The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for Heavens over the next couple of weeks.
The outlook is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got consistent SW groundswell energy running through the whole period, with the combined energy of all swells directed here sitting in the moderate to strong range (300 to 962). The main issue is that the surf quality is mostly marginal, with a lot of poor conditions in the mix. The water temperature is a whopping 70°, which is 6° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual.
The first few days, starting Saturday the 18th, are a write-off. The swell is a tiny 2ft from the SW with a very long period of 18 seconds (groundswell), but the WNW cross-wind at 12 mph is making a mess of it. The wave comment says "poor surf conditions," and I’m with that. Sunday the 19th doesn’t look much better, with a light SSE cross-on breeze and small surf.
Things start to look a little more promising on Monday morning, July 20th. We see a 4ft SSW swell with a period of 11 seconds, and light offshore SSW wind at 6 mph. That’s clean. The combined energy is 343 (moderate). It’s still a marginal forecast, but for a beginner-friendly spot like Heavens, that’s the best window in the first week. The wind stays light offshore on Tuesday morning (21st) too, with a 3ft SSW swell and 16-second period, but the energy is a bit higher (485). The call is "marginal," but it’s worth a look.
The second week gets a little more interesting energy-wise. Friday morning, July 24th, has a 2ft SW swell with a very long period of 24 seconds and light offshore wind. The combined energy jumps to 672. It’s still rated "marginal," but that long period groundswell suggests some shape. The real standout, however, is shaping up for Thursday and Friday the 30th and 31st. The swell builds to 5ft from the S with a period of 14-15 seconds, and the combined energy is strong (962 on the 30th afternoon, 884 on the 31st). The wind is light cross-on, which is acceptable. The forecast is still "marginal," but for a break that’s very consistent, that’s the best energy on offer.
Honestly, the standout session looks like Thursday afternoon, July 30th, or Friday morning, July 31st. That 5ft S swell with strong energy and light wind is the best combination of size and conditions we’ll see. Just keep in mind, for a beginner break, 5ft can be a bit of a push, but it’s doable.
Overall, it’s not a classic run. The surf is consistently small and the quality is often "poor" or "marginal." But for a very consistent spot like Heavens, it tends not to stay poor for long, and the energy in the second week gives us something to look forward to. Keep an eye on that 30th and 31st.
Rusty.
