The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up at The Fort.
Alright, straight up, we’ve got a long stretch of nothing much to write home about. For the next couple of weeks, The Fort is pretty much locked in a pattern of cross-shore winds and pretty weak, messy energy. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 60°F, but that’s about the only nice thing going on.
Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st are just a write-off. Tiny 2ft swell from the SSW, cross-shore winds, and the combined energy is weak in the 200s. It’s just poor surf conditions. Saturday the 22nd gets a little bump in height with a 4ft WNW swell in the afternoon, but the period is a shocking 5 seconds and the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-shore. That’s just lumpy, gutless junk. Good for a kite maybe, not for a paddle.
We drift through the rest of the week with the same story. Swell from the SW or SSW, mostly under 3ft, and cross-shore winds. The combined energy climbs a bit, hitting 745 on the 29th, but the wind is still on it. A few mornings show a score of 1, but it’s only “marginal” at best – questionable tide or just not enough quality.
The real tease comes at the end of the run. On the morning of the 4th of September, the forecast flips. We get a 6ft swell from the WNW with an 11-second period, and the wind goes glassy. That’s the good stuff. The combined energy jumps to 1937, which is proper strong. This is the standout. It’s excellent for experienced surfers. The Fort is a reef, so a long-period groundswell like this (over 11 seconds) will wrap in nicely, giving you proper shaped waves. The afternoon stays clean with a light cross-shore, but the swell drops a touch to 6ft. This is the one to circle on the calendar, but it’s a long way out, so keep your fingers crossed.
For the rest of the run, it’s pretty grim. There’s a gap of nearly two weeks of poor to marginal conditions before that Friday morning comes alive. Keep the faith.
Rusty.
