The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the menu for Lahaina Breakwall/Harbour over the next couple of weeks. The water’s sitting at a warm 80°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year – no surprise there.
Right off the bat, Wednesday July 15 morning brings in a tiny 2‑foot swell from the WNW, with a lovely long period of 15 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, but the combined energy is only 174 – weak stuff. Winds are light cross-off from the east, so it’ll be clean but very ordinary. Honestly, it’s a knee‑high dribbler. The afternoon picks up a bit: same size but from due west, period still 15 seconds, and the energy bumps up to 305. The wind stays light cross-off, and the model actually calls it “expect good surf conditions” – but let’s be real, 2 feet is still small. Still, that afternoon is probably your best window in the near term.
Thursday July 16 morning is similar: 2‑foot west swell, 14‑second period, 288 energy, light ENE cross-off. Again, clean but small. The afternoon drops to 2 feet with offshore NE wind at 6 mph, period 14 seconds, energy 223 – surfable but nothing to write home about.
Friday July 17 through the weekend and into next week, we’ve got a slow decline. Swell sizes hover around 1–2 feet, periods stay long (12–16 seconds), and winds are mostly offshore or cross-off – so the conditions are tidy, but the wave height is just not there. Combined energies drop below 100 on Saturday July 18 (57 and 69) and stay weak. Sunday the 19th is even smaller at 1 foot.
Then from Monday July 20 onward, we get a little pulse of south‑southwest swell, still only 1–2 feet but with longer periods (16–20 seconds) and moderate energies in the 100–220 range. The wind stays light offshore or cross-off, so it’s clean but tiny. The standout in this second stretch is probably Thursday July 23 afternoon: 1‑foot SW swell, 20‑second period, 159 energy, offshore NE at 9 mph – glassy conditions, but again, only ankle‑high.
The best of the whole 16‑day window is that Wednesday July 15 afternoon and Thursday July 16 morning. They’ve got the best score internally, and the wind is light enough to keep it clean. Crowds are “sometimes” an issue, so you might have a few others out. But with waves this small, it’s going to be a longboard or foiling session at best.
If you’re a beginner, nothing here is too big – 2 feet is fine. Experts might get bored. The long periods mean the reef will shape the waves nicely, but the size just isn’t there. Honestly, this is a stretch of very ordinary surf. The good news is the break is consistent, and forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it.
Stay patient, Rusty.
