The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk shop.
We’ve got a pretty sweet run coming up for Kihei Cove. This is a beginner-friendly reef break, and it’s very consistent, so it’ll be offering waves more often than not. The water is sitting at a warm 81°, which is pretty standard for this time of year.
Right out of the gate, Sunday morning the 23rd brings clean, waist-high swell from the SSW. It’s got moderate energy pushed in here (218), but it’s only 2ft and a long 15-second period. That long period means it’ll be a bit more lined up than usual for a beach setup, but it’s clean with a light offshore breeze, so you’ll get some fun, easy ones. The afternoon sees the wind pick up and go cross-offshore, making it a bit bumpy – better to call it a morning session.
Monday morning the 24th is the real standout early on. Glassy conditions, no wind at all, and a 2ft SSW swell (244 energy). That’s the kind of morning you want to be sitting out there, no crowds yet, just smooth shoulder-high waves. The afternoon brings a risk of thunderstorms and a light cross-shore, so I’d be off the water by then.
Tuesday the 25th is another good one for the early crew. Light offshore breeze, 2ft but with a clean 16-second period (290 energy). It’s not big, but it’s clean and consistent. Wednesday the 26th steps it up a notch, with the energy climbing to 454 on Wednesday morning and then a nice 2ft with a 17-second period and gentle offshore wind in the afternoon (551 energy). That afternoon session is going to be really clean.
Thursday the 27th morning is the first real high point. Clear skies, light offshore wind, and a 3ft SSW swell with a massive energy reading of 932. That’s a lot of juice for a small wave, meaning it’s going to be punchy and well-shaped for the size. This is the best of the first week. The afternoon drops back a bit with a shift to a south swell and moderate wind.
The run of good morning offshores continues through Friday and into Saturday, but swell starts to back off a little. By Saturday the 29th, it’s back to 2ft, still clean but more ordinary. There’s a bit of a lull over the next few days, with small, mostly surfable but not exciting waves.
Now, looking into the second week, there’s something promising. Tuesday morning, September 1st, we get a jump back up to a clean 3ft swell from the south, 18-second period, and offshore wind (698 energy). That’s a solid, clean wave for a reef, and it’s the best of that week’s forecast. Wednesday the 2nd is also worth a mention: glassy conditions, 3ft, same S swell with even higher energy (801). That morning looks absolutely perfect.
The following days hold up around 3-3ft with offshore winds, so the consistency is there, but nothing is going to blow you away after that Wednesday glass-off. The very end of the run, Monday the 7th, shows a glassy 3ft SSW swell return in the afternoon, so it finishes strong.
Overall, the best bets are Thursday morning, August 27th and Wednesday morning, September 2nd. Those are the two standout windows for clean, punchy, well-shaped waves. Crowds are a possibility at Kihei Cove, so get there early for the clean morning glass-offs.
