The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. We got a long, slow, drawn-out run of small waves for Kihei Cove. It’s a classic summer pattern, so don’t hold your breath for anything massive.
Things kick off Friday the 21st through the weekend with tiny surf, only about 2ft to 2ft. That’s fine for a beginner reef like Kihei Cove, which is usually pretty reliable. The water’s a normal 80°, so no surprises there. You’ll get some cross-on breeze Friday morning, but it glassies up in the afternoon, and Saturday’s glassy too, with a little offshore wind Sunday. The wave energy is weak, sitting around 174 to 292, so it’s not doing much, but for a longboard or a learner, there’s something to ride.
Early next week, Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th, the swell stays small, still 2ft to 2ft, but the wind gets sweet. Glassy conditions Monday morning, and by Tuesday afternoon you’ve got a clean, gentle offshore out of the ENE at 9 mph. The energy is still moderate at best (around 290 to 296), but quality jumps up. The real standout of the whole forecast is Wednesday the 26th. The morning’s clean with a 2ft SSW swell at 14 seconds, but the afternoon’s the one to mark. You get a 2ft SSW groundswell with a 17-second period, a nice light offshore NNE breeze at 9 mph, and the combined wave energy hits a solid 551. That’s moderate energy with clean conditions, and that long-period swell will wrap right into this reef.
Then, Thursday the 27th morning tops it off with the biggest swell we’ll see, hitting 3ft from the SSW with a 16-second period. The energy climbs to 836, which is the highest of the run, and it’s still holding that clean offshore wind. Even at that size, it’s fine for intermediates, and for anyone who loves lined-up, clean waves, it’s a treat. After that, we fade. Friday the 28th into the weekend gets windier with a moderate offshore, and the swell drops back to 2ft to 2ft. The energy falls off, and by early September it gets a little messy. A fresh offshore breeze on Tuesday the 1st of September is blowing 22 to 25 mph, which is more for kite surfing than paddling. Wednesday the 2nd has a funky onshore wind, but it glassies up again by afternoon. The very end, around Saturday the 5th, shows a tiny but glassy 1ft SSW swell with a very long 20-second period, which is interesting, but it’s low energy.
So, bring your foamie or your longboard. Wednesday the 26th afternoon and Thursday the 27th morning are your best shots. Nothing huge, but plenty of clean, fun, small waves to get your feet wet.
Rusty.
