The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's coming up in the water.
We're looking at Kihei Cove for the next couple of weeks. It's a reef break, so it'll handle the swell better than a beach break. The water’s sitting at 79°, which is bang on average for this time of year—no thermal wetsuit needed.
The forecast kicks off with a bit of a flat spell. Thursday and Friday (16th and 17th) are looking pretty weak with waves around 2ft. The wind is a bit wonky on Thursday morning, onshore and light, so it'll be a bit bumpy. Friday afternoon cleans up nicely with a light offshore breeze from the ENE, but the swell is still tiny. It's more of a longboard or beginner session, and Kihei Cove is rated for beginners anyway, so that suits. The energy is moderate, around 287 to 335 (combined swell energy).
Saturday (18th) and Sunday (19th) are a similar story. The swell drops a touch more, down to 1ft-2ft. Saturday morning is glassy, which is a treat, but the waves are just too small to get excited about. The energy is dipping into the low 200s. This is a real lull.
Then we get a proper window. From Monday (20th) through to Wednesday (23rd), things start to look promising. The swell picks up to 3ft-3ft on Monday and Tuesday (20th-21st), coming from the S with a 14-second period. That's a nice, clean groundswell. The mornings are glassy—calm as a lake—and the afternoons have a light offshore from the ENE. This is the best run of the whole forecast. The energy is moderate to strong, hitting 495 on Monday and 468 on Tuesday. These are the standout days for the whole period. The wave comment says "expect good surf conditions," and with the glassy mornings, it’s going to be clean and fun. Crowds are often here, so be ready to share the peak.
Wednesday (22nd) gets interesting. The swell drops a bit to 2ft from the SSW, but the period jumps to 24 seconds. That’s a very long-period groundswell. At a reef break like Kihei Cove, that can mean super clean, lined-up waves, but it can also be a bit tricky with the long lulls between sets. The energy is strong at 566 to 632. It's a quality option, but you need to be patient.
The tail end of the first week and into the second week (Thursday 23rd to Sunday 26th) is where the real power shows up. Thursday (23rd) has 3ft SSW swell with a 20-second period and moderate offshore winds. The energy jumps to 718. The wave comment says "very good surf conditions." This is a top pick. Friday (24th) is similar, and the afternoon energy spikes to 1008. Saturday (25th) sees 3ft-4ft SSW swell, strong energy (1063), and good offshore winds. That’s a solid notch up. For a beginner-friendly spot, 3ft is getting to the upper limit of comfortable, but it's still very manageable. Sunday (26th) is a bit windier, still clean but with a cross-off breeze, and the wave comment drops to "poor." The size is still there, but the quality fades.
The final stretch from Monday (27th) to Wednesday (30th) shows a decline. The swell stays around 3ft-3ft, but the energy drops, and the wind gets a bit more mixed. Late on the 29th and 30th, we're back to tiny 1ft-2ft SSW swell and very low energy, with glassy conditions but no push. The last day, 31st July, is a flat glassy morning with a tiny 2ft groundswell.
So, the standouts are clear: Monday (20th) and Tuesday (21st) for the glassy mornings and clean, fun 3ft S swell, and Thursday (23rd) morning for the 3ft SSW groundswell with light offshore winds and very strong energy. If you want the biggest, cleanest swell of the whole window, Saturday (25th) morning with 4ft and 1063 energy is the top pick, but it's a bit more powerful.
Rusty.
