mostly dry. Warm (max 28°C on Fri afternoon, min 25°C on Wed morning). Wind will be generally light.
