The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee, let’s have a look at what’s brewing for El Porto Beach over this run. Rusty here.
Straight up – this is one of those outlooks where patience is the name of the game. We’ve got a long stretch of not much happening before things finally clean up, mostly in the mornings. The swell’s been coming from the SSW for most of it, but the wind isn’t playing ball.
The first real highlight, and honestly the only one that gets me talking, is the morning of Thursday, 27 August. The swell is a small 1 ft, but it’s a nice long-period 19-second groundswell from the SW. The wind is a cross-offshore from the SSE at just 6 mph, which should keep the surface clean and the lines looking much better than anything else on offer. The combined swell energy is moderate (220). For the size, the water’s about average for the time of year. Because it’s such a small swell, this is a good shout for beginners and longboarders wanting some clean little runners.
Before that, it’s mostly a write-off from Tuesday, 18 August through to Wednesday, 26 August. Morning conditions are often cross-shore or light cross-on with tiny swell around 1 ft to 2 ft, and afternoons are even worse with onshore winds killing the surface. The combined energy is weak to moderate, rarely cracking 250.
There’s another decent window on the morning of Sunday, 30 August. A similar set-up: 3 ft SW groundswell with a 16-second period, clean cross-off wind from the SSE at 6 mph. Combined energy is moderate (371), and the quality looks solid for the size. This is your second standout in the run, but it’s the same general small and clean scenario.
After that, the morning of Monday, 31 August is worth a paddle, with a 2 ft SSW swell and that same clean cross-off breeze. Then it fades out into September with tiny waves and light winds.
So here’s the bottom line: if you’re desperate for a surf, target those Thursday, Sunday, and Monday mornings. It’s not big, but it’ll be clean. Beginners, this is your window – the swell never tops 4 ft, so you’re safe. Crowds are "often" at El Porto, so expect company.
Rusty out.
