The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, switching to imperial for the folks who think that way.

We’re looking at one spot for this whole stretch: Consessions/Big Rights. It’s an advanced reef break, fairly consistent, so it’ll be breaking a fair bit. Water temp is about normal for this time of year.

The best window is Tuesday, 4th August. The morning kicks off with a 5-foot swell from the ENE, with a period of 11 seconds – that’s proper groundswell, giving the waves shape and punch. The wind is a gentle cross-off breeze at 15 km/h, so it’s going to be clean. The combined energy is moderate at 587, and it’s a solid option. The afternoon holds up with similar 5-foot ENE swell, same clean conditions. It’s not huge, but it’s quality. The swell direction is ENE, but the optimum is SSE, so it’s not the perfect angle, but it’s the best we’ve got. Crowds are *sometimes*, so you might share the peak, but it won’t be packed.

Before that Tuesday, there’s a gap. Monday, 3rd August, is a washout – a 5-foot ENE swell with a short 8-second period and 25 km/h cross-off wind makes for marginal, messy waves. So you’re waiting until Tuesday.

After that Tuesday, things drop off. Wednesday, 5th August, goes to 4-foot with a 10-second period, still cross-off but smaller. From Thursday, 6th August, through the first week, it’s tiny 1-foot SSW swell and short-period ENE junk, all with moderate to fresh cross-off winds. The energy drops into the 100-300 range, and the scores are poor. It’s a real lull. Saturday, 8th August, has a brief bump to 5-foot ENE, but with a 7-second period and 30 km/h wind, it’s messy, not worth it.

The second week gets a little more interesting, but still not great. Wednesday, 12th August, brings a 3-foot S swell with a long 18-second period – great for the reef, but small. The combined energy is moderate at 880, but the wind is a fresh 25 km/h cross-off. It’s a long-range call, so less certain. Thursday, 13th August, is similar with 3-foot S swell and 16-second period, same wind problem. The rest of the week into the 16th and 17th sees a return to short-period ENE swell pushing 6-foot to 7-foot, but with 30-40 km/h winds, it’s a complete mess. That 7-foot on Sunday, 16th August, is over 8 feet, so it’s expert-only, and with the wind howling, it’s a no-go.

The stand-out is Tuesday, 4th August, morning. The 5-foot, 11-second groundswell with that gentle cross-off wind is the only clean, quality window in the whole 16-day run. The afternoon is good too, but the morning is the pick.

Other than that, it’s a long dry spell. Plenty of wind for kiting, but for a paddle surfer, you’re living for that Tuesday.

Rusty.
