The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at The Fort over the next couple of weeks. It’s a reef set-up, intermediate level, and fairly exposed to the swell. The water’s sitting at 61.2°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
Honestly, it’s a pretty rough run for the next sixteen days. The Fort is consistent, but the conditions are just not playing ball. There’s a big gap with hardly anything worth paddling out for. Most of the time we’re looking at cross-shore winds, often a fresh breeze, and the wave quality is just poor. The combined swell energy is moderate to strong – hitting values like 221 in the beginning and climbing up to 727 later on – but that energy is mostly wasted with the wind messing things up.
Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are write-offs with cross-shore winds and lumpy chop. Sunday morning the 23rd is the first bit of hope: a light cross-onshore breeze with a 1.9ft swell from the SW at a very long 19 seconds, and the combined energy is 356. It’s only rated as marginal though, and that long period groundswell might be breaking a bit too straight for a reef, but it’s the cleanest we’ll see for a while.
After that, it’s back to poor surf with cross-shore winds and lumpy conditions right through to the end of August and into the start of September. Thursday the 3rd of September sees a similar story – a long-period 19 second swell, 1.6ft to 2.0ft, but the wind is cross-on or cross, keeping things choppy.
The only other standout that’s worth mentioning is the morning of Saturday the 5th of September. We’ve got a 3.3ft swell from the SSW, still with a decent 16-second period, and the wind goes light cross-shore, giving us gentle cross-chop. The combined energy is strong at 659. It’s still only marginal, but it’s the best of a bad bunch. That 3.3ft is fine for intermediates, but it’s not going to be a classic.
Bottom line: The Fort has the consistency, but the wind is the enemy here. There are no true standouts. The best bet is the morning of the 23rd of August, and then maybe the morning of the 5th of September if you’re desperate for a paddle. It’s a tough outlook.
