La Perouse Bay/The Dumps Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for La Perouse Bay/The Dumps over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, it’s a bit of a slow start. We’ve got a tiny 2ft SSW groundswell rolling in on Wednesday the 29th, with a very long 13-second period and a combined energy of 212 – that’s weak wave energy. Water temp is sitting at 80°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The wind is a light cross-on from the SSE at just 3 mph, and the surf report calls it “poor”. Honestly, it’s not worth paddling out for.

Thursday the 30th through Sunday the 2nd of August sees a bump in size, but we’re dealing with a short-period E swell (7 to 8 seconds) pushing 5ft to 7ft. That’s a lot of close-out, choppy energy. The combined energy climbs into the moderate range (610 to 963), but the wind is a cross-off breeze that’s ramping up to 15-18 mph. It’s clean-looking, but that short period makes for frustrating surfing. The morning of Friday the 31st gets a score of 2/10, which is the best you’ll see in this stretch, but it’s still just marginal.

The real standout, the one worth pointing your car at, is Monday the 3rd of August in the morning. The swell drops to 4ft, but it’s from the E with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 446 – moderate, but much better shaped. The wind is a light, cross-off breeze from the ENE at 6 mph, and the report says “expect good surf conditions”. That’s the cleanest window of the whole run. This is a reef break, advanced only, and it’s inconsistent, so you’ll need to be patient and know what you’re doing. Crowds are only “sometimes” an issue here, so you might get a few waves to yourself.

After that, we hit a long dry spell. From Tuesday the 4th right through to Sunday the 9th of August, the swell drops to tiny 1ft to 2ft with weak energy (71 to 227). The wind stays cross-off but the conditions are rated “poor” or “very ordinary”. The waves just aren’t there.

Then there’s a glimmer more than a week out. On Monday the 10th of August morning, we see a 3ft SSW groundswell with a very long 16-second period. The combined energy jumps to 752 – strong wave energy. The wind is a gentle cross-off from the ENE at 9 mph. This is a promising long-range call, but it’s less certain. That long period means the sets will be clean and powerful, perfect for this reef setup, but expect long waits between them. From Tuesday the 11th onward, the swell drops back below 3ft and the energy fades.

So, to sum it up: the best bet is Monday morning, August 3rd. If you’re an advanced surfer who doesn’t mind an inconsistent spot, that’s your window. The long-range Monday the 10th is worth keeping an eye on, but don’t book your flights yet.
