The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's break down what we're looking at for the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, it's a slow burner and a long wait for the real fun. The Rivermouth is a sandbar spot that rarely breaks, so we're already starting with a challenge. The first real chance to get wet doesn't come until Wednesday afternoon, the 19th, and even then it's small. The outlook is a bit bleak for a while.
The best of the early period is Wednesday afternoon, August 19th. The Rivermouth is seeing a clean 3ft swell from the SSW with a long 15-second period. That's proper groundswell energy, and the wind is dead glassy. The water is sitting at 61°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, always a nice surprise. The wave energy is moderate (523), so there's some push, but it's small. The crowd factor is "often" busy, so expect company. This is about as good as it gets in the first week.
Then we hit a real dry spell. From Thursday the 20th right through to Monday the 31st of August, the recommendations are thin. You'll get a few glassy mornings with tiny waves, like the 2ft stuff on Friday the 21st, but the swell is short and weak. There's a lot of cross-onshore wind and poor surf conditions. It's a long stretch of days where you're better off doing something else.
The real standout, and the one worth waiting for, is Sunday morning, August 30th. The Rivermouth is showing 3ft from the SSW again, with a 16-second period. That's a very long-period groundswell. The wind is glassy, and the wave energy is strong (624). This is a classic setup for a sandbar like this, but remember, with a period that long, the sets will be clean and powerful but might wall up on a beach break. Still, glassy conditions and a solid groundswell for a rarely-breaking spot is a real treat.
The next day, Monday the 31st of August, is also promising. Both the morning and afternoon have a 4ft swell from the WNW, a short 8-second period, but with glassy winds. The energy is moderate (497) and the conditions will be clean, making it a fun option for a bigger wave, though the short period means it'll be a bit more jumbled.
After that, into early September, it looks like we're back to more ordinary, marginal conditions.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a struggle. The absolute best window is Sunday morning, August 30th, with that glassy, long-period groundswell. Monday the 31st is also a solid second choice. Be patient, and you'll get a session.
Rusty.
