The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about the stretch ahead for Kihei Cove.
We've got a bit of a slow start to this outlook, with a few days of small, pretty ordinary surf. But don’t sleep on it, because things are set to wake up nicely later in the window. Keep it in the back of your mind, it’s going to be worth the wait. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing to worry about there.
The first few days, from Monday the 17th through Friday the 21st, are all about ankle to waist-high waves. We're looking at surf around 2 ft to 3 ft, mostly from the south. The winds are mostly light or glassy, which is good, but there's just not a lot of push. It’s the kind of surf that’s fine for a log or a foamie, but it’s not going to get your heart racing. The energy is weak on these days, with combined swell energy ranging from 136 to 405. Still, we've had a lot of these clean, glassy mornings, and you can’t complain about that.
The weekend rolls in with more of the same, with surf remaining small on Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd. We’re not seeing much change, just more in the 2 ft to 2 ft range. The swell direction shifts slightly to the SSW, and we get some more glassy spells, but the size just isn’t there.
So from the 17th to the 25th, we're looking at a solid stretch of nothing over knee-high. It's a gap of about nine days where there’s really nothing exciting on offer, just small, workable waves if you’re desperate to get wet. Then, around Monday the 25th, we start to see a pulse in the energy, with the combined swell energy climbing to 268, although wave heights are still small.
Now, here’s the standout. The real action is coming in on Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th. This is where things get interesting. We see a solid bump in swell, with heights jumping up to 5 ft to 5 ft from the south, and the combined energy jumps up into the 600 to 735 range, which is a solid, moderate push of energy. The period is around 12 to 13 seconds, a solid groundswell that will have some shape to it.
Wednesday the 26th looks like the pick of the bunch. Morning brings some clouds with a slight air, making for a glassy surface. The swell will be pushing 5 ft from the south, and with that light wind, Kihei Cove (Maui) is going to be clean and lined up. There’s a real chance for some fun, rippable waves. It’s not huge, so it’s still fine for a confident beginner, but the quality should be there. Thursday the 27th is a very close second, with morning glass again and swell at 5 ft. This is the most size we see, but it might be a touch more closed-out at the reef. Keep an eye on it.
After that little pulse, things back off again. From Friday the 28th right through to the end of the outlook on Tuesday the 1st of September, we’re back to small, waist-high or less surf. The energy drops right back down to the 100s and 200s. There are still some glassy mornings, and the winds stay light, but it's back to the small stuff.
So, overall, it’s a slow start, a long flat-ish period, then a couple of standout days on the 26th and 27th that look promising. It’s further out, so treat it as a promising but not locked-in call. But if you can, keep those days free.
Rusty.
