The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin' over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s pretty flat. The first few days are gonna be a struggle. The first surf we can even talk about is on Saturday morning, July 18th, at Lahaina Breakwall/Harbour. We’re looking at a tiny 1 ft of swell out of the WNW, with a very long period of 13 seconds. The combined energy is weak at 125, so it’s not exactly gonna be firing. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is about normal for this time of year. The wind is cross-off from the ENE at 9 mph, which is okay, but honestly, the conditions are just poor. Not worth getting wet for.
Moving into Saturday afternoon, the swell shifts to a tiny 1 ft from the SSW with a 14-second period. The wind goes offshore, giving us a clean surface, but it's still just surfable waves in very ordinary conditions. The energy is still weak (108). Sunday the 19th through to the end of the month is a real struggle. The swell stays small, between 1.0 ft and 2 ft, and the combined energy rarely gets above 200. The wind is offshore for most of it, which is a blessing, but the waves just don't have any grunt.
There is a bit of a pulse around the 24th and 25th of July. On Friday the 24th afternoon, the swell bumps up to 2 ft from the SW with a 17-second period, and the combined energy hits 262 – that’s moderate energy, finally. The wind is a moderate offshore from the NE at 12 mph, so it’ll be clean. That’s probably the best it’s gonna get for a while, but even then, it’s not a standout. The weekend of the 25th and 26th sees similar small SSW swell with offshore winds, but again, it’s just surfable, not special.
As we roll into the first week of August, the trend continues. Small, clean swells with offshore winds, but the energy is low. The morning of August 1st has a bit of energy (153) with a 1 ft SW swell, but it’s nothing to write home about. The afternoon of August 2nd sees a shift to a 1 ft NW swell, still with moderate offshore winds.
Honestly, there’s no standout session in this whole 16-day window. The best you’re going to get is a small, clean wave with a bit of period on the 24th and 25th. The crowds are listed as "sometimes" at Lahaina Breakwall, so you might have a few others out there scratching for the same crumbs. For a beginner, these tiny waves are perfect, but for anyone else, it’s a long wait for not much reward. The whole run looks like a blank stretch. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it, but right now, I’d be finding something else to do.
Rusty.
