The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about what’s coming up.
The first part of this forecast is pretty quiet – not much worth paddling out for. From Thursday the 20th through the end of August, it’s mostly small, junky swell with cross-shore breezes and poor quality. There’s a real dry spell here for the first week or so.
The first bit of hope comes on Thursday, August 28th, at Willow Creek. This is a reef break, and it’s getting a long-period groundswell from the SSW with a 19-second period – that’s some proper energy moving through. Swell height is around 3 ft, but with that long period the waves will have real shape and push. The combined energy is strong (861). Wind is cross-shore from the NW at about 9-12 mph, so not clean but rideable. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, and it’s consistent. Crowds can pop up here from time to time. Decent option if you’re itching.
But the real standout is Friday, September 4th – the morning at Willow Creek. This is the one. Glassy conditions – wind from the S at just 3 mph, listed as glass. Swell is 4 ft from the WNW with a 9-second period – not a long-period swell, but clean, workable, and the best shape you’ll see in this whole window. The optimum swell direction for the break is from the W, and WNW is close enough to work well. The combined energy is moderate (305), but glassy conditions make it surf way better than the numbers suggest. This is the session to aim for. Crowds can be around *sometimes*, but for those conditions it’s worth sharing the lineup. Water temp is about normal for this time of year.
After that, it drops off again – cross-shore winds, shorter-period junk, nothing special. So hang tight through the dry patch, hit the 28th if you’re keen, and make sure you’re out there on the morning of the 4th of September.
