The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks at Mala wharf.

The coming week is a bit of a slow burner, but there's a solid pulse building toward the middle of it. The water's sitting at a comfortable 80°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing crazy there.

The first couple of days, Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th, are pretty small. You're looking at 2ft to 3ft of south-southwest swell, with a period around 12-13 seconds. That's a long-period groundswell, which is good for shape, but the energy is weak (163-310). The wind is offshore from the east-northeast, so the surface will be clean. It's surfable, but nothing to write home about.

Sunday the 6th sees a slight bump, with the swell picking up to 4ft-4ft from the southwest, period stretching to 14 seconds. The combined energy is still moderate (376-565). The wind remains offshore, so it's clean. It's a step up, but still pretty ordinary.

Now, Monday the 7th is where things get interesting. The morning shows 5ft of southwest swell, and by the afternoon, it's a solid 7ft from the west-southwest. That's a significant jump. The period is a very long 15 seconds, which is real groundswell. The combined energy hits strong (1986). This is the standout of the whole forecast. The wind is cross-offshore from the east and southeast, keeping it clean. This is for experienced surfers only – over 8ft can be a handful, but this is close. The wave comment says "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers." This is your window.

Tuesday the 8th is a letdown. The swell drops to 6ft, but the wind switches to a cross-onshore from the south, making it choppy. The energy is moderate (1010). The wave comment is "poor surf conditions." The afternoon is smaller and messy.

From Wednesday the 9th right through to the end of the second week, it drops right off. You're looking at tiny waves, mostly 1.0ft to 2ft. The wind is generally offshore, so it's clean, but there's just nothing to push you around. The combined energy is very weak, often under 100. There's a little spike around Tuesday the 15th and Wednesday the 16th of September where the period jumps to 20-21 seconds, but the swell height is still only 1ft-2ft. That's a lot of period for very little push – it'll be barely breaking.

Honestly, the only real standout is Monday afternoon the 7th. That's your best chance for a proper session. The rest of the time, it's a long flat spell. Don't hold your breath.

Rusty, signing off.
