The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna level with you – this outlook for Lahaina Breakwall/Harbour is a bit of a quiet one. We’ve got a 16-day window staring at us, and for the first few days, there’s just small, weak surf. The real standout, if you can call it that, is going to be the Wednesday afternoon the 15th of July, but even then, it’s not a barnburner. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is about average for this time of year – nothing weird there.
Let’s break it down. Tuesday morning the 14th kicks off with tiny 2ft waves from the SW, a 14-second period, and a light offshore wind from the NE. The energy is weak (146), and the conditions are clean but ordinary. Tuesday afternoon sees a shift to a W swell with a longer 16-second period, and the energy jumps to moderate (280). The wind stays light offshore, so it’s clean, but still only 2ft. It’s surfable, but you won’t be writing home about it.
Wednesday the 15th morning has a 2ft WNW swell, 15-second period, and a very light offshore breeze (5 km/h). Energy is moderate (193). It’s glassy and clean. The standout is Wednesday afternoon: a 2ft W swell, 15-second period, with a cross-offshore breeze from the ENE at 10 km/h. The energy hits 305 – the highest we’ll see for a while – and the conditions are good. If you’re going to paddle out, this is the window. The long period (15 seconds) means the waves will have shape and power, but at a beach setup like this, a long-period swell can sometimes break a bit too straight, so keep that in mind.
Thursday the 16th is similar: 2ft W swells, 14-second period, cross-offshore winds, moderate energy (196 in the morning, 267 in the afternoon). Still clean, still small. Friday the 17th drops to 2ft, with a gentle offshore breeze from the NE. Clean, but fading. Saturday the 18th morning is 1ft with a cross-offshore breeze – energy drops to 126. By Saturday afternoon, the wind picks up to 12 mph, and the swell gets messy from the SSW. The energy bottoms out (103), and honestly, it’s poor.
From Sunday the 19th through the end of the month, it’s a real struggle. Swell heights stay between 1ft and 1ft. The energy is mostly weak, with some moderate spikes but nothing over 185. The wind is offshore or light most of the time, which keeps it clean, but the waves are tiny. There’s a brief bump on Wednesday the 22nd afternoon – a 1ft SW swell with a very long 23-second period and energy of 185 – but it’s still small. The long period might give you a few good lines, but it’s not for beginners.
The rest of the week is flat and ordinary. Crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might see a few locals out, but with this size, it won’t be packed. If you’re a beginner, the swell is under 5ft, so it’s manageable, but there’s just not much to ride. For experts, there’s no power. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for a longboard or a SUP than a shortboard.
Best bet: Wednesday afternoon the 15th of July. It’s the pick of a quiet bunch.
Rusty.
