The Lowdown

Alright, let’s talk about it in feet and degrees.

It’s a quiet start, no doubt. The first few days are small and not worth paddling out for. The action really starts to kick from Saturday the 8th of August through to Wednesday the 12th. That’s the sweet spot.

The best energy comes in on Saturday morning with a combined swell energy of 337 (moderate). We’re looking at a consistent 2 to 3 feet of swell out of the SSW, with a long period of 14 to 16 seconds. That’s proper groundswell. The wind is offshore from the ENE, moderate, keeping the faces clean. The water is about 80°F, which is normal for this time of year.

Yokohama Bay is the only break in the game. It’s a very consistent spot, exposed to the swell. The optimum direction is WNW, but the SSW swell will wrap in fine. The highlight is Saturday morning with 2 feet and 14 seconds, and Tuesday morning (11th August) with 3 feet and 15 seconds. Offshore wind, clean conditions, and good energy. That’s your window. Expect some company, it can get a few heads out there.

After the 12th, it drops off sharply. The swell gets smaller, the period shorter, and while the wind stays offshore, the quality slips to “surfable but ordinary” then “poor” through the middle of the second week. There’s a tiny bump on the 19th of August with a 2 foot west swell, but the wind is strong and the conditions are just average.

So, mark your calendar for the 8th to the 12th. That’s the run.

Rusty.
