The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s coming up for Heavens. Honestly, looking out over the next couple of weeks, it’s a bit of a bleak picture for paddle surfing. We’ve got a good run of tiny, weak swell and tricky winds, so don’t expect much in the way of proper waves.
The water temperature is sitting at 71°, which is 6° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s really unusual, almost like a warm bath out there, but unfortunately the surf isn't matching that warmth.
The first recommendation doesn't really come until the morning of Tuesday the 18th. We’re looking at a long-period groundswell from the SSW, but it’s only 2ft. The combined energy is a weak 278, so it’s barely an option. The wind is a light cross-on from the WSW at 6 mph, which keeps things messy though not un-surfable. The whole day is poor, and the afternoon gets worse.
Wednesday the 19th is much the same story. Slightly bigger at 3ft in the morning, but again light cross-on wind from the WSW at 6 mph means chop. Afternoon picks up to a moderate cross-shore breeze and it’s not any better. The energy is still weak.
We go through a long stretch here where things just don’t get good. Most days are marked as poor conditions. Thursday the 20th shows a moment of clean-ish offshore wind from the SSW at 6 mph in the afternoon with 2ft swell, but the period is a short 14 seconds which doesn’t do much for quality.
More of the same through the weekend and into the next week. Swell height hovers around 1ft to 2ft. You’ll see a tiny spike in energy around Sunday the 23rd, with a 1ft swell showing a very long 19-second period from the SW, but the wind is onshore, and the energy is still weak at 278.
Mornings of Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th have 2ft of swell, but again light cross-on winds keep it from being clean. The long period (16 seconds) from the SW means the sets will be far apart and likely straight at the beach. The wave energy finally gets a bit of a boost on Tuesday the 25th morning, hitting 376 which is still weak, but at the high end of that range.
The standout moment across this whole period, and it’s a very modest one, is Sunday the 30th of August. We have 3ft of groundswell from the SSW with a 15-second period, and the energy is up to 340. The morning looks like light offshore wind from the SSW at 6 mph, and the afternoon is a gentle cross-shore. This is the biggest and most consistent-looking swell of the run. The water will still be unusually warm. It's not a classic but it's the best we've got.
That’s it for Heavens. It’s about as close to a flat spell as you get. Keep your eye on that last Sunday of August for a small, clean window. Rusty out.
