The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Rockaway (beach and reef) over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week or so is pretty grim. There’s a lot of onshore wind and choppy, messy conditions, and the scores are flat. The swell shows up, but it’s just not coming together. We’ve got a run of poor surf from Sunday 23rd of August right through till at least Tuesday 1st of September. The wind is mostly cross-on or onshore from the west or west-northwest, and the wave state is described as “choppy” or “lumpy” for most of that time. The combined swell energy is moderate early on, around 353, but it’s not making any difference.
Now, there’s a massive gap in quality here – almost a week of nothing to get excited about. But then things start to look interesting. The standout window is from Wednesday 2nd of September onwards.
The real gem is Wednesday 2nd of September, morning. We’ve got a 7ft swell from the west-northwest, with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind is glassy – absolutely dead calm. The combined energy is strong at 625, and the conditions are described as “glassy.” That’s your best bet. It’s a solid size, clean, and the direction is straight from the optimum NW. For advanced surfers, that’s a proper session. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so expect company.
After that, Thursday 3rd of September morning is still decent – 7ft from the west-northwest, period 9 seconds, combined energy 1106, with a light cross-shore wind. It’s not as clean as the glassy morning, but it’s still rideable.
Then Friday 4th of September morning looks promising too – 6ft from the west-northwest, period 8 seconds, combined energy 458, with a light cross-offshore wind and clean conditions. That’s another good one.
Saturday 5th of September morning is also a standout – 7ft from the northwest, period 9 seconds, combined energy 811, with a light cross-offshore breeze and clean surf. That’s a proper swell for the weekend, but at 7ft, it’s getting into the “experts only” territory.
The water temperature is about average for the time of year – nothing unusual there.
For the second week, the strong runs continue but with less certainty. Sunday 6th and Monday 7th of September have decent swells around 5ft to 6ft from the northwest, with periods up to 10 seconds, and lighter winds. The glassy morning on Monday 7th with 5ft from the NW and a period of 9 seconds, combined energy 400, is worth a look too.
Overall, the best on offer is that Wednesday 2nd of September morning glassy session. If you’re a confident surfer, the Saturday 5th morning is also a cracker. After a long, frustrating gap, it finally comes good. Fingers crossed the long-range holds up.
Rusty.
