The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Sand Dollar Beach has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a slow start. The first few days are messy. Saturday the 1st and Sunday the 2nd are seeing onshore winds and choppy, junky waves. The swell is there, but it’s not clean. The water is sitting at 55.9°F which is a whopping 5.1°F colder than normal for this time of year – that’s a seriously cold anomaly, so you’ll want a good thick wetsuit if you’re paddling out.
The real standout window opens up on Monday the 10th of August. That afternoon, we’ve got glassy conditions with the wind going dead calm. The swell is a clean 4.6ft from the WNW with a solid 10-second period, and the combined energy is sitting at 600 (moderate energy). It’s going to be real clean, lined-up waves. Tuesday the 11th morning is looking very similar with glassy conditions and a 4.6ft WNW swell; that’s the pick of the fortnight for sure. The waves won’t be huge, but they’ll be fun and well-shaped for a beginner-friendly spot like this.
There’s another promising moment later on. On Friday the 14th of August, the afternoon session turns glassy again with a 2.6ft SSW swell carrying a very long 18-second period. The combined energy is 809 (moderate to strong). That long period means the waves will have good push and shape, and at this size, it’ll be a joy for a longboard or a funboard. Just keep in mind, with that long period, the sets will be further apart, but the paddle out will be easier.
The gap between the first decent surf and the good stuff is about a week, but once we get into the second week, the windows of clean glass are worth waiting for. When the wind is off, Sand Dollar is a nice, mellow wave. It’s a consistent spot, so it won’t stay flat for long.
