The Lowdown
Right then, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it's a pretty quiet stretch ahead. The surf's going to be small, really small, and for the first few days, it's barely worth paddling out for. We're looking at a long run of tiny, weak waves that are more about floating around than getting a proper barrel. The first real chance to get wet isn't until Monday, July 20th.
The standout spot here is Lahaina Breakwall/Harbour. It's a consistent reef break that's fairly exposed, and it loves a swell from the WSW. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing to write home about there.
The first few days, from Saturday, July 18th through to Sunday, July 19th, are a write-off. We're talking ankle-snappers at 1.0 ft to 1 ft with combined swell energy between 14 and 125 (weak to moderate) and the wind is cross-off or offshore. It's clean, but there's just nothing to ride. The period is short to medium, so no punch.
Monday, July 20th marks a slight turn. The swell is still tiny at 1.0 ft to 1 ft, but the energy picks up a bit (105 to 126) and the wind is offshore, keeping it clean. It's still "surfable but very ordinary," but at least you can get a slide. The period is a long 16 seconds, which is a groundswell, but with that size, it's more about the glide than the power. This holds through Tuesday, July 21st, with similar 2 ft, 14-second swell from the south and offshore winds.
Wednesday, July 22nd and Thursday, July 23rd bring a bit more energy, with the combined swell hitting 164 to 187, but the size stays stuck at 1 ft. The period jumps up to a very long 20 to 24 seconds, which is a proper groundswell. That kind of long period at a reef break like Lahaina Breakwall can still produce some clean, lined-up waves, but the size is just so small. The mornings look best with offshore or cross-off winds.
The biggest energy of the whole run shows up on Friday, July 24th and Saturday, July 25th. The combined swell climbs to 263 and 249, which is moderate energy, and the swell sits at 2 ft to 2 ft. The period is still a long 17 to 20 seconds from the SSW. The wind is offshore and clean. This is the best opportunity across the whole 16 days. It's still a small wave, but the energy is there, and the wind is perfect. If you're on a longboard or a fish, Saturday morning, July 25th and Friday afternoon, July 24th are your best bets.
From Sunday, July 26th onwards, the energy slowly starts to fade. The swell stays around 1 ft to 2 ft, but the wind remains offshore through the mornings, so it stays clean. By the end of the month and into August, the combined energy drops back down to weak levels (under 100), and we're back to poor or very ordinary conditions. The very last day in the window, Sunday, August 2nd, sees a little tick up in energy to 133, but still with tiny 1 ft swell.
So, bottom line: it's a quiet, small-wave period. The standout is really just the Friday, July 24th and Saturday, July 25th, when the energy is highest and the wind is clean. For the rest of it, you're looking at a longboard or a summer funboard session at best. The crowds at Lahaina Breakwall can be a problem sometimes, so get there early if you want a wave to yourself.
Rusty.
