The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next 16 days at Heavens are a bit of a mixed bag, and it’s gonna be a slow start. We’re looking at a long stretch of marginal to poor conditions, so don't get your hopes up too early. There’s a lot of waiting around, but a couple of sessions might just be worth paddling out for.
Heavens is a beginner-friendly spot, very consistent, and it's exposed to the SW swell. The water temperature is sitting at 70°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home.
The first real chance to wet a line doesn't come until Sunday morning, the 19th of July. The swell is a tiny 2ft from the SW, but the period is a solid 17 seconds. That’s a long period groundswell, which means better shaped waves and more energy, but it can be a bit tricky at a beach break. The combined swell energy is moderate (412). The morning wind is light and offshore from the S, so it’ll be clean. Conditions are still described as "marginal", so it’s more of a paddle and a hope than a full-on session.
The afternoon of Sunday the 19th sees the swell bump up to 3ft, still from the SW, with a 17 second period. The combined energy is stronger (617), but the wind swings to a moderate cross-shore from the WNW. Still, it’s a gentle breeze, so it’s not a total write-off. It’s a 2 out of 10, but with the right tide, there might be a few fun ones.
The morning of Monday the 20th has a slightly bigger 4ft swell from the SSW, but the period drops to 11 seconds. The wind is light and offshore from the S, so it’s clean, but the combined energy is moderate (348). Again, it’s a marginal call.
The next standout is a long way off. The morning of Friday the 24th of July has a 2ft swell from the SW, but the period is a massive 24 seconds. That’s very long period groundswell, and the combined energy is strong (809). The wind is light and offshore from the SSW. This is a promising one – long period swells are best at points and reefs, and at a beach break like Heavens, it might break a bit straight, but the energy and clean conditions could make for some surprisingly long rides.
The morning of Saturday the 25th of July has a 2ft swell from the SW with a 21 second period. The combined energy is strong (872). The wind is light but cross-onshore from the S, so it’s not glassy, but those long-period lines will still have some push.
The period from the 24th to the 27th of July actually has some consistent energy, with the combined swell energy often in the 700s and 800s. The swell stays small, around 2ft to 3ft, but the period is long, and the wind is often light or offshore in the mornings. The mornings of the 27th (Monday) and 28th (Tuesday) of July both have 3ft swells from the SSW with 18-second periods, light offshore winds, and strong energy (801 and 757). These are the best bets within the second week, but remember, it's still a marginal outlook.
The last real push comes on the morning of Saturday the 1st of August. The swell is 5ft from the S, with a 13-second period. The combined energy is strong (723). The wind is light and cross-onshore from the SW. At 5ft, it’s on the edge of being too big for beginners. The afternoon sees the swell drop to 5ft, but the wind turns to a gentle cross-shore from the WNW.
After that, it drops off quickly. The morning of Sunday the 2nd of August has a tiny 2ft swell with a combined energy of only 177 (weak), and the period is 13 seconds. The afternoon is even worse with a 2ft swell and a period of just 8 seconds. That’s short period, weak windswell, and not worth the effort.
So, the best of the bunch is the morning of Friday the 24th of July – that very long period groundswell with clean offshore winds has the most potential. The mornings of the 27th and 28th of July are also solid, consistent options. For the rest of it, it’s a lot of waiting for small, marginal windows. The crowds at Heavens are "sometimes" busy, so you might have it to yourself on these quieter days.
Rusty.
