The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Alright, straight up, the next week and a half is going to be a tough slog. We're looking at a long stretch of hardly any surf to speak of. From now right through to Friday the 7th of August, it's basically flat. The swell is tiny, mostly around 1.0ft to 2ft, and the wave energy is pitiful, reading between 85 and 146 (weak energy). The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, so it's a write-off for any decent waves. You'd be better off finding another hobby for a bit.
There's a little glimmer late on Friday the 7th of August, when the wind goes glassy. The swell is still only 1ft, but a very long period of 20 seconds from the SW gives it a bit of life. The combined energy creeps up to 177 (still weak), but at least it's clean. Magics is an inconsistent reef break, so don't expect much, but it's the first sign of hope.
The real action looks like it might start firing up on Sunday the 9th of August. The swell is still small at 2ft, but the wind is glassy again, and the energy jumps to 445 (moderate). That's a promising sign for the afternoon. Going into the second week, the swell builds steadily. By Wednesday the 12th of August, we're seeing 3ft to 3ft waves from the south with a long period of 17-18 seconds and energy around 900 (strong). These are groundswell pulses, so they'll have some punch but might be a bit fat on the beach. Magics is a reef break, so it should handle the longer period well.
The standout period looks to be Thursday the 13th of August through to Saturday the 15th of August. On Thursday the 13th, the swell hits 4ft from the south with a period of 16 seconds and energy over 1000 (strong to very strong). The wind is light and cross-shore, which is a big plus for clean conditions. It's still a bit small for the advanced guys, but it'll be fun. On Friday the 14th, the swell shifts to the west, 4ft, similar energy. The following Saturday the 15th of August, the swell peaks at 4ft from the west, but the wind is a bit stronger and cross-onshore, which will mess with the surface. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no wetsuit drama.
Given the long period and the reef setup, Magics is your best bet for a clean wave when the wind plays ball. The crowds can be there sometimes, but it's worth the paddle. The consistent energy from the 9th onward suggests it won't be a complete bust, but the first week is a definite write-off.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the 9th onwards.
Rusty.
