Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks at the beach. Got to be straight with you – we’re looking at a big ol’ dry spell to start. Don’t bother waxing up just yet.
The first tiny bit of hope shows up on Friday, July 10th. We’ve got a knee-high 1ft swell from the west at Kawaihae Breakwater. Wind is light and offshore, which is nice for the surface, but the wave energy is still weak (around 69-72). It’s just barely surfable, nothing to get excited about. This spot is a reef, so that little bump might line up a bit. Could be a few others out there too. Water temp is a touch warmer than average, sitting near 81°.
We stay in that same 1ft to 2ft range with the west swell right up through Monday, July 13th. Energy slowly builds (from 113 to 240), but it’s still not much. Winds stay clean though, so if you just need to get out, it’s not the worst thing.
The best stretch of the whole forecast hits on Tuesday, July 14th. Finally, some real ocean energy rolls in. We’re talking 3ft to 3ft of west-northwest swell, with a nice long 16-18 second period. That’s proper groundswell, boys. The combined energy jumps into the moderate range (451-484). Wind is forecast to be glassy in the morning and barely a breeze after lunch. This is going to be smooth, clean, lined-up surf. For a reef break like this, that long-period west-northwest swell is money. This is the day to target. Wednesday and Thursday, July 15th and 16th, are almost as good with the same 3ft west-northwest swell and clean offshore breezes. Energy stays strong (319-447). These are your golden days.
After that, we fade out. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th drop back to 2ft-2ft, with energy falling off. Still some clean moments, but nothing special. The very end on Sunday, July 19th, shows a tiny 1ft-1ft swell with a super drawn-out 20-second period. That’s the kind of swell that works best on a reef or point, not a beach. Energy is weak again (120-152), so it’s just a whimper to finish.
Bottom line: a long flat start, then a solid 3-day window of clean, fun surf from Tuesday the 14th through Thursday the 16th. That’s your window.
Rusty.
