Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve had a good look at what’s on the cards for Timber Cove over the next few weeks, and to be honest... it’s a bit of a rough stretch. Let’s get into it.
We’re looking at a long, quiet start with nothing really worth saddling up for. From Monday the 6th of July right through to the 16th, it’s pretty much a write-off. There’s swell around, but the wind is stuck in a cross-shore groove and just chopping everything up. Real poor conditions day after day. You’re getting some weak energy in the water early on, with combined swell energy around 516 (moderate) on Monday afternoon, pushing up to 696 by Wednesday afternoon, but the wind just kills it. Water temps are sitting around 56°, which is pretty much par for the course this time of year, so no surprise there.
The first time you might actually feel a little buzz is Thursday the 9th in the morning. Swell bumps up to 7 ft from the WNW, but the period is a short, weak 8 seconds – more windswell than groundswell. Combined energy hits 1310, so there’s some push, but it’s a cross-shore wind again, making it lumpy and tough. This one is really for the experienced crew only at that size, and even then, it’s not going to be clean. Thursday afternoon drops back, and the chop doesn’t let up.
Friday the 10th morning is similar – 7 ft from the WNW, period still 8 seconds, energy at 1075 – but again, it’s messy. The wind stays cross. You’d be fighting it all session. By Friday afternoon, the swell drops back down to 3 ft from the SW, and the long period (15 seconds) means better-shaped waves, but the wind is a fresh breeze out of the WNW, just ruining any chance of a clean face.
We get a little flicker of hope on Thursday the 16th, but it’s still small and choppy. The first real shift comes Friday the 17th. We finally see the wind drop right back. Friday morning, the WSW breeze is only 3 mph, light cross-on, with a 7 ft WNW swell (8-second period) and combined energy of 1027. It’s still marginal, but the light wind means it could actually be glassy for a bit. This is probably the most promising window in the whole outlook. Friday afternoon stays light, but the swell drops to 5 ft. Still, with the wind so light, it’s your best chance for a clean-ish session.
Saturday the 18th sees the swell drop right off, down to 2 ft from the SW, with a very long 17-second period. Wind stays light, cross-on. That long period will make it walled-up and straight at a beach break like Timber Cove, so it’s not ideal – better if there’s a point or reef, but here, it’s just a bit fat and slow. Still, for a tiny wave on a long board, you might get something.
From there, into the second week, it’s a pretty flat, consistent run of small SW swell and persistent cross-shore or cross-on wind. Nothing really stands out. The 19th has a tiny 2 ft swell from the W, period 15 seconds, and an actual offshore wind from the SSW at 6 mph in the morning, which is a nice change – but the swell is just too small to get excited about.
All in all, Timber Cove is going through a tough patch. If you have to paddle out, aim for Friday the 17th morning – that’s the best on offer, but don’t expect much. For the rest of it, you’re better off waiting for the next storm track to shift.
Stay patient. Rusty.
