The Lowdown
Alright, buddy Rusty here. Let’s talk about Willow Creek. The first week and a half is a bust. The swell is there, but the wind is always cross-shore, messing up the surface. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
From Sunday the 19th through Wednesday the 23rd, it’s weak. We’re talking waist-high, 3 ft to 3 ft swell from the SSW, with a period of 14 to 17 seconds – a proper groundswell, but the light cross-shore wind just chops it up. The energy is moderate, with readings between 548 and 879 (combined energy). Don’t bother.
Then on Thursday the 24th, the period jumps to a massive 24 seconds. That’s an incredibly long groundswell. The swell is still small, around 2 ft to 3 ft, but the energy is strong, hitting 1114 (combined energy) on Friday morning. The wind is still cross-shore, though. It’s a massive tease.
The next few days, the swell energy stays strong, between 1004 and 1698 (combined energy), as the period drops to 15-18 seconds. The wind stays cross-shore, and the wave height builds to 4 ft. It’s still not great.
The absolute standout is Thursday, July 30th. The wind dies completely. Thursday morning is glassy, with 0 mph winds, a 4 ft swell from the SSW at 16 seconds, and moderate energy at 935 (combined energy). Thursday afternoon is even better: glassy, 4 ft, 16-second swell, and the energy jumps to 1060 (combined energy). The finder says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers” for that afternoon. That’s the session to score.
August 1st brings a bigger 7 ft swell from the S at 14 seconds, but the cross-shore wind is back, and the energy is very strong at 1820 (combined energy). That’s a messy, heavy wave for experts only. It drops off fast after that.
So, the only day to really chase is Thursday, July 30th. It’s glassy, clean, and head-high. That’s your one.
Rusty.
