The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk it through. The Fort is the only spot in the mix, and the 16-day outlook is a grind. From the start, Monday the 17th of August through the first week, the swell is small and the wind is all over the place. The only half-decent moment in that first week is Wednesday morning the 19th, with a 2ft SW swell, but the wind is cross-on and the energy is weak (364). The Fort likes SW swell, but the wind kills it. From Sunday the 23rd onward, the swell shifts to longer period SW groundswell, but the heights drop to 1ft to 2ft. The energy is moderate at best, topping out at 300 on Friday the 28th morning, but the wind is onshore or cross-on. The ocean temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual. The standout in this whole run is the last few days of August. Saturday the 29th morning has a 3ft SW swell with a 16-second period, very light Slight air wind, and the energy hits 548. That’s moderate energy, and the nearly glassy wind means the reef could get clean. The long period (16 seconds) is ideal for The Fort’s reef setup, giving the waves shape and drive, but the sets will be slow. Sunday the 30th morning is similar, with a 3ft SW swell, 16-second period, light wind, and energy at 437. Monday the 31st morning bumps up to 3ft SW, same period, but the wind is a gentle cross-on from the SSE, and the energy climbs to 760 – that’s moderate to strong. The afternoon of the 31st with a 3ft SSW swell, 16-second period, and light cross-on wind from the SSE might be the best we see, scoring a 2. Crowds are sometimes an issue at The Fort, but with this marginal run, it’ll be quiet. The water temperature is about normal for the season. If you’re keen, save your energy for Saturday the 29th or Monday the 31st – they’re the only real chances, and they’re still not firing. Keep an eye on it, because things can change. Rusty.
