The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Doran Beach over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start, and the first few days are really just a waiting game. Saturday the 22nd through to Monday the 24th are pretty flat or messy, with tiny swell and poor conditions. You’re better off staying on the beach for that stretch. The real action kicks off around Wednesday the 26th, when we start to see some cleaner, more organised lines.
The pick of the whole run is shaping up nicely for Saturday the 29th. The morning session is where it’s at. Doran Beach is exposed to the SW, and we’ll have a solid 4ft groundswell from the SW, with a very long period of 18 seconds, pushing a strong wave energy of 1031. The wind is light and cross-off, keeping the surface clean. This is excellent for experienced surfers – the long period will mean the waves have plenty of power and shape, but it might wall up a bit on the sandbanks. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
Another standout to circle is Friday the 4th of September. The morning session looks promising with a solid 8ft swell from the WNW, a period of 10 seconds, and very strong wave energy reading 1650. The wind is light and cross-off again, meaning clean conditions. That’s proper size, so it’s for the experienced crew only. The surf from the 4th into the 5th is the strongest and most consistent of the whole forecast.
Later in the run, on Saturday the 5th of September, we get a treat with glassy conditions in the morning. The swell is a clean 6ft from the NW, with a period of 11 seconds and strong energy of 1358. That’s a magic window – light offshore wind, clean faces, and solid waves. It’s a rare moment of perfection, so don’t sleep on it.
The middle of the forecast, around the 30th and 31st, has some size but the wind picks up strong in the afternoons, making it messy. The mornings are still worth a look, but the afternoon chop will push you off. Similarly, the start of September (1st and 2nd) sees waves getting too big for the break, hitting over 10ft, which is really only for the brave and experienced.
All in all, if you’ve got a free morning, lock in Saturday the 29th, and then keep an eye on Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th of September. The rest is a mix of clean but small, or big but windy. The crowds are only “sometimes” an issue here, so you’ve got a decent chance of finding a peak to yourself if you pick the right time.
