The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a long, hard look at what’s cookin’ for Kihei Cove.

Right off the bat, we’ve got a reef break that’s very consistent, which is a good sign for a place that’s fairly exposed. The water is sitting at 80°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year – nothing weird going on there. The main thing to know is that the first few days are going to be small, real small. We’re talkin’ ankle-to-knee high stuff, not much to get excited about. The real standout window is further out, but we’ll get to that.

The period kicks off Wednesday, August 19th with a tiny 1 ft SSW swell, but we’ve got a nice cross-off wind from the NNW. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. The combined energy is weak at 172, so you’re not gonna feel much push. Thursday, August 20th, the swell nudges up ever so slightly to 2 ft, and the morning is glassy. That’s about as good as it gets for the conditions, but the waves are still small. Friday, August 21st, the morning wind is onshore, so it’s a bit messy. The afternoon cleans up with glassy conditions, but again, it’s small.

We hit a bit of a rough patch on Saturday, August 22nd morning. The surf is poor – a cross-shore wind with small ripples. Not worth paddling out. The afternoon does clean up with a gentle offshore from the NE, but it’s still only 2 ft. Sunday, August 23rd, is much the same: clean but tiny.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. From Monday, August 24th, through the end of the month, we see a gradual increase in energy. The morning of the 24th is glassy with 2 ft from the SSW, and the combined energy is climbing to 224. It’s still small, but it’s getting better. The real standout for the whole outlook is Thursday, August 27th. The morning brings a 3 ft swell from the south, with a long period of 16 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a solid 546, which is moderate, and it’s glassy. That’s a clean, groundswell for the reef. The afternoon is also clean with a light offshore breeze. This is the best on offer – a true standout for the whole 16 days.

After that, the energy drops off again. The rest of the month and into early September, we’re back to small, ankle-high waves with energy numbers falling back to the 100s and lower. The 1st and 2nd of September are pretty ordinary, and the 3rd of September has a bit of rain with a tiny 1 ft that’s glassy but not much else.

So, if you’re looking for a wave, the best bet is to hold out for the morning of Thursday, August 27th at Kihei Cove. The swell direction is S, coming right in for the reef, and the period is long enough to have some shape. It’s a beginner spot, so this size is perfect. The rest of the time, it’s mostly small and clean, but that one morning is the real standout.

Rusty.
