The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty with the surf outlook for the next couple of weeks.
It’s a quiet stretch, no doubt. The first few days are a total washout, so don’t rush to wet a line. The real standout is a bit of a wait.
Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are pathetic. The swell is barely 1ft, and the energy is weak. The water temp is about 80°, which is normal for the time of year, so no surprises.
The pattern of small, clean, but underwhelming surf continues. Tuesday the 21st has a little more juice but still only 2ft. Wednesday the 22nd brings a weird, very long-period swell (24 seconds) from the SW, but the height is still only 2ft. That long period makes it weird on the beach, but at a reef break like Lahaina Breakwall/Harbour, it could offer a few more lined-up waves. The wind is offshore from the NE most of the time, keeping things clean, but the size just isn’t there.
The best of the bunch, and the one true standout, is shaping up for Friday the 24th of July. The morning sees a 2ft SW swell with a 17-second period, and the energy jumps. By the afternoon, the swell holds at 2ft but the energy pushes up. The wind stays offshore from the NE (12 mph), so it’ll be clean and lined up on the reef. It’s still small, but for this break, with that direction and wind, it’s the best on offer. Crowds are a possibility here, so get out early.
After that peak, Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th are still rideable, with 2ft SSW swell and moderate energy, but the wind picks up a little and the magic fades. The last week of the run is mostly 2ft with weak energy. There’s a glassy morning on Thursday the 30th, but the swell is too small and poorly aligned.
So, the call is simple: if you’re itching for a paddle, aim for Friday the 24th of July at Lahaina Breakwall/Harbour. It’s not a big day, but it’s the cleanest, most consistent wave in the window. The rest of the time, you’re better off waiting for the next proper swell.
Rusty.
