The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let's break down the Kawaihae Breakwater outlook for the next 16 days. It's a pretty quiet stretch, with a lot of small, barely rideable swell. The water temp is about average for the season, nothing special.
The first real shot at anything comes on Thursday, August 20th. We're looking at a tiny 1 ft swell from the SW, with a very long period of 18 seconds. That's a true groundswell, but the energy is weak, at 87. The wind is light and cross-off, so it'll be clean, but you'll be fighting for a ripple.
Friday, August 21st, is the best of the bunch. Still small, with a 1 ft swell from the SW, period dropping to 16 seconds. The key here is the wind: dead glassy, calm conditions in the morning. The combined energy is a moderate 118. For a longboard, the glassy surface and that long period making the reef work might give you a few little rides. It's a reef, so the long period helps it wrap, but it's not going to be powerful.
Saturday, August 22nd, holds similar size with a 2 ft W swell in the morning, period dropping to 10 seconds, with a clean offshore wind. The afternoon energy is moderate at 116. It's ridable, but that's about it.
Then things go south. From Sunday, August 23rd, the wind kicks up hard. A near-gale offshore makes it impossible to paddle. The rest of the week is a mix of tiny, 0.7 ft swells and light winds, but the energy is gone. The breakwater is inconsistent at the best of times, and this is a flat spell.
The last chance to see anything is on the 30th and 31st of August. The 30th shows a 1 ft WNW swell, 14-second period, with a clean offshore breeze. The energy is a weak 67, but it's clean. The 31st has a similar 1 ft WNW swell, 13-second period, and a glassy afternoon. It's small, but it's clean. After that, it's back to flat conditions into the first week of September.
So, the standout is Friday, August 21st. It's the only day with true glassy conditions and a little bit of energy from a SW groundswell. It's not for everyone, and you'll need a log, but it's the cleanest window we have. The rest of the time is a waiting game.
Rusty.
