The Lowdown
Alright, the surf’s been pretty quiet around here for a while, but I’m starting to see a bit of life stirring in the deep. Let’s break it down.
First up, the water temp at Heavens is sitting at 71°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, so you’ll be in for a surprisingly warm paddle.
The next week or so is pretty flat. The swell energy is weak, with readings between 122 and 334 (moderate energy at best), and the wave heights are hovering around 1ft to 2ft. The winds are mostly cross or cross-on, so the surf is small and messy. Not much to get excited about until later in the period.
The first real standout comes on Wednesday, 26th August. The morning shows a 3ft swell from the south with a 12-second period, and the energy jumps to 639 (moderate). The wind is light and onshore from the south, so it’s clean. The afternoon picks up a bit more size, 4ft from the south with a 14-second period, and energy at 740. That’s the best of the first week, but it’s still only marginal surf.
From Thursday 27th August through Saturday 29th August, the swell builds a bit more. Thursday morning has 5ft from the SSW with a 14-second period, and combined energy at 839 (moderate). The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s workable. Friday holds 4ft with similar energy, and Saturday morning has 3ft but with a very long 17-second period. That’s a groundswell, and it’s best for a point or reef break, not a beach break where it might break too straight.
The best bet overall looks like Thursday 27th August morning. The swell is 5ft from the SSW, the wind is a light breeze, and the energy is moderate. It’s still a marginal call, but it’s the pick of the run. The break is Heavens, which is a very consistent beginner spot, exposed to the SW swell, and crowds can show up sometimes. For a beginner, this is the best window.
After that, the swell drops back into the 1ft to 3ft range through the end of August and into early September, with weak energy and poor surf conditions. There’s a possible late pulse on Thursday 3rd September afternoon, with a 4ft swell from the west, but the period is short at 10 seconds, so it’s not a standout.
Overall, the first week is a write-off, but from Wednesday 26th August to Saturday 29th August, there’s a small but clean window. Thursday 27th August morning is the highlight. After that, it goes quiet again.
