The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks. We’re looking at Kahului Harbor, a reef setup for the advanced crew, and to be honest, the outlook is a bit of a grind. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
We’re starting off with a long stretch of nothing special. From Wednesday, July 15th, right through to the end of the month, the surf is mostly poor. The wind is stuck in that cross to cross-onshore zone from the ENE, blowing a steady 9 to 12 mph, which keeps things choppy and messy. The swell is small, hovering around 3 ft to 5 ft, but it’s short-period stuff—mostly 6 to 8 seconds—so there’s no real push or power. The combined swell energy is weak to moderate at best, hitting values like 108 and 226, which just isn’t enough to get excited about. It’s the kind of week where you’re better off tuning the fins or checking the wax stash.
Now, there’s a glimmer on the horizon. On Monday, July 27th, we see a bit of a shift. The morning brings a small 3 ft swell from the E, but check this out: the period jumps to 14 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, and the combined energy spikes to 516. That’s a moderate-to-strong reading. The catch? The wind is still cross from the ENE at 12 mph, so it’s not clean, but the energy is there. The afternoon bumps up to 5 ft, but the period drops back to 7 seconds, so the morning is the real window of interest. This one’s for the experts only—the reef is advanced, and the size is manageable but the power is real.
Then Tuesday, July 28th, shows some serious energy in the water, with combined energy readings of 615 and 515. The swell is 4 ft to 5 ft, and the period is 12 to 13 seconds, so it’s a proper groundswell. But the wind stays cross-onshore, and the surf is still rated poor. It’s a tease, really. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the consistent cross-onshore wind and that push of energy.
The one true standout in this whole 16-day window is the morning of Monday, July 27th. That 3 ft, 14-second swell from the E is the best of a bad bunch. It’s small, but the period is long, meaning good shape and easy paddling between sets. The reef at Kahului Harbor (Hawaii) will handle that long period well, but the wind is still cross, so it won’t be glassy. Still, it’s the most promising call. Everything else is a no-go. You’re looking at a solid week of poor surf before that Monday, and nothing after Tuesday really fires either.
Hang in there, and keep an eye on the forecasts—things can change.
