Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the Kihei Cove area over the next couple of weeks. It's a bit of a slow burn to start, so don't expect to be charging out of the gates.
Alright, so we're looking at a long run of small but persistent surf. The first good window kicks off Friday the 3rd of July, with a nice little 2ft SSW groundswell pushing in. The water's sitting at a comfortable 80°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The big winner early on is the wind – we've got a gentle offshore breeze all through Friday afternoon, setting up clean, peeling lines over the reef. The combined energy reading is a modest 374, so not a whole lot of grunt, but for a beginner-friendly reef like Kihei Cove, this is perfect. Just be aware, this spot is very consistent, but crowds are often here, so expect company.
Moving into the weekend, it gets even better. Saturday the 4th of July sees the swell bumping up just a touch to 3ft, still from the SSW, but the period jumps to 20 seconds. That's a proper long-period groundswell, meaning the waves will have real shape and punch for the size. The energy reading climbs to 695, and with a moderate offshore breeze, it's going to be rippable all day. The standout of the whole outlook is Saturday afternoon – the forecast says "very good surf conditions" and I can't argue with that. The swell holds at 3ft with a 20-second period and the wind is clean. That's the pick of the bunch.
Sunday the 5th is more of the same goodness, just a touch smaller. We get a light offshore breeze in the morning, dropping to 6 mph, with a 3ft SSW swell and an 18-second period. The early session is going to be glassy and sweet. Later in the day the breeze picks up to a moderate 12 mph, but it's still offshore, so it'll stay clean.
The first week trundles along steadily with similar conditions – morning glass-offs and consistent offshore breezes. By Monday the 6th, we're still seeing 3ft SSW swell with a 16-second period and moderate offshore wind. The energy is still solid, sitting around 453. For a spot that's "fairly exposed" to this swell direction and hits its optimum from WSW, this SSW action is working a treat.
As we roll into the second week, the swell dips a bit but hangs tough. Around Thursday the 9th, we drop to 2ft and the period shortens to 12 seconds. Not terrible, but you'll be working for your waves. The wind goes glassy in the morning, which is a treat, but the energy has dropped to 134 – pretty weak.
There's a glimmer on Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th. The swell bumps back up to 2ft with a 16-second period, and the wind stays offshore, even with some rain showers around. The energy picks up to 348, so it's worth a paddle if you're keen for a session that's not too demanding.
The real late show comes on Monday the 13th. We get a 3ft SW swell with a 16-second period, and the energy jumps to 514. The wind is light and cross-off, so it'll be clean. Then Tuesday the 14th serves up another highlight, with a 2ft W swell and a 16-second period. The wind goes glassy in the morning, and the energy comes in at a punchy 549. That's a good session for anyone who likes a longer wall to work with.
From the 16th onward, things taper off. We get some glassy mornings, but the swell drops back to 2-2ft and the energy fades. It's still surfable, but nothing to write home about. The last couple of days, Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th, are small and ordinary – the wind stays okay, but the swell is struggling.
Overall, don't sleep on Saturday the 4th of July. That afternoon session with the 3ft, 20-second groundswell and clean offshore wind is the absolute standout. If you can only paddle out once, that's the call. Monday the 13th morning is a close second for a bit more size.
Stay frothy,
Rusty
