Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. I’ll be straight with you – the next week and a half is a bit of a flat spell for El Porto Beach. There’s some small swell running, but the wind is mostly messy, cross-onshore, keeping things choppy and poor. Don’t get your hopes up for any real surf until we get into the back half of the month.
First up, Saturday the 18th of July is where the whole outlook starts to look interesting. We’ve got a proper pulse of swell arriving, with clean conditions in the morning that’ll have you smiling. The swell comes from the SSE at 3ft with a period of 17 seconds – that’s a long period groundswell, full of energy. The combined energy is a solid 615 (moderate to strong), so you’ll feel that push. Wind is light and cross-offshore, so the waves will be clean and well-shaped. This is the standout of the whole forecast, but keep in mind, this is more than a week out, so it’s promising but not locked in. Expect a decent shoulder-high wave that’s best for intermediate to advanced surfers.
Sunday the 19th of July morning sees the swell picking up a notch. We’re looking at 4ft from the S at 16 seconds, with combined energy jumping to 847 (strong). That’s a solid, powerful groundswell. The wind is light and cross-onshore, so there’ll be a few bumps, but the energy is undeniable. This is another one for the diary, though it might be a bit much for beginners – over 5ft, it starts getting pushy.
Now, from now until then, it’s pretty grim. From the 4th to the 17th of July, you’re looking at a long run of poor to marginal conditions. The swell sticks around 1ft to 3ft, mostly from the SSW, and the period varies from 13 to 18 seconds. The wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, keeping things choppy. Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th of July have a couple of clean windows with cross-offshore light breezes, but the swell is only around 2ft to 3ft – maybe a waist-high wave if you’re lucky. Thursday morning the 9th sees a combined energy of 370 (moderate) and clean conditions, so it’s a small but tidy option if you’re desperate for a paddle.
Water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there – a wetsuit isn’t really necessary.
So, the bottom line: hang tight for the 18th and 19th of July. That’s your best shot at real waves. Everything before that is small and messy. It’s a long wait, but it looks like it’ll be worth it.
Rusty.
