The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Heavens over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the start is a bit of a write-off. We’re looking at small, poor-quality surf through the first week and a bit. The swell is tiny, the wind’s messy, and there’s nothing worth paddling out for. It’s a real waiting game.
The first sign of something interesting doesn’t show up until Friday the 24th of July. The morning sees a pulse of very long-period groundswell, a 24-second interval out of the SW, with a combined swell energy of 908 – that’s moderate energy. The wind is light and straight onshore from the south, which is a bit of a bummer, but that period is speaking a different language. This is the first real glimmer.
The real standout comes on Saturday the 25th of July. We’ve got a 4 ft swell from the south with a 13-second period, and the combined energy ramps up to a solid 1196 (strong energy). The wind is a light cross-onshore from the WSW in the morning, just a light breeze. It’s still not perfect, but this is the best combo on offer. For a beginner-friendly break that’s very consistent, this is your window. The water temp is about average for the time of year.
Then again on Sunday the 26th of July, the morning has a 3 ft swell from the SSW with a long 19-second period, and combined energy at 1066. Light cross-onshore wind again. Another chance to get a few clean lines if the tide plays ball.
After that, the following week – from Monday the 27th through to Thursday the 30th – we see a consistent run of 3 ft to 4 ft SSW/SW swells with periods between 15 and 18 seconds. The energy stays strong (in the 1000s). Winds are mostly light and onshore in the mornings, but the afternoons get a moderate cross-shore or light cross-shore breeze. It’s all marginal, but for a keen surfer, there are waves to be had.
From Friday the 31st onward, it tails off again. Swell drops back under 3 ft and the energy weakens. Not much to write home about.
So, if you’re picking one, point your board at Heavens on Saturday morning the 25th of July. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best we’ve got. And keep an eye on that Sunday morning too.
Stay stoked.
Rusty.
