The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get stuck into what’s ahead for 64th Place.

Honestly, looking at this 16-day window, I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. The data is painting a pretty grim picture for the whole period. From the first record on Sunday, August 2nd, right through to Monday, August 17th, every single session is rated as poor surf conditions. There’s not a single standout day or break to recommend, not one. We’re looking at a solid 16-day gap with no real surf on offer.

The swell is tiny and messy. On Sunday the 2nd, we’re starting with a tiny 1 foot swell from the SW, but it’s a long-period groundswell at 18 seconds. The combined energy is weak at 103. The wind is onshore, blowing straight from the same direction as the swell, so you’d be fighting a bumpy, wind-affected mess. The water temperature is 71.6°, which is a solid 5.6° warmer than normal – that’s very unusual for this time of year, water feels like a bath.

We see a very slight bump in height around August 9th and 10th, with swell hitting 2 feet, but the wind stays cross-onshore or onshore, so it’s still just poor. By the end of the second week, around August 14th and 15th, the combined energy actually climbs to a moderate 345, with a 2.6 foot swell from the SSW, but the wind is still onshore or cross-onshore. It’s just not coming together.

The only real change is on Monday, August 17th, when the swell jumps to 3.3 feet from the west, but with a short period of only 7 seconds. That’s windswell, and with onshore winds, it’s going to be a choppy, bumpy mess. 64th Place is a sheltered beach and reef setup, and with the wind direction constantly working against the swell direction, this spot is staying flat and ugly. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for a kite session than a paddle.

There’s nothing to get excited about here. A blank run like this is just one of those stretches. Keep an eye on it, forecasts can change, but for now, take a break.
