Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a good look at what's on the menu for Kahului Harbor over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – it's a grim stretch.
First thing you need to know: there are zero good surf days in this whole 16-day window. Not a single one. We’re looking at a solid blank run from now until the 18th of July. It’s all "poor surf conditions" across the board, so don’t be holding your breath.
The one and only break on offer is Kahului Harbor, a reef setup for advanced crew only. It’s got consistent exposure to swell, but the timing couldn’t be worse. The water temp is sitting at 79°, which is right about where you'd expect for this time of year – nothing wild there.
Right from the start on Friday the 3rd, it’s a mess. Cross-onshore winds from the ENE at 12 mph are chopping up a 5 ft swell coming from the ENE with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined wave energy is at 348 (moderate), but it’s ugly. This same pattern holds through the first week: wind holds steady from the ENE at 12 to 16 mph, the swell stays around 4 ft to 6 ft, and the period rarely gets above 8 seconds. Every single entry is rated zero out of ten.
By Monday the 6th, the swell pushes up to 6 ft in the afternoon with energy hitting 397 (still moderate), but that ENE wind at 16 mph keeps it a cross-onshore, choppy disaster. It might be tempting to look at the height, but trust me, it’s not rideable with that wind.
The second week is more of the same. On Sunday the 12th, we get a brief shift with the swell coming from the NE instead, but it’s still 5 ft, a 7-second period, and cross-onshore winds with rain. Then on Monday the 13th, a weird spike: a tiny 1 ft swell from the WNW with a very long 16-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy – and energy at 251 (moderate). But it’s barely enough to surf, and the wind is still cross-onshore at 9 mph. A long-period swell like that at a reef break could be special, but not when it’s this small and choppy.
Through to the end on July 18th, the pattern doesn’t break. Swells hang around 4 ft to 5 ft, short periods between 6 and 8 seconds, and persistent cross-onshore winds. The combined energy never gets into the strong range (all values below 400). It’s a beach-and-reef setup that would honestly be more interesting for kite surfing than paddling out, given the constant breeze.
For an area where the only break is this exposed reef, a blank run like this is just how it goes sometimes. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about. I'd say save the wax and wait for a better window.
Rusty.
