The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get into what we've got for Kihei Cove over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – don't expect any fireworks this week. The first good look at the waves doesn't even come until Monday the 17th. Sunday the 16th is a write-off with onshore winds and a messy little 6ft south swell that's just too short period at 8 seconds. Combined wave energy is a moderate 772, but it's not gonna do us any favors with that cross-on breeze. Just sit this one out.
Monday the 17th is where we finally get a window. It's not big, but that's the point. We've got a clean 3ft south swell with a nice long 14-second period, and the wind is offshore from the NNE. Gentle offshore and clean – that's what we want. That long period will make the paddle out easier, and at this reef break, the longer gaps between sets will be your friend. The combined energy sits at 393 (moderate), and it's a solid beginner-friendly setup. Tuesday the 18th is pretty similar but smaller, with 2ft south swell and glassy conditions in the morning. Not a standout, but a fun little session if you're keen.
The rest of the first week and into the second is pretty ordinary. Tiny waves, mostly under 2ft, with the odd bit of clean or glassy wind. Thursday the 20th has a hint of a longer period SSW swell at 2ft with 18-second intervals, but the combined energy is only 231. It's surfable, but don't expect much push. You'll be scratching for little runners.
Now, here's where I get a little excited. Look ahead to Wednesday the 26th of August. We've got a south swell coming in at 2ft but with a super long 18-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 455. That's a proper groundswell. The wind is offshore and clean all day. For a reef like Kihei Cove, that long period will wrap in nicely and give you some surprisingly fun, lined-up waves. It's still small, but the quality will be head and shoulders above everything else in this forecast. That Wednesday morning session is *the* standout. Thursday the 27th is also promising with a 3ft SSW swell and offshore wind, but that Wednesday setup has my heart.
The last few days of August and into the 31st remain small – 2ft to 3ft – but with persistent offshore winds and clean conditions. Not world-class, but the kind of longboard or funboard days where you can get some little 14-second period walls to yourself. Water temp is 80°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
So, overall: keep your expectations low for the first week and a half. But mark your calendar for Wednesday the 26th of August. That's your best bet.
Rusty.
