The Lowdown
Alright, folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s be real, the next couple of weeks for the Big Island are looking pretty flat and quiet. The surf is gonna be a ghost for the most part.
We’re starting off with the only spot that’s even showing a pulse right now, which is Kawaihae Breakwater. The water temperature is sitting at 80°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year. A little touch of a warm anomaly, but nothing wild.
On Saturday the 18th, we’ve got a tiny 2 ft swell rolling in from the west. The period is a solid 13 seconds, so there’s a bit of energy in the water, but it’s weak—the combined energy is only 89. The wind is offshore from the northeast, blowing at 9 to 12 mph, which will keep the surface clean. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. You’ll be scratching for waves. Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are even smaller, dropping to 1.0 ft and 0.7 ft, with energy levels falling off a cliff. By Sunday afternoon, it’s glassy, but there’s just nothing to ride.
After Monday, the 21st through the 29th of July is a brutal stretch. There are days with zero swell, and the few days that show a tiny 0.7 ft wave are basically flat. It’s a big gap of nothing. You’ll be looking at a dry spell for over a week.
Then, as we push into the very end of the month and the start of August, things start to get interesting. On the 31st of July, we see a 1 ft southwest swell with a period of 16 seconds, and the energy is climbing to 67. It’s still small, but the wind is offshore. Then on Saturday the 1st of August, the swell picks up to 2 ft from the west, and the combined energy jumps to 153. The wind is a moderate offshore from the northeast at 12 mph, so it’s going to be a bit bumpy, but the swell is there.
The best of the whole run is shaping up for Sunday the 2nd of August. That’s your standout. The swell is 2 ft from the west, with a period of 14 to 16 seconds. The energy is strong, hitting 322. The wind is offshore from the northeast at 6 mph, keeping it clean. This is a real groundswell, and with that longer period, it’s going to wrap in nicely. The break is a reef, so that long-period energy will be a treat. Expect some really clean, fun little waves. The crowds here are sometimes an issue, so keep an eye out for company.
Overall, it’s a long wait for that Sunday the 2nd, but when it arrives, it’s the one to point the car at.
Rusty.
