The Lowdown
G'day, surfers. Rusty checkin' in for the next sixteen days here at Heavens. Gotta be honest, it's a long, slow haul. The first week plus is a real dry spell, with only tiny, marginal windows. The real glimmer, and it's a distant one, comes in the final week.
For the first ten days, from Wednesday the 19th of August right through to the 29th, it's a tough slog. The swell is tiny, mostly 1 ft to 2 ft, and the wave energy is weak, sittin' below 350 (230-346). The wind is a constant pain, shifting between a light cross-onshore from the WSW and a moderate cross-shore from the WNW, messin' up any chance of a clean face. Thursday afternoon the 20th has a moment with a light 5 km/h onshore breeze from the SW and a 2 ft SSW swell, but it's still real small. You'd be kiddin' yourself to paddle out for more than a splash. It's a blank stretch for any decent surf.
Now, hold on to your leashes, 'cause things start to look a little more interesting around Saturday the 29th of August. The swell starts to nudge up, hitting 3 ft to 3 ft and the wave energy climbs into the strong range, hitting 506 (506-516). The wind is still a light cross-onshore from the SW, but the swell is a clean SSW groundswell with a period of 15-16 seconds. That's proper energy, offerin' some punchy, lined-up waves, but it's a very long period, which can make it a bit fat and straight at a beach break. This trend continues into Sunday the 30th, with similar 3 ft SSW swell and energy still in the strong range (335-354), but the wind stays cross-onshore.
The biggest standout, and the one to really circle on your calendar, is Monday the 31st of August. We get a spike in the morning: a 5 ft W swell, but with a very short period of just 7 seconds. That's a messy, windswell-type wave, not a clean groundswell. The energy is high (450), but the short period means it'll be lumpy and weak. The wind is light SW cross-onshore, so it's not gonna be great. The afternoon sees it drop back to a 2 ft SSW swell. It's a bit of a tease.
After that, the first few days of September drop back into the doldrums, with tiny 1 ft to 2 ft swells and poor conditions. The whole period is a bit of a grind. If you're an absolute beginner, the small, clean-ish moments on Thursday the 20th afternoon or the Saturday the 29th morning might be okay for a paddle, but there's no real standout wave for the rest of us. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no worries there.
Heavens is a very consistent spot, but in this window, it's just not deliverin'. The forecast is a long way out for the 31st, so treat that as a promising but uncertain glimmer. For now, I'd say kick back, check the charts again next week, and hope those models hold.
Rusty.
