The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for Willow Creek over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, it's a pretty quiet start. The first proper surf window we can talk about is Saturday the 22nd of August, but honestly, it's a bit of a struggle. We've got a small 2ft SSW swell rolling in with a very long 13 second period, and the combined energy is only sitting at 230 (weak). The wind is a light cross-shore, which is okay, but it's not enough to get excited about. The water temp is about average for this time of year.

Moving into Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th, the pattern is much the same. There's a bit of S and SW swell, but it's tiny, around 1ft to 2ft. The period is long, but the energy remains low to moderate (421 to 505). The wind stays cross-shore, so nothing is cleaning up nicely. It's a frustrating stretch of marginal surf.

By Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th, the swell starts to nudge up a little, with a 2ft to 3ft S/SW swell, and the energy climbs into the moderate range (826 on the Wednesday afternoon). But the wind is still a persistent cross-shore, keeping a bit of chop on the surface. It's a bit more push, but the quality just isn't there.

The first real standout of the period comes on Friday the 28th of August. The morning is your best bet. We've got a 3ft SSW swell with a very long 18 second period, and the combined energy is now strong at 1017. The wind is a light cross-shore, which is the best we've seen. This is a long-period groundswell, so it'll be a bit more defined and have that extra bit of energy on the reef. It's a beginner-friendly break, so it's a good chance for a clean little session.

Saturday the 29th of August is another one to circle. The morning looks the pick of the two sessions. The swell is 4ft from the SSW, period at 18 seconds, and the energy is a strong 1071. The wind is a light cross-shore, keeping things tidy. This is a consistent spot, so you'll get waves. Just a heads up, it can get crowded here sometimes, so get in early.

The following week has a few waves, but it gets a bit messy. The 31st of August sees a shift in the swell direction to the WNW, but the period drops right off to a short 7 seconds. That's windswell, and it won't have the same shape. The swell height bumps up to 7ft in the afternoon, which is getting into the size where it's only for the more experienced crew. The wind is a moderate cross-shore, so it's going to be choppy.

The 1st and 2nd of September follow a similar pattern: 8ft to 8ft WNW windswell with a short 7-8 second period. The energy is strong (around 1087), but it's a messy, blown-out affair. The wind is still cross-shore, so it's not going to be a great paddle. Honestly, if the wind stays like this, it might be more interesting for the kite surfers than us.

The final standout comes on Friday the 4th of September. The swell swings back to the SSW with a 3ft swell and a very long 18 second period. The morning sees a light cross-shore wind and energy is strong at 1059. This is another clean, long-period groundswell that will work well on the reef. The 5th of September morning is also worth a mention, with a similar 4ft SSW swell, 17 second period, and strong energy (1361) with a gentle cross-shore. These are promising, but it's a long-range call, so keep an eye on it.

Overall, the best windows are the mornings of Friday the 28th of August, Saturday the 29th of August, and potentially Friday the 4th of September for the cleanest, longest-period waves.

Rusty.
