Table - best surf conditions forecast for Kawaihae Breakwater over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty. Let's take a look at what's on the table for this stretch.
It's a bit of a slow start here, but we've got a solid run of small, clean, reefy waves coming up once the wind settles. The first few days are pretty ordinary – small and weak, but the wind is offshore so it's not a total write-off. The real story begins Tuesday the 14th and runs through to Friday the 17th. That's the window.
The standout is Kawaihae Breakwater on the Big Island. The best of it is from Tuesday the 14th morning through to Thursday the 16th. We're looking at waist to chest-high swell, 2.0ft to 2.6ft, coming from the west. The swell energy will be moderate, hitting around 298 to 354 (moderate wave energy). The key here is the wind – it goes glassy or very light offshore on the 14th, 15th, and 16th, which means the reef will be smoothing out. Tuesday afternoon is glassy, Wednesday morning is glassy with a calm wind, and Thursday morning is glassy too. The water temp is 80.1°, which is about normal for this time of year.
The swell period is around 15 to 19 seconds, which is a long-period groundswell. That's classic for a reef like this – it'll hold up, wrap around, and give you some proper shape. Expect longer lulls between sets, but the waves that come through will have more push. The optimum direction is west, and it's hitting that dead on. The break is fairly consistent, but it's a reef so it works best on the right swell. Crowds are sometimes a factor, so don't be surprised if there's a few others out.
The Wednesday the 15th morning is my pick – glassy, clear skies, 2.6ft of west swell, and a calm wind. That's about as clean as it gets for this spot.
From Friday the 17th afternoon, the swell drops off and the energy fades. By Saturday the 18th, it's back to knee-high and weak. Then from Sunday the 19th all the way through to Sunday the 26th, it's mostly poor to flat conditions with tiny, weak swell or no swell at all. That's a long, dry gap of about 8 days with nothing worth paddling out for.
So, get it while you can. The 14th through the 17th is the go.
