The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the Kihei Cove area.
Right off the bat, we're looking at a pretty drawn-out stretch of small, but promising surf. The next few days are going to be for the patient surfer, with just small waves rolling in. But stick with it, because the back half of the outlook is where we score.
Starting from Wednesday the 19th, the swell is tiny, around 1ft to 2ft. It's a long-period groundswell from the SSW and S, which is a good sign for this reef setup, but the size isn't there yet. The wave energy is weak, reading between 136 and 172. It's clean but really ordinary.
Thursday the 20th is a bit of a mixed bag. The morning is cross-shore, but you've got that Thursday afternoon window looking glassy. The swell holds at 2ft from the SSW, with a moderate energy reading of 223. That's a better window if you're desperate for a slide.
Friday the 21st through to Monday the 24th are the typical summer slop. We're seeing the swell bounce around between 2ft and 2ft, but the quality dips. There's a few clean windows, like Friday afternoon and Saturday morning when it turns glassy or offshore, but the energy is weak and inconsistent.
Now, here’s the light. Tuesday the 25th is when things start looking up. We’ve got a proper window of good surf conditions. The morning is dead calm and glassy, with 2ft of 16-second SSW groundswell and the energy reading climbs to 277. The afternoon holds clean offshore winds too. That’s a proper sneaky-good session for a log or a mid-length.
And then, hold onto your boards for Wednesday the 26th and especially Thursday the 27th. The combined swell energy jumps to a moderate 459 on Wednesday and a strong 639 on Thursday. That’s serious power for Kihei Cove. The swell is coming from the South at 4ft on Thursday morning with a 16-second period. This is prime for this break. The winds are light cross-off, the water is around average for the time of year, and the wave quality is expected to be good. The swell direction is coming from the S, which is very close to the optimum WSW, so it’ll wrap in nicely. This Thursday the 27th morning window is the absolute standout of the whole outlook. It won’t be too big for anyone, but it’ll have proper shape and push.
After that peak, we settle into a long run of smaller, clean surf through to the 3rd of September. The first of September has another good pulse, with 2ft to 2ft of 19-second S groundswell, clean and glassy or offshore. The energy readings are solid, in the 330 to 350 range. Just be aware that by Tuesday the 3rd, the winds are going to be strong offshore, which will make it clean but textured.
Overall, the first week is for the glass-half-full crew, but the end of August and the start of September have some real magic potential, especially that Thursday the 27th.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
