The Lowdown

Righto, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.

Alright, so the first bit of the run is a bit of a write-off, to be honest. We’re looking at a solid stretch from Sunday the 30th of August right through to Saturday the 5th of September where the conditions just aren’t lining up for a proper paddle. The wind is a stubborn cross-off from the ENE, blowing a fresh to strong breeze (22-28 mph), and while the swell is there, it’s short-period junk (7-8 seconds) wrapping in from the same ENE direction. That’s a recipe for bumpy, gutless surf. The first real standout doesn’t pop up until Tuesday the 8th of September.

Now, the one true highlight in this whole window is Consessions/Big Rights. It’s an advanced reef break, so it’s not for the faint-hearted. On Tuesday the 8th of September, things get real interesting. The morning session sees a proper pulse of 15 ft swell from the east with a 12-second period, and the wind finally swings around to a light offshore from the NNE at 16 mph. The combined energy is massive (6480), and with that offshore wind, it’s going to be a clean, powerful, and very heavy wave. This is definitely for experts only. The afternoon holds a 12 ft east swell with a 10-second period and a lighter offshore from the north, which is still excellent but a step down in size.

Then, Wednesday the 9th of September is another cracker. The afternoon session goes glassy—zero wind from the ENE—with a solid 10 ft east swell (9-second period). The combined energy is still strong (1555), and with zero wind, it’ll be absolutely perfect. Again, that’s a big wave, so only for the experienced crew.

After that, the swell drops and the wind gets messy again. By the 11th and 12th of September, we’re into smaller, cleaner surf (5 ft to 7 ft) with lighter winds, but it’s nothing compared to that Tuesday-Wednesday window. The water temperature sits at 81°F, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no dramas there.

Look, if you’re keen and you’ve got the skills, circle Tuesday the 8th and Wednesday the 9th of September. That’s your best chance for a real session. The rest of the run is either too windy, too small, or too messy to get excited about.

Rusty.
