The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve only got one spot on the menu for the next 16 days, so let’s get into it.

This whole stretch is all about Kihei Cove – a sheltered little reef break on the south shore. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there. The overall pattern is slow and small, with a lot of ordinary days, but there are a few windows where the stars align for some really clean, fun waves.

The first real standout arrives on Monday, July 20th. The swell is a tiny 1.0 ft coming from the south with a long 16-second period, and the morning is dead flat calm – glassy as it gets. That’s a recipe for super clean, peeling waves. The energy is moderate (495), so there’s a bit of push behind it. This is your best bet for the whole outlook. It’s a beginner-friendly break, and with that glass, it’ll be a dream.

The good vibes carry into Tuesday, July 21st. Another 1.0 ft south swell, now with a 14-second period, and again, a glassy start to the morning (393 energy). Conditions stay clean through the afternoon, too. This is another solid choice.

Now, we get a bit of a shift. Wednesday, July 22nd sees a drop in wave height to 0.7 ft, but the swell direction goes a bit more south-southwest and the period jumps to a very long 24 seconds. The energy is way up at 645 (moderate). The wind is offshore in the afternoon, keeping things clean. Because of that super long period, it’ll be a bit more fickle and might wall up on a reef like this, but the quality of the wave face should be excellent.

The best quality of the whole run, however, hits on Thursday, July 23rd. The swell is 0.8 ft from the SSW, period is 20 seconds, and the energy is a solid 716 (moderate). The wind is offshore all day. This is the pick for the best shaped, most powerful wave of the window. It’s still small, but it’ll have some real punch.

After that, it’s a slow fade. Friday, July 24th through Saturday, July 26th stay in the 0.8 ft to 1.0 ft range with offshore winds, but the energy and period start to dip. Still fun, but not the standout quality of the earlier days.

We hit a real lull from Sunday, July 27th through the end of the first week of August. The energy drops into the 100s and even down to 85 on the 2nd of August. The waves shrink to 0.5 ft – 0.7 ft, and conditions become more cross-off or just ordinary. There are mornings of glass or light offshore, but the swell is just too weak to get excited about. It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for scraps.

The one late bright spot is Friday, July 31st. A glassy morning with a 0.7 ft south-west swell, 16-second period, and 275 energy. It’s small, but if you’re a beginner, it’ll be as clean and easy as it gets.

The call: If you can only surf one day, make it Monday, July 20th morning at Kihei Cove. The glass and the 1.0 ft south swell with good period will be the cleanest, most fun wave of the entire 16 days. The second pick is Thursday, July 23rd for the best quality, most powerful little wave.

Stay stoked.
Rusty.
