The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, this isn’t a blockbuster forecast. The swell is small and the energy is low. The standout spot, and really the only consistent option we have, is Lahaina Breakwall/Harbour (Maui). Water temp is sitting at 80°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
The good news is that the wind is looking kind to us. For most of the period, we’ve got clean, offshore breezes, which is a major positive. Starting from Saturday afternoon, the 22nd of August, we’ve got a tiny 1 ft swell rolling in from the SW with a long period of 16 seconds. The combined energy is weak (119), so don’t expect any punch, but the cross-off wind means it’ll be clean if a little gutless. Honestly, conditions are ordinary – just something to get wet on.
Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are similar: 1 ft SW groundswell, clean with offshore winds. The wave energy stays weak, mostly in the 89-129 range. You’ll find surfable waves but it’s nothing to write home about.
Tuesday the 25th through to Thursday the 27th keeps the same vibe – 1 ft to 2 ft, mostly SW or SSW, with periods staying long (14-17 seconds). Winds are offshore or light cross-off, keeping things clean. Energy picks up a little on the Thursday afternoon, hitting 170, but it’s still weak overall. The water will be glassy on Wednesday morning, 2nd September, when the wind drops to zero – that’s a rare treat for this break.
Friday the 28th sees a tiny drop to 1.0 ft and the energy fades again. Saturday the 29th is poor with barely any energy (33), so maybe give it a miss. Sunday the 30th brings back the 1 ft SW swell with a little more life (119-111 energy), and it stays clean.
Into the first week of September, Tuesday the 1st has a 1 ft SW swell with a very long 19-second period. The energy is still weak (94-192), but that long period will make for some drawn-out lines – better for a point or reef setup like this one. Wednesday the 2nd is a standout for wind: glassy conditions in the morning with a 2 ft SSW swell. That’s your best window for silky, clean waves, even if they’re small.
Thursday the 3rd holds similar 2 ft S swell, but by Friday the 4th it drops off hard. Saturday the 5th is poor, and Sunday the 6th brings back a 1 ft SW swell with moderate energy (167). That’s the last half-decent session on offer.
Overall, the best call is Wednesday morning, 2nd September at Lahaina Breakwall. Glassy conditions, 2 ft SSW swell, and the longest period of the run (16 seconds). It won’t be big, but it’ll be clean and cruisy. A close second is Thursday afternoon, 27th August, with the biggest energy (170) and a little more size at 2 ft from the S.
Crowds? This spot is “sometimes” busy, so you might have company. But with the swell this small, it shouldn’t be a zoo. The break is fairly exposed and consistent, so it’s your best bet for a paddle. For beginners, the 1 ft to 2 ft range is perfect – anything over 5 ft would be too much here, and that never shows up.
Because the swell is so small and weak, and the wind is clean, this setup actually looks more interesting for a longboard or a SUP than a shortboard. There’s no real punch, just long, slow lines. If you’re a kiter, you might find more fun elsewhere, but for a paddle surfer, it’s just about getting a few clean rides.
