The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Heavens.

Honestly, looking at the next 16 days, it’s a pretty flat and quiet stretch for the most part. We’re not seeing any real standouts, and the surf is going to be marginal at best for a long while. The first proper recommendation doesn’t even pop up until the end of the first week, so you’re looking at a gap of several days with nothing worthwhile.

The main issue is that the swell is small and the conditions are just off. The water temperature is a toasty 70°, which is a whopping 7° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s seriously unusual, feels like a bath out there.

Let’s walk through it. Starting Sunday, July 19th, and through the whole first week, we’ve got tiny swell around 2ft to 4ft from the SW and SSW. The wind is mostly cross or cross-on, which keeps it choppy and messy. The wave energy is weak to moderate at best (values between 305 and 745). The scores are all low, and the wave comments keep saying “poor surf conditions” or “marginal.” Tuesday morning, July 21st, has a little bit of offshore wind from the SSW on a 3ft, 16-second groundswell, which is a long period, but the energy is still low (487) and it’s just not enough to get excited about.

The real kicker comes much later. On Friday, July 31st, the swell finally starts to show some life. The morning has 4ft from the SSE with a 16-second period, and the energy jumps to a strong 1042. The afternoon gets even better with 6ft from the SSE and a massive 1892 energy reading. This is a proper long-period groundswell. The wind is light cross-on, so it should be clean. This is the best on offer for the whole outlook, but it’s still rated as marginal. This size (6ft) is getting into the territory where it’s a bit much for beginners. The direction is SSE, which is not the ideal SW that Heavens likes best, so it might not be breaking perfectly.

That swell carries into Saturday, August 1st, with 6ft from the S in the morning (offshore wind from SSW, clean) and 5ft in the afternoon (cross-shore). The energy is still high (1187 and 995). This is another promising window, but again, it’s not a guarantee.

After that, it drops off fast. Sunday, August 2nd, has 4ft from the S, and by Monday, August 3rd, it’s back to tiny 1ft to 2ft junk with weak energy (99 to 188). So, the only real window of hope is that final weekend of July into the start of August. It’s a long way off, so treat it as a maybe, but it’s the only thing on the radar.

Rusty out.
