Table - best surf conditions forecast for Hakalau over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks at Hakalau.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough run. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window, but honestly, there’s no proper stand-out session in there. The whole stretch is plagued by onshore or cross-onshore wind, mostly blowing straight out of the east, which is about the worst direction for this setup. That onshore wind is just shredding the surface, making everything a choppy mess.
We’re starting Sunday, July 12th, with some rain showers and a 12 mph easterly wind. The swell is hanging around 6 ft, from the east, but with a short period of only 8 seconds. The combined energy is moderate, coming in at 979, but with that wind, it’s gonna be a messy, blown-out wall. Not what we want.
This trend doesn’t let up. Through Monday and into Tuesday, the swell drops a bit, but the wind stays on it from the east. The water is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
Wednesday the 15th through Friday the 17th see the wind pick up again, with moderate breezes around 12-15 mph from the ESE. The wave heights are knee-to-waist high max, and the period is a short, weak 7 seconds. The energy drops significantly into the low-to-mid hundreds (168 to 162). This is not surf for a paddle board; the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing with this constant onshore wind.
We get a little bump in size around Saturday, July 18th, into Sunday the 19th, with waves pushing 5 ft to 6 ft from the east. The period is still short (8 seconds), and the wind is still on it, so again, the quality is just not there. It’s waves, but not surfable waves worth paddling out for.
Then, heading into the second week, from July 20th, there’s a real lull. The swell gets small, between 2 ft and 4 ft, with even weaker north-easterly energy. The only glimmer is that the period briefly jumps to 15 seconds on the 20th, but that’s a groundswell and a long period, which can break too straight and close out at a river mouth like Hakalau. It’s also paired with a still-poor wind.
From July 21st right through to the 27th, it’s just small, short-period slop. The wind never truly drops to that magical offshore. Hakalau is a fairly consistent spot, so a blank run like this is a bit of a rough patch, but not unheard of. The forecasts can change, but as it stands, save your energy.
For the whole 16 days, there is no standout session.
Rusty.
