Table - best surf conditions forecast for Kawaihae Breakwater over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Kawaihae Breakwater has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
Right now, it’s flat as a pancake. We’ve got a stretch of nothing from Wednesday morning right through to the end of Friday – that’s about three days of zero surf. The water is sitting at 80°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least the swim’s nice.
Things finally start to tick over from Saturday the 11th of July. Saturday morning sees tiny 1 ft waves rolling in from the west, with a long 14-second period. The energy is weak, only about 112 (moderate wave energy), but the wind is a light offshore from the NE – clean as a whistle. It’s very ordinary, but at least you’ll get a few knee-high sliders. Saturday afternoon the period jumps to 18 seconds, and the energy climbs to 143, still small though. It’s a reef break here, so that long period groundswell will actually wrap in nicely. Just keep in mind this spot can get busy sometimes. Sunday the 12th and Monday the 13th are pretty similar – small 1 ft, moderate energy around 120-130, and consistent light offshore winds. Nothing to write home about.
The standout window is definitely Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th of July. Wednesday morning we see 3 ft from the west, 15-second period, energy jumping to 337 – that’s strong wave energy. The wind is light offshore from the NE, so the face will be glassy and clean. Wednesday afternoon turns even better: ENE wind at only 3 mph, almost glassy, with the same 3 ft at 351 energy. Thursday follows up with 3 ft, 16-second period, and energy peaking at 357. That’s the pick of the whole run – clean, steady, waist-high plus waves with real push behind them for the reef. It’s not huge, but it’s the best we’ll see.
After that, we taper off. Friday the 17th drops to 2 ft, energy back down to around 250, and the wind goes a little cross-off, so it gets a bit textured. The weekend of the 18th and 19th fades further, with 2 ft on Saturday and 1 ft by Sunday. Sunday morning is glassy though, with a NNE breeze at 3 mph – pretty as a picture if you like ankle-biters. Then Monday the 20th through to the end of the forecast period on Thursday the 23rd, we’re back to tiny, poor surf with energy under 100. It’s a long flat spell to end the run.
Overall, don’t rush out until Wednesday the 15th. That’s the day to paddle out at Kawaihae Breakwater for clean, fun waves with some west swell and proper energy.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
