Alright folks, Rusty here, looking at what Doran Beach has got cookin' for us over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you, we're in for a bit of a waiting game.
Right from the start, the outlook is pretty grim. The whole first week, from Thursday the 2nd right through to about Monday the 6th, is a real struggle. The odd bit of swell shows up, but it’s tangled up with poor wind directions and dodgy tide conditions. You’ll see some wave energy around, like on the 3rd with combined energy of 451, but that doesn't mean a thing if the rest of it is junk. A lot of these days you'd be better off staying home and waxing your board. There's nothing worth paddling out for until we get a bit further into the month.
Now, things start to perk up around Tuesday the 7th. We get a bit of a clean-up with some cross-offshore wind from the WNW, and the swell starts to find its groove. It's not perfect, but it's way better than what we've been seeing.
The real standout, the one we've all been waiting for, looks to be Friday, July 10th. The afternoon session at Doran is shaping up to be the best of the run. We're looking at a solid 10ft swell from the NW, and the wind is a clean cross-offshore breeze from the WNW at 16 mph. The boys at the office are even calling it "too big for this break" – for most, that's a red flag, but for the experienced crew, that's a siren song. This is big, powerful NW energy, with a combined energy of 1188, so it’ll have some real punch. This is expert territory for sure, but if you've got the skill and the board for it, it's gonna be the session of the forecast.
Before that, Thursday morning, July 9th is a solid option too. You've got a 7ft WNW swell with that beautiful cross-offshore wind again, and the energy is high at 1065. It might not be as big as Friday, but it'll be cleaner and a bit more manageable for a strong intermediate.
As for the water temp, it’s sitting at 56°F, which is pretty much what you'd expect for this time of year, so no surprises there.
After that Friday buzz, the surf hangs around but drops off in quality. We get some more swell on Saturday the 11th, but the period is a short 7 seconds, making it a bit choppy and less organized. From Sunday the 12th on, it gets messy again with inconsistent pulses and building winds that just mess up the face. The last real chance for a wave is Wednesday the 15th, with an 8ft WNW swell and clean light wind, but even that’s a bit of a gamble with the marginal conditions.
So, to wrap it up: endure the first week, then get hyped for Friday, July 10th. That's the one.
Rusty.
