The Lowdown
Alright, listen up, crew. The next stretch is looking pretty flat and ordinary. We've got a whole lot of small, weak swell on the menu, so don't get your hopes up for anything too exciting. The one spot that's got a pulse is Lahaina Breakwall/Harbour, and it's all about the long-period, groundswell energy from the southwest. The water is sitting at a comfortable 80°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The week kicks off on Wednesday, 19 August, with some clouds and a tiny 1 ft SW swell. The combined energy is a weak 66, so it's a real struggle. Things pick up a tiny bit on Thursday, the 20th, with a cleaner 1 ft, but still nothing to write home about. The real highlight of this whole period, and I mean the only real highlight, is Friday morning, the 21st of August. We've got a 1 ft SW swell with a period of 17 seconds, which is a long-period groundswell. The wind is glassy out of the east at 3 mph, and the combined energy jumps to 134 (moderate). It's going to be clean, glassy, and the best you'll see for a while. That's your window. It's a reef break, so that long period stuff will be working well. After that morning, it's back to the same old story.
The following week through the end of August and into September is a long, drawn-out affair of 1 ft to 1 ft swell. The wind is usually offshore or cross-off, keeping it clean, but the energy is weak, and the surf is just plain ordinary. There’s a stretch from the 29th of August all the way through to the 1st of September where conditions are just poor. You'll be scratching for anything. The south-west swell direction is a good match for the break, but it just doesn't have the guts. Crowds are sometimes a factor at the Breakwall, but with this kind of surf, you'll probably have it to yourself.
So, bottom line: if you're desperate for a paddle and can't stand being dry, aim for Friday morning, the 21st of August. It's your best bet. Otherwise, you might be better off saving your energy.
