The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it.
First up, the story for the next couple of weeks is pretty straightforward. We’ve got a solid run of clean, small waves at Kihei Cove. It’s not going to be blowing anyone’s mind, but for a beginner-friendly reef break, there are some nice windows to get a few longboard rides and just enjoy being out there. The water is sitting at 80°, which is pretty much exactly what you’d expect for this time of year. Nothing weird going on there.
We kick things off on Monday the 17th with a bit of a cross-off breeze and a clean 3ft of south swell. It’s surfable, but ordinary. The energy is weak, only 257, so it’s a bit soft. Tuesday the 18th is where it starts to get interesting. The morning is glassy with a 2ft south swell, and while the energy is still weak at 197, the lack of wind makes it super inviting for a paddle. The afternoon even picks up a light offshore breeze from the NE, cleaning it up further.
Wednesday and Thursday are more of the same – small and glassy. Friday the 21st has a fun pulse of 2ft southwest swell, but there’s a risk of thunderstorms in the afternoon. The weekend sees the swell back down to 2-2ft, but the conditions stay clean and glassy for most of it. It’s all pretty consistent for what this spot is.
Now, the real standout starts to build next week. From Monday the 24th through Wednesday the 26th, we have a solid stretch of offshore winds. The swell is still small, 2ft to 2ft, but the energy starts climbing. By Wednesday the 26th, that energy meter jumps to 400, which is a solid step up from the weak readings earlier. Thursday the 27th is looking like the pick of the bunch for the first week. We’ve got a 3ft south swell with a 17-second period rolling in, energy at 463, and a light offshore breeze. That’s a step up in quality and power, making it the best session of the week, hands down.
The first couple of days of the second week, Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th, keep the small, clean theme going. Then, Sunday the 30th throws a bit of a curveball. That south swell pushes up to 5ft, which is the biggest of the whole forecast, but the period drops right off to 9 seconds. That’s a lot of short-period energy. It might be a bit lumpy and closing out for the loggers. There is a window in the morning with calm winds and a glassy surface, but it’s likely a bit much for the beginners this spot usually attracts. That 5ft is right on the edge.
After that, it fades right back down to 2ft for the start of September. The last day of the forecast, Tuesday the 1st, sees the wind pick up out of the NNE at 15 mph with the energy dropping to a weak 82. It’s a poor note to end on, but with how consistent the rest of the run has been, you’re not missing much on that final day.
Overall, there’s a long, clean, and mostly small window of surf here. Don’t expect anything epic, but the consistency is great for a beginner spot. The standout is Thursday the 27th, when the energy, period, and wind all align for some proper little waves. It’s a promising long-range call, but the near-term stuff in the first few days is the most reliable.
Rusty out.
