The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Rusty here.
Look, I’m gonna be straight with you – the next 16 days at Heavens are a real mixed bag, and honestly, it’s a bit of a grind. There’s no standout classic session in the mix, but there are a couple of windows where conditions align enough to make it worth a paddle. The water is sitting at 68°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s about 5° above average, so you can leave the thick suit at home.
The first few days, from Thursday the 16th through to the weekend, are mostly a write-off. Swell is tiny, around 1ft to 2ft, and the wind is cross-on or onshore, keeping things choppy and messy. The combined wave energy is weak. Not worth your time.
Things start to look a little more interesting around Sunday the 19th. A new S swell pushes in at 5ft to 5ft, with a solid 14 to 15-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy ramps up to over 1000, which is a moderate to strong push. The catch? The wind is still cross-on in the morning, but Sunday afternoon offers a light cross-onshore breeze and the swell tops out at 5ft. It’s still marginal, but this is the best we’ve seen so far. The cleanest conditions on Sunday afternoon could give you a few fun ones, especially if you’re happy to work for them.
Monday the 20th keeps that S swell in the 5ft to 5ft range, and the morning actually has light onshore wind. The combined energy is still strong. It’s not glassy, but it’s rideable. This is probably your best bet for the early part of the week. The swell is a little big for beginners at 5ft, but it’s not out of control.
There’s a bit of a lull from Tuesday the 21st through to Wednesday the 23rd, with swell dropping to 2ft to 3ft. The wind stays messy, and the energy drops back. Not much to get excited about.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. On Friday the 24th, we see a pulse of very long-period SW groundswell at 24 seconds, pushing 2ft. That’s an incredibly long period, and the combined energy jumps to 1100 in the morning. This kind of swell is going to be super clean and lined up, but at a beach break like Heavens, it might break too straight. The afternoon sees a bigger S swell at 5ft with a 16-second period and energy at 1378, but the wind is cross-shore. This is a day to watch – the morning might be the best window for a clean, long-period wave, but it’s not a guarantee.
The weekend of the 25th and 26th looks more promising for size. Saturday the 25th has a morning S swell at 4ft, with energy at 1366, and light cross-on wind. The afternoon drops off. Sunday the 26th has a 3ft SSW swell with a 19-second period and energy at 809, but the wind is onshore in the morning. The consistent pulse of moderate energy through the 27th and 28th, with 4ft to 4ft SSW swell and 18-19 second periods, suggests a prolonged period of rideable, if not perfect, surf. The wind remains light to moderate and cross-shore or cross-on, so it’s not going to be clean, but it’s surfable.
The last few days of the month, from the 29th to the 31st, fade back to small, weak, and wind-affected. Not worth a special trip.
The standout: If you’re looking for the best on offer, I’d put my money on Sunday the 19th afternoon, or Monday the 20th morning. The swell is up around 5ft, the period is solid, and the wind is light enough to give you a chance at some decent waves. The energy is there, it’s just a matter of catching the right tide and the cleanest window. For the more adventurous, the Friday the 24th morning with that 24-second period could be a real treat, but it’s a long-range call and a bit of a gamble.
Overall, it’s a slow burn. Heavens is very consistent, so it tends not to stay poor for long, but this stretch is more about persistence than perfection.
Rusty.
