The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Willow Creek.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks aren’t looking like a classic run. We’ve got a long stretch of mostly marginal surf, with a lot of that cross-shore wind messing things up. The energy is there, but it’s not coming together cleanly. The water temp is sitting at 59°F, which is about average for the time of year, so no shock there.
The first real standout is a bit of a window on Monday, July 20, in the morning. That’s the one to try and get out for. The wind drops to absolute glass – dead calm, zero wind. That’s a rare treat. The swell is a small 3ft from the SSW, but with a long period of 16 seconds, it’s got some proper groundswell grunt behind it. The combined energy is moderate (830). For a reef break like Willow Creek, that long period is a bonus, and with glassy conditions, it’ll be the cleanest we see. It’s a beginner spot, so that small size is perfect.
After that, things get a bit messy. The swell picks up a fair bit on Tuesday, July 21 – we’re talking 7ft to 7ft from the SSW, with a period of 13 to 11 seconds. That’s solid, but the wind is a gentle cross-shore, and the energy is strong (1565). The problem is the quality isn’t there; it’s just a bit of a chop. That size is getting into the territory where it’s not for beginners.
We’ve got a long gap after that. The rest of the week and into the next is a lot of the same story: cross-shore wind, marginal surf. The swell stays small, mostly under 3ft, with a few pulses of longer period from the SSW. The energy figures are moderate to strong (1000 to 1800), but the onshore or cross-shore wind just kills the shape. You’ll see a few 3ft days with 24-second periods on the 24th and 25th, but it’s paired with a moderate breeze, so it’s a frustrating combo.
By the end of the month and into the first of August, the swell drops off and the wind picks up again. Not much to get excited about. The best bet is to pencil in that Monday morning glass-off. It’s not a huge swell, but it’ll be clean and fun for a beginner.
Rusty.
