The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at Timber Cove. I gotta be straight with you – the next two weeks are a real mixed bag, and mostly not in a good way. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions ahead, so don’t get your hopes up too high. Let’s break it down.
We start off the outlook on Saturday, July 18th. The morning there’s a minor, long-period swell from the west pushing in at 2ft, but the energy is weak (535). The water temperature is sitting at 55°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year. The light breeze from the WSW is onshore, so it’s not going to be clean. The afternoon sees the swell drop and the wind goes cross-shore, but it’s still messy. Both sessions are a write-off.
Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are more of the same: small, weak swells from the southwest, around 2ft, with cross-onshore winds. The energy is low (281 to 488). It’s marginal at best, and honestly, the conditions are just poor. You’re not missing anything.
From Tuesday the 21st through to Friday the 24th, the swell is tiny or non-existent. Periods drop to 5-8 seconds, and the energy is pitiful (23 to 63). The wind is stubborn from the WNW, mostly cross or cross-on, and it’s just not surfable. This is a real flat spell. We’re looking at over a week of nothing worthwhile.
Now, towards the end of the month, things start to look a little more interesting. On Saturday the 25th, the morning session shows a 3ft swell from the southwest with a very long period of 21 seconds. The energy is up to 927 (moderate). The wind is cross-on from the WNW, so it’s still choppy, but the swell has some grunt. This is a long-period groundswell, so it’s going to be better for a point or reef, but Timber Cove is a beach setup, so it might break a bit straight. It’s still the best we’ve seen, but it’s far from perfect.
The following week from the 25th to the 30th, we see a consistent push of SW swell, with heights ranging from 3ft to 4ft and periods of 16-21 seconds. The energy is climbing into the 700s and 900s. The problem is the wind. It’s a relentless cross-shore breeze from the WNW or NW, often 15-22 mph. This is going to create a lumpy, cross-chop. The swell is there, but the quality is going to be blown out. The sandbars might hold some shape, but it’s going to be a battle. Honestly, for a beach break with this much wind, it might be more interesting for the kite surfers than us paddle guys.
The last couple of days into early August, the swell drops back off again. July 31st has a 5ft swell from the WNW with a short 8-second period, and the wind is light and onshore in the morning. That’s a brief moment of something, but it’s short-period and onshore.
So, the standout window? It’s not a true standout. The best bet is probably the morning of Saturday, July 25th. That 3ft, 21-second SW groundswell has the most energy of the whole run (927), and if you can find a corner that’s less wind-affected, you might get a couple of clean ones. But it’s a long-range call, and the wind is a major risk. The other possible session is the morning of July 31st, with that 5ft swell, but it’s short-period and onshore, so it’s a gamble. For the rest of it, save your energy.
Rusty.
