The Lowdown
Right, grab your board and let’s have a look at the next couple of weeks, yeah? We’ve got a bit of a slow burner on our hands. The first week or so is looking pretty damn flat, with only tiny, ankle to knee-high dribblers showing up. The energy’s weak, reading between 67 and 138 for most of that time, which is just not worth paddling out for unless you’ve got a foamie and no standards. Winds are mostly offshore and light, so if you do go for a splash, it’ll be clean, but there’s just not enough push.
For the first surf break we’re looking at, Lahaina Breakwall/Harbour (Maui), the water temp is sitting right on average for this time of year at 80°F.
We’re stuck in this pattern through the 22nd and 23rd, with the swell staying around that pathetic 1ft mark. There’s a little bump in the energy on the afternoon of the 21st (137) and the Sunday morning on the 23rd (138), but it’s still nothing to write home about. From the 24th through to the 30th, we finally see the swell start to push up a touch to 1ft to 2ft, with the energy climbing into the low-to-mid 200s by the 26th. Still pretty weak, but it’s a sign of life.
The wind stays mostly offshore, with a bit of a cross-off on the 26th afternoon that’ll chop things up a little. Not the time to get excited.
Now, here’s the one that’s got my attention. The standout on offer is the window around Monday the 31st of August. The swell finally wakes up, jumping to a clean 4ft to 4ft from the SSW, with the energy reading a solid 411 and 433. The period is a nice 12 seconds, too. It’s still an offshore breeze, so it should be clean. This is your window if you’ve been waiting for something with a bit of push. It’s still not huge, but it’s the best the whole run has to offer. This is a promise, but a long-range one, so keep an eye on it.
After that little pulse, it backs off a bit for the first couple of days of September, dropping back to 2ft to 3ft. There’s another little surge on the morning of the 2nd with 3ft and energy at 268, and a similar wave on the afternoon at 3ft with 322 energy. But the afternoon wind swings cross-off, which takes a bit of the shine off it.
So, to break it down: the first 12 days are a grind with weak, knee-high slop. Patience, my friend. Your best bet, and the only real standout of the whole outlook, is that Monday the 31st of August. It’s not a giant, but it’s a real wave with some energy and clean winds. Get on it while it’s there.
Rusty.
