Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s get into it. The outlook for Kihei Cove is a steady, drawn-out run of small but clean surf, mostly for the learner crew or anyone happy on a longboard. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing weird going on there.
We’ve got a nice, long period groundswell arriving Sunday afternoon (July 5th) from the SSW, around 3ft with a 17-second period. That long period means the waves will have plenty of push for the size, but it can make things a little straight at a beach setup – Kihei Cove is a reef break though, so it should handle that nicely. The wind is light offshore from the NNE at 12 mph, keeping the surface glassy and clean. The combined swell energy is moderate at 603. This first session is the standout of the whole window – it’s consistent, clean, and small enough for beginners but still fun for everyone.
Monday morning (July 6th) holds similar 3ft SSW swell with a 16-second period and offshore breezes, still very surfable. The energy drops a little (453) but it’s still a good, clean option. Monday afternoon sees the wind pick up to 16 mph, making it a bit bumpier, so aim for the early session.
Tuesday (July 7th) through Thursday morning (July 9th) sees the swell slowly backing off from 3ft down to 2ft. Winds stay mostly offshore or glassy, so conditions remain clean even as the power fades. Thursday morning (July 9th) is a highlight within this lull – glassy calm, 2ft from the south, period dropping to 13 seconds. Not a classic, but clean.
Friday (July 10th) is the smallest day, with 2ft waves and occasional glass, but the energy is weak (148). Still, for a beginner or someone just wanting to float around, it’s fine.
Then things perk up again Saturday morning (July 11th). Swell direction swings to the SW, height still only 2ft but the period jumps back to 18 seconds – that’s a long, clean groundswell. Light offshore breeze from the ENE, clean conditions. The energy (270) is modest, but the quality will be there for a patient surfer. This is the second standout window, especially for anyone who likes a slow, peeling wave.
Sunday morning (July 12th) holds 2ft SW swell with 16-second period and moderate offshore winds. Crowds are “often” an issue here, so expect company. The swell energy is moderate (320), so it’s a solid session.
Monday (July 13th) is a bit mixed – morning has cross-offshore wind, so not as clean, but the afternoon picks up again with 2ft and offshore breeze. Tuesday morning (July 14th) is a real gem: glassy, 2ft from the SW, long 14-second period, and the energy jumps to 515 – that’s a good pulse of energy for such a small wave. This is another standout.
Wednesday (July 15th) through Saturday (July 18th) the swell size stays in the 2ft to 2ft range, with periods dropping a little. Winds are mostly light offshore or glassy, so you can surf any of these days, but nothing will blow you away. The energy fluctuates between 200 and 563, with Wednesday morning (July 15th) having the most push (563) from a W swell, 16-second period, and glassy conditions – that’s a sneaky good session.
The last few days, from July 19th to July 20th, the swell fades to 1ft to 2ft, energy dips below 200, and it’s really just small, weak surf. You could still paddle out if you’re desperate, but it’s not worth rushing for.
Best bets: Sunday July 5th afternoon for the opening act, and Tuesday July 14th morning for the glassy, punchy little waves. If you’re a beginner, any of the morning sessions from July 6th to July 12th will treat you right.
Stay stoked.
