Big Island Surf Forecast map for predicting the best wave and wind conditions across the region. For surfers, the map shows the most powerful swell tracking across near-shore open water and not the peak waves experienced by boats out at sea. Move your mouse over the ocean swell symbols or the surf breaks on the coastline to see a more detailed surf forecast including wave period and wind conditions. The forecast updates every 6 hours and most live weather reports update every hour. You can animate the Big Island Surf map or show live wind and wave conditions as reported from wavebuoys and local weather stations. Surf breaks shown along the Big Island coastline are also listed below.

Big Island Surf Breaks

The Big Island is the southern most island in the Hawaiian chain and because of this gets swell from just about every direction. The scenery can be as nice as coconut lined white or black sand beaches and as stark as being completely surrounded by the backbone of the island...old lava. Shallow reef breaks are usually a requirement for good surf but there are a few deep water breaks and even fewer beach breaks. Winter is the season on our island with large swells from the north and west. Look for the occasional large southern swell in the summer and if you want the most consistent surf on island check out the Hilo side of Hawaii.....Erik

Kona is reefy and rocky with crystal clear warm water. SW swells in the summer WNW in the winter. If no surf on this side... head to Hilo... a short 2 hour drive.....Logan
