The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening in the water.
We’re looking at a pretty drawn-out, quiet spell for the foreseeable future. The water temperature is sitting at 80°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The main story is that we’ve got a long run of small, weak surf, with a few moments that are okay but nothing to get too excited about.
The best bet in the whole 16-day window is going to be Thursday morning, July 16, at Lahaina Breakwall/Harbour. Swell is coming from the west at 2ft, with a period of 14 seconds giving it a bit of push. The combined energy is moderate at 288, and with a light offshore breeze from the ENE at 6 mph, it’s going to be clean. This is your standout session. The break is a reef, so it’ll handle that longer period groundswell well, and the WSW optimum direction is a match. Just keep in mind that crowds are sometimes here, so you might have some company.
Thursday afternoon, July 16, drops off a little to 2ft, still clean with the same offshore wind, but the energy dips to 223. It’s surfable, but very ordinary.
Friday, July 17, is similar: morning and afternoon both have 2ft swells from the west and WNW, with light offshore winds. The energy is weak to moderate (178 and 139). It’s clean, but nothing to write home about.
Saturday, July 18, starts with a tiny 1ft wave from the WNW, weak energy at 92, but it’s clean. The afternoon turns worse with a cross-offshore wind at 12 mph and a messier 1ft from the SSW. Poor.
From Sunday, July 19, through to the end of the month, it’s a long stretch of very small surf. Sizes bounce between 0.7ft and 2ft, with the occasional 3ft on Thursday afternoon, July 30, but that’s a short-period windswell at 8 seconds from the NNW. The energy hits 143, but it’s not going to be pretty. Most days have light offshore or gentle offshore winds, but the waves are just too small to get excited about. There’s a gap of several days in there with no real recommendations.
The 24th of July, Friday afternoon, has a 2ft swell from the SSW with a 17-second period, giving moderate energy at 274, and a moderate offshore breeze. It’s clean, and probably the second-best option in the whole run, but still very small.
Honestly, for most of this outlook, it’s a case of waiting for a better swell. If you’re a beginner, the tiny waves are fine, but for anyone else, it’s a real struggle. The setup is a reef, so it’s not interesting for kiting either. Keep your eyes on the forecasts, because it tends not to stay this flat forever.
Rusty.
