The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a long run of small but clean waves coming our way. The water is sitting at 79°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there. The focus is all on Kihei Cove, a reef break that’s very consistent and beginner-friendly, but it’s also often crowded, so expect company.
The outlook kicks off on Tuesday afternoon, July 14th, with 2ft of west swell, a 16-second period, and a cross-off breeze from the NNE. The energy is moderate (382), and the water is glassy clean. It’s small, but it’s a fun little wave.
Wednesday the 15th is a standout. The morning is glassy with a 2ft west swell and a 15-second period, combined energy jumping to 565. The wind is almost nothing from the WSW, making for perfect, clean conditions. That’s the pick of the first week. The afternoon holds up with offshore winds, too.
Thursday the 16th keeps the glassy theme going, with 2ft swell from the west and then shifting to the SSW. The energy is still solid (494 and 453). Very clean.
Friday the 17th starts glassy again with 2ft west swell, then swings to a clean offshore in the afternoon. By Saturday the 18th, the conditions get a bit borderline with cross-shore ripples, but the swell holds.
Sunday the 19th is a bit ordinary, with smaller 1ft to 2ft swell, but it stays clean. Then Monday the 20th is a real highlight. We see 3ft of south swell, a 16-second period, and glassy conditions in the morning with energy at 505. The afternoon stays clean with offshore winds. This is a top pick for the week.
Tuesday the 21st pushes up to 3ft of south swell, 14-second period, and glassy calm in the morning – that’s a beautiful window for a longboard or a funboard. The surf is set to stay clean through the rest of the week.
Now, into the second week, it gets interesting. On Wednesday the 22nd, the period jumps to 24 seconds – that’s a very long period groundswell – with 2ft of south swell. The energy is high (615), but remember, that long period can make a beach break close out straight. Here at Kihei Cove, it’s a reef, so it should handle it well. The winds are clean offshore.
Thursday the 23rd, Friday the 24th, and Saturday the 25th all keep the 2ft to 3ft south-southwest swell rolling with periods in the 16 to 20-second range. Energy stays strong (500-634). Clean offshore winds are consistent. This is a great, sustained run of small, groomed waves.
Sunday the 26th is another solid day with 3ft SSW swell, 17-second period, and clean cross-off winds. Energy is 526.
Monday the 27th starts a bit messy with onshore wind, but the afternoon turns glassy again with 3ft SSW swell. The energy drops, but it’s rideable.
The last two days, Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th, get a bit more ordinary. The swell drops to 2ft-2ft, the period shortens, and the energy fades to 125-241. The winds are offshore but moderate, so it’s still clean, just small.
Best on offer: Wednesday morning July 15th for the glassy perfection, and Monday morning July 20th for the bump in size and clean conditions. The whole run from July 20th to 26th is a long, consistent spell of clean, small waves.
Rusty.
