Table - best surf conditions forecast for Doran Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming down the line for us. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s a definite standout window if you time it right.
The water temperature is sitting at 57°F right now, which is basically bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real surf we’re looking at kicks off this Sunday, July 12th, with Doran-Beach. It’s an inconsistent spot, so don’t expect a party every day, but it has its moments. The swell comes in at 5ft from the WNW with a short 8-second period, so it’s a bit of a weak, disorganized windswell. The energy is moderate (555). The morning starts with a light cross-onshore breeze, so it’ll be a bit bumpy but not terrible. The afternoon stays pretty similar; it’s a light cross-shore, but the waves are small and junky. This is marginal at best – a session for a longboard and a patient heart.
Monday, July 13th, the morning looks better. The swell size stays at 5ft, but the wind goes clean cross-offshore. The wave comment says "expect very good surf conditions," and the energy is a moderate 516. This is probably the best call of the first few days. The afternoon gets a bit bigger, up to 6ft from the NW, but the wind goes cross-shore, and the quality drops. It’s light wind, so it’s not terrible, but the morning is your window.
Tuesday, July 14th, is a damp squib. The wind is cross-shore, a bit stronger, and the swell is messy. Skip it.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Wednesday, July 15th. The morning is clean again with a nice 6ft WNW swell and a gentle offshore wind. The energy is moderate (623). That’s a solid session. But the afternoon... hoo boy. The swell jumps to 10ft from the WNW, and the energy rockets up to 1242 – that’s strong wave energy. However, the notes say it’s "predicted to be too big for this break." That’s a heavy, powerful wave for a spot that’s inconsistent. This is strictly for experienced surfers only, and even then, you’ll want to be careful. The wind is a clean offshore, but 10ft is a lot of water moving.
Thursday, July 16th, and Friday, July 17th, see the swell dropping but staying around 7ft to 5ft. The wind is offshore on Thursday, but it’s a fresh breeze, making it a bit blustery. Friday is a complete write-off with onshore winds.
Saturday, July 18th, the swell drops to 3ft, but the period jumps to 16 seconds. Long-period groundswell like that holds a lot of energy (787-844). It’s small, but the long wait between sets could make it a fun, mellow day on a log. The cross-onshore wind is light, so it’s not glassy, but it’s not trashed.
From Sunday, July 19th, through to Tuesday, July 22nd, we’re in a lull. Swell bounces between 2ft and 3ft with very long periods (15-17 seconds). The energy is moderate, but the size is tiny. The morning of Wednesday, July 22nd, is clean with a cross-offshore wind and 3ft swell, but it's just ankle-biters.
The next real standout pops up on Saturday, July 25th. The swell is 4ft from the S with a 14-second period, and the energy spikes to 1323 – that’s strong wave energy. The wind is light cross-shore in the morning, turning to a moderate cross-offshore in the afternoon. The wave comment says "marginal," but that energy reading is hard to ignore. It’s a promising-looking window, but it’s a week and a half out, so keep an eye on it.
The last few days, July 26th and 27th, see the swell drop back down to 2ft-3ft and the period goes very long again (18-19 seconds). The wind is offshore, but it’s small and clean. A groveler’s dream.
The Pick: Honestly, the standout is Wednesday morning, July 15th. That 6ft clean, cross-offshore swell is the most user-friendly, quality swell in the whole window. The afternoon of the 15th is for experts only. The other potential is Saturday, July 25th – that 4ft S swell with massive energy could be a sneaky good session, but it’s a long way out, so don’t hold your breath just yet.
Signing off, Rusty.
