The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break this down in feet and knots for you.
We’ve got a solid two-week window ahead, but it’s not a straight-up bombshell – it builds slowly, so patience is the name of the game.
We’re starting small, real small. The first surf to speak of kicks off on Thursday the 20th of August. The waves are tiny, only around 2ft from the SSW, but the wind is glass at Kihei Cove. It’s a beginner-friendly reef break that’s very consistent, though crowds are often a thing here. The water’s sitting at a warm 80°, which is pretty much average for this time of year. The combined energy is weak (223), so you’re looking at small, gentle lines. Honestly, it’s surfable but very ordinary.
Friday the 21st through the weekend is more of the same – small swell, period hanging around 15-16 seconds, which is a nice long groundswell. The wind stays favorable with offshore and glassy conditions on Saturday morning and Sunday morning. Wave size hovers around 2ft to 2ft. It’s not going to blow your mind, but for a longboard or a foiler, it’s clean and fun. There’s a shower passing through Sunday afternoon, but the wind is still offshore.
Then we hit the middle of the week – and this is where it starts to get interesting. Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th see the energy jump. The combined energy climbs to 296 and then 551, and the swell ticks up to 2ft from the SSW. The real standout? Wednesday the 26th afternoon. The swell is still a modest 2ft, but the period is a juicy 17 seconds, and we’ve got a moderate offshore breeze (12 mph) from the NNE. That’s clean, lined-up waves on a reef break. The energy is moderate (551), and the quality is looking good. This is your best bet for the first week.
But the true highlight of the whole forecast lands on Thursday the 27th of August. Thursday morning is the pick. The swell pushes to 3ft from the SSW, with a 16-second period, and the wind is a light offshore breeze from the NNE. The combined energy hits 720 – that’s moderate but punching well above the wave height. This will be clean, consistent, and have some real push to it. For Kihei Cove, this is as good as it gets in this window. Get on it.
Friday the 28th and into the weekend it tapers off. The energy drops, and while the wind stays mostly offshore, the swell fades to 1ft-2ft by Saturday. Sunday the 30th is small and clean, but nothing special.
The first few days of September look promising again. Wednesday the 2nd of September gives us another solid day: 3ft from the S, 17-second period, glassy in the morning and offshore in the afternoon. The energy is back up to 415. That’s another notable session.
Overall, the run from Thursday the 20th through to Wednesday the 2nd of September has a few standout windows. The best on offer? Thursday the 27th of August morning is the one to circle. Wednesday the 26th afternoon and Wednesday the 2nd of September morning are solid runners-up. The rest is small but clean – good for a longboard cruise, but not a paddle-out you’ll remember forever.
This is Rusty, signing off.
