The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve been looking over the next couple of weeks for Willow Creek. It’s a bit of a tough stretch ahead, if I’m honest. There’s no real proper swell on the cards for a good while, so the start of the outlook is pretty grim. We’re looking at a long gap of nothing really worth paddling out for until the very end of the month.
Right now, through the middle of August and right up to the 29th, it’s mostly marginal stuff with cross-shore breezes and a bit of chop. The water’s a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, sitting at 64°F, but that’s about the only bright spot. The waves are small, mostly under 3ft, and the period is all over the place. The combined energy stays moderate, topping out around 773 (moderate wave energy) on the 19th, but it’s still not clean enough to get excited about. The cross-shore wind just isn’t giving us the clean face we need.
Now, I’ve got to say, there is one standout that’s worth marking on your calendar. On Sunday, 30th August, the morning session looks like it could be a proper little gem. Willow Creek is a consistent reef break, exposed to a W swell, and on that morning we’re expecting a 4ft SSW groundswell with a period of 17 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, which means good energy and shape, though at a beach setup it can break a bit straight – but here at a reef, it should hold up nicely. The wind is forecast to be glassy – dead calm – which is a huge plus. The combined energy is strong at 877 (strong wave energy). This is the pick of the bunch, no question. Just be aware that crowds are possible here at times, so get in early.
The day before, Saturday the 29th, has some marginal potential in the morning with a 3ft SSW swell and light cross-shore winds, but it’s not quite there. After that Sunday morning window, things drop back into marginal territory through to the start of September, with mostly small swell and cross-shore winds again.
So, look, it’s a long wait with a lot of flat and messy days, but that Sunday the 30th is a genuine bright spot. Get on it if you can. Stay frothy.
