The Lowdown
Howdy, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s in store for the next couple weeks.
I’ll be upfront – we’ve got a massive quiet spell on our hands. For the next week and a half, it’s almost dead flat. Through Monday the 19th of August, the swell is tiny, barely reaching 2 feet. The wave energy is weak, mostly under 100, with a few afternoons just sneaking into the low hundreds. Even with clean offshore winds from the NE and ENE, you’re fighting for a ride. From now until around the 26th of August, that’s a solid 9-day stretch of nothing worth chasing.
Water temp is sitting around 81°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so at least it’s warm while you’re waiting.
The only real action, and the only time you should be excited, is the final weekend of August. Thursday the 28th of August things start to change. Swell builds from the SSW, hitting 4 feet in the morning, then 4 feet in the afternoon. Wave energy jumps to 370 and then 560 – moderate, but building strong. Winds stay offshore from the ENE and NE, so expect clean conditions.
But the standout, without a doubt, is Friday the 29th of August into Saturday the 30th. This is the best we’ll see. Swell pushes to 5 feet from the SW and WSW, with a period of 12 seconds – proper groundswell. Combined energy hits 777 and 784, that’s strong for this break. Winds are light and offshore from the ENE and NE, so it’s going to be glassy and clean at Lahaina Breakwall/Harbour (Maui). This spot is consistent, but it can get crowded sometimes, so expect company. The swell direction lines up almost perfectly with the optimum WSW, so the reef should fire. This is for intermediate surfers – a bit too big for beginners at 5 feet. Don’t sleep on it.
After that, it drops off fast. By Sunday the 30th of August, it’s back to 3 feet and looking poor, and that’s the end of the window.
Your only window: Friday 29th August morning through Saturday 30th August afternoon. That’s the one. Everything else is a flat, ordinary run.
Rusty.
