Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for your local stretch.
Honestly, I’m looking at this 16-day run and it’s a bit of a quiet one. We’re in for a real flat spell with no standout surf at all. The whole window is filled with weak, short-period windswell from the NE and ENE, mostly around 3 ft to 6 ft, with a period barely hitting 8 seconds – that’s just bumpy, crumbly stuff. The combined swell energy barely gets out of the two hundreds, peaking at 355 (moderate wave energy) on Monday the 6th of July afternoon, but even then the conditions are poor.
What’s really grinding my gears is the wind. For the entire first week, it’s onshore from the E or ENE at around 9 mph, sometimes 12 mph, keeping everything choppy and messy. There’s no stretch of clean, glassy conditions to look forward to. The surf breaks might be giving us something like 5 ft or 5 ft, but with that short period and onshore breeze, it’s just a bumpy, lumpy mess.
The only spot in the mix is Hakalau (Hawaii) – a river mouth setup that’s fairly consistent but exposed to the swell. The optimum swell direction is from the ENE, and we do get that at times, but the wind is wrong and the period is too short to shape anything decent. The wave comment across the whole forecast is “poor surf conditions,” and that says it all. Even on the few mornings that start clear, the onshore wind kicks up quick. Toward the second week, from around the 12th of July, the swell drops even further to about 3 ft to 4 ft, with cross-onshore winds making it choppy and uninviting. There’s nothing here that gets the heart racing.
If you’re really keen to get wet, the best you’ll get is maybe a small, weak wave at Hakalau on the 11th of July Saturday afternoon, when the wind drops to a light breeze from the NE at 6 mph and the sea state goes unknown – could be a little cleaner, but the swell’s only 3 ft from the ESE, not the optimum direction, and the energy is weak (217). Not a standout by any stretch.
So, unless you’re into a flat spell, I’d keep the board in the car and maybe check back in a week. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a proper lull.
Rusty.
