The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
First up, we’ve got a rare little gem on the radar. Super Tubes is a reef break that *rarely breaks*, so when it does, you sit up and pay attention. The water is sitting at 70°F right now, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s seriously unusual, so you’ll be sweating in your wetsuit, or loving it.
The overall pattern for the next couple of weeks is pretty quiet. We’ve got a long stretch of small, ordinary surf with marginal conditions. Don’t expect much action until the end of the first week. The standout window is shaping up for Sunday the 23rd of August. On Sunday morning, we’ve got a 1ft swell from the SW with a very long period of 19 seconds. That’s groundswell, pure energy. Combined swell energy is moderate at 267, and with a light WSW breeze keeping it cross-off, it’s going to be clean. The wind is light, so expect glassy conditions at the take-off. That long period will make for some proper shaped waves, but at a reef break, it’ll be a treat. Just keep in mind that with the swell being tiny, it’s not going to be big, but the quality is the story here.
The next little window is Monday the 24th of August, morning session. Another 1ft to 2ft, this time from the S with a 14-second period, combined energy at 275, and light cross-off wind from the W. It’s another clean, small window, but the Sunday morning is the one to circle.
After that, things get a bit messy again. We see a small bump in combined energy on the 28th of August, Friday afternoon, with a 2ft swell from the SSW, period at 19 seconds, and energy jumping to 386 (moderate). The wind is a gentle WNW cross-off, so it’s clean, but the wave height is still tiny. It’s surfable, but not a standout.
The real, *maybe* bigger hope is the weekend of the 29th and 30th of August. Saturday afternoon on the 29th sees a 3ft swell from the SSW, with a 16-second period and combined energy of 512 (strong). The wind is a gentle WNW cross-off, so it’s clean. This is the biggest swell of the whole forecast period, but the guidance flags it as marginal due to tide or other factors. It’s not a guaranteed winner, but if you’re a die-hard, this is the best chance for a wave with a bit of push. The 3ft height is still small, but the energy is there. Sunday morning the 30th has a similar 3ft swell, but with a lighter wind.
Beware: Super Tubes is an advanced break, and it’s *rarely breaking*. It’s also a spot that can get crowded, so expect some company. The swell direction (SSW) is not a perfect match for the optimum W direction, but the long period groundswell will wrap in nicely.
The first week is mostly a bust. We’ve got about a 5-day gap from the 18th to the 22nd with no real recommendations. The surf is small, period is short, and winds are often cross or onshore. It’s a wait-and-see game.
The second week (from the 28th onward) looks slightly more promising with that bump in energy, but it’s still a gamble. The long-range stuff is less certain, so don’t book the time off just yet.
Summing it up: Sunday morning the 23rd of August is the best on offer for quality, clean conditions on a rare-breaking reef. Saturday the 29th afternoon is the best for size, but it’s a gamble. Everything else is small and ordinary.
Rusty.
