The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let me break down what’s happening at Disappearing Sands over the next couple of weeks. Straight up, this is a lean stretch – nothing’s firing, and we’re mostly looking at small, weak surf with tricky winds most days. There’s a real flat spell in here, so don’t expect much action.
Now, for the first break, Disappearing Sands is a beginner’s spot that’s exposed to the WNW, and it’s inconsistent – so wave-catching takes patience. The water’s sitting about average for this time of year at 81°F, so nothing weird going on there.
Alright, let’s walk through it day by day. Monday the 17th afternoon is a no-go: you’ve got a 1ft swell from the WNW with a period of 11 seconds, only 66 combined energy (weak), and a 10 km/h onshore W breeze just messing it right up.
Tuesday the 18th stays small and poor. Morning shows 1ft at 11 seconds from the WNW with weak energy at 48, cross-on NW wind at 15 km/h, and it’s just choppy junk. Afternoon doesn’t get much better – 1ft shifting to a SW direction at 18 seconds, but still only 96 energy, and a light cross-on WNW breeze. Not worth a paddle.
Wednesday the 19th has a little better late window. Morning’s a write-off with 1ft SW swell at 16 seconds, 116 energy, and a cross-on wind. But Wednesday afternoon – now that’s a blink of hope. The swell stays at 1ft from the SW, 16-second period, 112 energy, and it goes glassy. That’s clean as a whistle but tiny. It’s surfable but very ordinary – you’re looking at knee-high dribblers. Still, if you’re desperate, that’s your window.
Thursday the 20th is poor all day. Morning bumps up to 2ft from the SSW at 18 seconds, energy up to 217 (still moderate), but the cross-on WNW breeze at 10 km/h puts a cap on it. Afternoon’s similar with 2ft SW at 17 seconds, 165 energy, and a light onshore W wind. No joy.
Friday the 21st same story – 2ft SW, 16-second period, cross-onshore or onshore winds, energy in the 150s. Just small and messy.
Saturday the 22nd morning has 2ft from the SSW at 16 seconds, 233 energy, but cross-on wind again. Afternoon brings a risk of thunderstorms with a tiny 2ft SW swell – not your friend.
We’ve got a real quiet gap here. From Monday the 24th through to the 29th, the swell drops and changes direction weird. For example, Wednesday the 26th afternoon jumps to 3ft from the N with only a 7-second period – that’s weak, short-period windswell, and energy crashes to 89. Absolutely poor. The 27th and 28th are similar with N and NNE swells at 6-7 seconds – just not surfable. This is a dead zone.
But then Sunday the 30th afternoon – that’s a real standout. It’s the best of the whole run. The swell is only 2ft from the W, but the period stretches to 16 seconds (long period groundswell) and combined energy jumps to 272 (moderate). The wind goes glassy from the SSW at 5 km/h. You’ll have clean, lined-up little waves – small but beautifully shaped. For a beginner spot, that’s as good as it gets here. Expect good conditions.
Monday the 31st is a step back – 2ft from the W at 15 seconds, 159 energy, and cross-shore winds from the SSW at 10 km/h. Ordinary.
Finally, Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon looks decent again. Same 2ft from the W at 14 seconds, 212 energy, and glassy conditions with a 5 km/h W breeze. Another clean small-wave session.
Best of the bunch? Sunday the 30th afternoon and Tuesday the 1st September afternoon – both glassy with clean, long-period little runners. Everything else is flat, choppy, or weak. Disappearing Sands is a tricky, inconsistent spot, so you take the clean windows when they come.
Rusty out.
