The Lowdown

Alright, let’s talk about Topanga Point. The outlook for the next couple of weeks is a real mixed bag. Right now, things are pretty flat and messy. We’re seeing small, weak swell with a lot of onshore wind, so the water is choppy.

The water temp is sitting at 75°, which is far warmer than normal for this time of year – feels like bathwater. The combined swell energy is moderate, reading 474 (moderate wave energy), but the quality just isn’t there.

For August 30th, the afternoon has a 3ft swell from the SSW with a 14-second period, but it’s cross-onshore from the WSW at 9 mph, making it choppy. Not a good time.

The next few days are slim pickings. Monday morning the 31st has a small 3ft swell and light onshore wind, but it’s still marginal. Tuesday and Wednesday are similar – tiny waves in the 2-2ft range and not clean.

There’s a glimmer of hope on Sunday, September 6th. The morning shows a moderate offshore wind from the N at 12 mph, cleaning up a 3ft, SW groundswell coming in at a long 15-second period. The combined energy is 329 (moderate wave energy). This is actually looking surfable and clean – the offshore wind will make it glassy. It’s not huge, but it’s the best we’ll see. The afternoon holds similar conditions with a slightly lighter offshore breeze. This is the standout window.

Now, look at Monday, September 7th. The morning brings a solid 8ft swell from the S, with a 13-second period. The combined energy jumps way up to 1935 (very strong wave energy). That’s a lot of water. The wind is only light cross-onshore, so it might be fat and powerful. At 8ft, this is for experienced surfers only – beginners should stay well clear. The water will be moving heavy. This is the biggest pulse of the forecast, but the direction from S isn’t ideal for Topanga Point, which likes a more W angle.

After that, the surf drops off hard. By the 7th afternoon, the swell collapses to 0.7ft. The rest of the second week, from the 8th through to the 14th, is a long stretch of tiny, poor-condition waves. Most days show 1ft to 2ft with cross-onshore or onshore winds. The combined energy is weak to moderate (under 400) and the surf quality is either poor or marginal.

Overall, if you’re patient, Sunday, September 6th morning is the real standout – clean, offshore winds and a long-period groundswell. Monday, September 7th has the size for the experienced crew. After that, it’s a flat spell for over a week.

Stay tuned, things change.
