The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty.
The next two weeks are looking pretty slow here overall. For most of the period there’s just not enough energy, and the wind is often a bit scratchy. That said, there are a few windows where it could be worth a paddle, especially if you’re patient.
The first real chance to get wet is Monday, August 17, but honestly, it’s not much to write home about. Kahalu'u Beach Park has a tiny 3ft S swell, period around 14 seconds, combined energy of 303 (moderate). The wind is light onshore from the W, so it’s pretty messy. Water temp is 81°, about 1° warmer than the norm – nothing wild, just a touch warm for this time of year. This spot is a reef break, beginner-friendly, and consistent, but the surf conditions are poor. Not the day to get excited.
The next few days are a grind. Tuesday the 18th through to Saturday the 22nd see small 2-2ft swell, mostly from the S or SW, with periods between 12-18 seconds. The combined energy is in the 184-224 range (weak to moderate). Wind is cross-onshore or onshore most of the time, so it’s choppy and uninviting. There is a brief glass-off Wednesday afternoon the 19th with 2ft S swell, period 12 seconds, low energy of 184 – but it’s small and weak. Not a standout by any stretch.
Now, if you’re looking for the best of the bunch, circle Sunday, August 23. The afternoon glass-off is real: clean, light wind, 2ft SSW swell, period 15 seconds, with combined energy of 262 (moderate). That’s a long-period groundswell, which will wrap nicely around this reef. It’s a beginner break, so expect others to be out since it gets crowded sometimes, but the conditions will be good. This is your best early bet.
Then there’s a stretch from Monday the 24th to Tuesday the 25th. Monday afternoon sees zero wind, glassy conditions, with 2ft SSW swell, period 13 seconds, moderate energy of 243. Tuesday morning and afternoon are also glassy, with 2-2ft SSW swell, period 16 seconds, energy of 232-273. These are all clean, but again – small. Good for a longboard or a foamie session, not much push.
Wednesday the 26th into Thursday the 27th sees a bump in energy. Thursday morning has 3ft S swell, period 16 seconds, combined energy hitting 518 (strong). The wind is cross-shore from the SSW though, not ideal, but the power is there. Thursday afternoon has 3ft S swell, 16 seconds, energy 532 (strong), but the wind shifts onshore. Still, the swell is decent.
The real standout, if you can wait, is Saturday, August 29. The afternoon shows a solid 6ft S swell, period 10 seconds, combined energy screaming at 892 (very strong). That’s a lot of water moving. But – it’s a short-period swell, and for a reef break like Kahalu'u, it’s likely too big for beginners. The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’ll be a bit bumpy. This one’s for experienced surfers only.
Sunday, August 30 has two nice glassy sessions: morning with 4ft S swell, period 7 seconds (short period – not great shape), combined energy 304 (moderate), and afternoon with 1ft SSW swell, period 17 seconds (super long period), energy 302. Again, small but clean.
The rest of the run into September 1 has small, glassy windows but nothing that’ll get the heart racing.
So, the best two moments: the glassy afternoon of Sunday, August 23 for clean, fun little waves, and the powerful but expert-only swell on Saturday afternoon, August 29. If you’re a beginner, stick with the 23rd.
Rusty.
