The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s look at what’s headed our way for Heavens. Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you — this region is gonna feel a bit of a drought for the first week and a half. The water temperature here is sitting at 70°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than normal for this time of year — that’s really unusual, like swimming in a bath compared to usual. But the surf? It’s pretty quiet.
From Wednesday 19 August afternoon through to Thursday 27 August, the swell is small, mostly around 1 ft to 2 ft, coming from the SSW or SW with periods often in the 15–18 second range. That’s a long-period groundswell, which normally means nice shape, but the energy is weak — the combined swell energy sits between 122 and 312 (weak to low-moderate). Winds are mostly cross or cross-onshore, blowing from the WNW or WSW at 6 to 12 mph, so it’s not clean. The forecast notes “poor surf conditions” for most of these sessions, with a few “marginal” calls due to tide issues. Honestly, there’s nothing worth paddling out for here — the scores are all 0 or 1 out of 10. This is a blank stretch that’s pretty normal for this area when conditions don’t line up.
Then we hit a gap in real quality until late August. On Friday 28 August morning, there’s a bump in swell — 2 ft from the SSW at a super long 19 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 444 (moderate). But the wind is cross-onshore from the WSW at 6 mph, and the wave comment still says “poor surf conditions,” so don’t get excited.
The first faint glimmer of something decent shows up on Saturday 29 August morning. The swell pushes to 3 ft from the SSW, period 17 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 581 (moderate). The wind is onshore from the SW at 6 mph, but it’s light, and the forecast rates it a 2/10 — still marginal due to tide. By Saturday afternoon, the swell is 4 ft from the SSW at 16 seconds, with energy at 704 (moderate). Wind is cross from the WNW at 9 mph, gentle, but it’s still a marginal call. For a beginner-friendly spot like Heavens, that size is fine, but the conditions aren’t clean enough to recommend.
Sunday 30 August morning offers 3 ft SSW swell with 15-second period and energy at 469, but again cross-onshore light wind and marginal. The pattern continues through to Monday 31 August with similar marginal readings. None of this is inspiring.
The standout window, if you can call it that, is around Saturday 29 August afternoon into Sunday 30 August morning. The swell is the biggest on offer — 4 ft from the SSW, with that long 16-second period providing some push. The combined energy hits 704 (moderate), which is the highest we see. But the wind is cross from the WNW at 9 mph, not glassy, so it’s not pristine. The optimum swell direction for Heavens is SW, and the forecast is coming from the SSW, which is close but not ideal. The crowds are *sometimes* present, so you might share the lineup. Given the inconsistent conditions and the fact that Heavens is very consistent but still rarely breaks well in these winds, I’d say this is a low-confidence option. The best bet is to wait for a shift in the wind or a better swell pattern.
After that, from Tuesday 1 September onward, the swell drops back to 1 ft–3 ft, with periods between 13 and 16 seconds, and energy ranging from 181 to 471. The wind remains cross or cross-onshore, and the comments stay “poor” or “marginal.” No real standouts in the second week — it’s a long, quiet stretch.
So, plain and simple: there are no good surf options in the 16-day window. The conditions are consistently poor or marginal, with small swell and unfriendly winds. Heavens is a consistent spot, but it’s just not cooperating right now. Forecasts can change, and it tends not to stay poor for long, but for now, leave the board at home.
