Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what we've got on the cards.

Honestly, the next couple of weeks are gonna be a mixed bag for Hakalau. We're looking at a lot of small, short-period swell (around 7-8 seconds) with onshore or cross-onshore winds, which is never a good recipe for clean waves. For the first week, it’s a grind. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is about normal for this time of year, so at least you won't be freezing.

From Tuesday afternoon, 7 July, right through to the end of that first week, the wind is mostly out of the east or east-northeast. The swell is consistently small, hovering between 4 ft and 6 ft. None of that is groundswell; it's all short-period wind chop. The combined energy figures are mostly in the 300 to 400 range (moderate), but the raw numbers don't mean much when it's this messy. The wave comment is "poor surf conditions" for almost every session, and the scores reflect that. You'd be fighting an onshore breeze or a cross-onshore wind that'll have the surface chopped up. On Wednesday morning, 8 July, there's a brief window of clear skies and a bit of ENE swell, but the period is still a measly 7 seconds, so it's not going to offer much shape.

We get a slight bump in energy through Saturday and Sunday, 11-12 July, with the combined energy climbing to 406 and 508, but the wind remains a problem. Sunday afternoon, 12 July, shows "some clouds" with an onshore breeze and the comment shifts to "marginal" at best. It's a tiny step up, but nothing to get excited about.

Then, we hit a real dry spell from around Monday, 13 July, through to Thursday, 16 July. The swell dips, the winds are messy, and it's the same story of "poor" or "marginal" conditions. This is a run of days where you’re probably better off doing something else.

Now, here's where it gets interesting, but you'll have to wait for it. On Monday, 20 July, we see the first sign of something real. The morning session has an ENE swell of 6 ft with a period of 7 seconds, but the real standout is Monday afternoon. We get an E swell at 3 ft, but the period jumps to a massive 17 seconds. That's a very long-period groundswell. The combined energy shoots up to 910 (strong). The wind is light and offshore from the ENE. This is the kind of setup that could make Hakalau a proper river mouth wave. The wind will be clean, and that long period will bring plenty of power and shape. It's still a week and a half away, so treat it as a promising prospect, but it's the first real hope we've got.

Tuesday, 21 July, keeps that long-period energy going with a 16-second interval and an even stronger combined energy of 1267 in the morning and 1235 in the afternoon. But the wind swings to the east and southeast, turning cross-onshore, which will mess up the surface. Still, with that kind of energy and period, you might find a clean peak if you're picky. After that, Wednesday and Thursday, 22-23 July, the period drops back to 13-14 seconds, the wind picks up to 12 mph, and conditions look poor again.

So, to sum it up: for the next 10 days, it's mostly a write-off. Your one true standout is the afternoon of Monday, 20 July. That's your best bet – a clean, offshore, long-period groundswell with good energy. Keep an eye on that one, but don't hold your breath for anything else.

Rusty.
