Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about The Fort.
Right off the bat, I gotta tell ya, it’s a bit of a grind for the next couple of weeks. We’re lookin’ at a long stretch of messy, cross-shore wind and choppy water. The wave energy is all over the place, but the wind and the conditions just aren’t lining up for a clean ride. The water temp here is bang on average for the time of year at 56°.
For Monday the 6th, it’s a non-starter. Tiny little 2ft swell from the southwest with a nice long 16-second period, but the wind is cross-on, and the report says poor surf. Same story Monday afternoon.
Tuesday the 7th sees a little bump to 5ft from the WNW in the morning, but the wind is still a moderate cross-on, and it’s labeled poor. That afternoon the period hits a very long 18 seconds, but it’s 19 mph cross-shore wind. No good.
Wednesday the 8th morning, we get a 6ft WNW swell, but the period is a short 8 seconds, it’s cross-shore wind, and it’s only rated as marginal. The combined energy is moderate (989). Not worth paddling out for.
By Thursday the 9th morning, the swell size jumps up to 7ft from the WNW with a short period, and the energy is strong (1453). But it’s another marginal call with a moderate cross-shore wind. That’s getting into expert-only territory with the size, and the wind is just killing it.
Friday the 10th clings to a 7ft WNW swell but it’s the same story: moderate cross-shore, marginal rating. It’s a real battle.
After that, the whole second week from the 11th to the 21st of July is a write-off. The swell hangs around at chest-to-head height on some days, but the wind never cleans up. Every day is cross-shore or cross-on, with light to fresh breezes that leave the surface lumpy and choppy. We see plenty of moderate to strong combined energy, but without the right wind, it’s just a washout. A few mornings have a light cross-on breeze and a faint chance, but nothing comes together.
Honestly, this is one of those stretches where the setups look more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. There is no standout session in the whole 16-day window. The most promising call is the Thursday the 9th morning with that 7ft WNW swell, but only if you’re an expert and can handle the cross-chop. Otherwise, I’d say give it a rest. The forecasts can change, but from here, it’s a hard pass.
Rusty.
