The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Kihei Cove.
We’ve got a super consistent little reef break that’s going to be the only game in town for the next couple of weeks. Don’t expect any fireworks; this is a beginner-friendly spot that’s going to stay small and mellow. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The first few days are pretty ordinary. Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th have small 2ft to 2ft southerly swell, with a moderate energy reading (around 136 to 212). The wind is light and offshore or glassy, so it’ll be clean, but the waves are just too weak to get excited about. Thursday the 20th stays the same story: tiny 2ft swell (SSW), a long period of 17-18 seconds, and glassy conditions. The energy is moderate (231-239), but the size is just not there.
Now, Friday the 21st is the first little standout. We’ve got a 2ft swell from the SW, with a long period of 16 seconds, and the energy has bumped up to a moderate 274. The morning is glassy, and the forecast is calling for “good surf conditions.” This is the best of the first week. The swell direction is a good match for the break, and those clean morning conditions will make it feel like more fun than the numbers suggest.
The weekend and into the next week is very similar. Saturday the 22nd through Monday the 24th has 2ft to 2ft SSW swell, with moderate energy between 192 and 228. Winds are light and offshore or glassy, so it’s clean, but small. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.
The real highlight of the whole outlook comes on Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th. The swell bumps up to 2ft to 3ft from the S, with a solid period of 16-17 seconds. The energy jumps to a strong 336-380, and the forecast again says “good surf conditions.” The wind is light offshore and glassy in the mornings. This is the best run of the forecast: clean, punchy little waves for a reef break. It’s still small, so it’s perfect for beginners, and the long period means the shape should be better than usual.
After that, we drop back into ordinary territory. Friday the 28th through Sunday the 30th has 2ft to 2ft S swell, with energy fading from 263 down to 71. Monday the 31st has a 3ft SW swell, but the period drops to 8-9 seconds, which is pretty weak and short. By Tuesday the 1st of September, the swell is tiny (1ft) and the energy is low (53-102), so it’s basically flat.
Overall, this is a consistent but small stretch. The best bet is the morning of Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th, when the energy is highest and the wind is glassy. It’s a beginner’s dream, but if you’re looking for any size, you’ll be waiting a long time.
Rusty.
