Ahoy there, fellow surfer. Rusty here, and I've had a good look at what's coming up for our spot over the next couple of weeks. I've got to be straight with you – the picture ain't pretty for a while. We've got a long stretch of onshore, cross-off winds from the ENE howling at 22 mph that are just gonna tear up whatever swell is trying to show. This reef needs a clean line-up to work its magic, and with that wind, it's just not happening.
Let's start with the outlook. We're looking at a pretty grim run starting right now, on Monday the 6th of July. The swell is there – around 7 ft from the ENE with a short period of 7 seconds, giving us moderate energy (824). But that cross-off wind is making a mess of it, so the surf quality is poor. That same story pretty much hangs around all the way through to Friday the 10th of July. The swell stays between 5 ft and 7 ft, but the energy is moderate and the wind is relentless.
Now, things get a little interesting, if you can call it that, over the weekend of the 12th. On Sunday the 12th of July, the swell direction swings around to the SW with a very long period of 16 seconds. The energy is moderate (408), but the wave height drops right down to 3 ft. That long period groundswell is promising for a reef like this, but the small size and that fresh cross-off breeze are still a problem.
The following week doesn't get much better. It's the same deal: ENE swells in the 5 ft to 7 ft range, short periods of 7 to 8 seconds, and the wind doesn't let up. The energy is moderate, topping out at around 756. We do see a shift in the winds to a moderate breeze by Monday the 20th of July, which is a slight improvement, but the surf is still only scoring a marginal "2" at best.
Right, here’s the bottom line. Looking at the whole 16-day window, there isn't a single standout. It’s just a long, drawn-out period of poor conditions. The best you could hope for is a window on the 21st of July, where the winds drop to 12 mph and the swell is 6 ft from the ENE with a 7-second period and moderate energy (687). Even then, it's only a marginal call. For a surf that gets you fired up, we're waiting. Don't get your hopes up for anything clean until that wind swings around proper. We'll have to be patient.
Rusty.
