Hakalau in Big Island is an exposed river break that has reasonably consistent surf. Winter is the favoured time of year for surfing here. Works best in offshore winds from the west southwest. Most of the surf here comes from groundswells and the optimum swell angle is from the east northeast. Sometimes crowded. Take care of - Rips / undertow - Rocks - Man-made danger (buoys etc.) - Localism - Pollution - Sharks.

“Hakalau Neach closed still due to high levles of Lead metal contamination. Not safe to get in water or touch soil in park or in water.”
