The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer. I’m gonna be straight with you—this is a frustrating outlook for Heavens. The first recommendation doesn’t even pop up until Tuesday the 25th of August, and even then it’s only a marginal call. Before that, from Friday the 21st through Monday the 24th, it’s pretty much a write-off: tiny swell, poor conditions, and cross-shore winds making a mess of things. That’s a solid four-day gap of nothing worth paddling out for.
Heavens is a very consistent beginner-friendly spot, exposed to the SW swell, and it’s usually a good option when the magic lines up. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing to get excited about there.
The best of the bunch looks to be Thursday the 3rd of September into Friday the 4th, but you’ve got to be patient. On Thursday morning, the swell ticks up to 3ft from the SSE with a period of 15 seconds, and combined energy hits 686 (moderate). The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s not perfect, but it’s rideable. Thursday afternoon drops to a gentle cross-shore breeze with a 4ft SSE swell, period 16 seconds, and energy of 888 (moderate). Then Friday the 4th of September is the real standout: morning brings a clean, light onshore breeze with a 4ft SSE swell, period 16 seconds, and combined energy of 1104 (strong). That’s the biggest, most energetic swell in the window. The wind is almost glassy, so the waves should be peeling nicely. It’s a solid option for intermediates and up—4ft is fine for most. Friday afternoon holds similar size and energy, but with a light cross-shore, still good.
Saturday the 5th of September morning sees a slightly bigger 5ft SSE swell, period 14 seconds, and energy jumps to 1368 (strong). That’s getting into the territory where it’s more for experienced surfers, especially with a bit of size. The wind is light onshore, so it’ll be a bit lumpy but still interesting.
Given the long gap of poor surf, this is a real test of patience. The 4th and 5th of September are the ones to circle, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on the forecasts. Crowds are possible at Heavens, so expect a few locals out if it cleans up.
