The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Hakalau over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the outlook is a bit of a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor conditions right out of the gate. From Sunday the 19th right through to Wednesday the 23rd, it’s all cross-onshore wind and choppy, messy surf. The swell is small and weak, with energy levels sitting in the low to mid hundreds, and the period is short, around 7 to 8 seconds – just windswell junk. It’s not really worth paddling out for.
The first hint of something better shows up on Wednesday the 22nd in the afternoon, where the wind goes light onshore and the swell period jumps to 12 seconds, giving us a bit more shape. The energy bumps up to 594 (moderate), but it’s still only marginal surf. The water temp is about average for July at 80°, so no surprises there.
Thursday the 23rd morning is similar – marginal, with a 5ft east swell at 11 seconds and energy at 652. Still cross-onshore, though. Not a standout.
We finally get a bit of a pulse on Saturday the 25th. The wind goes light onshore, and the swell jumps to a very long period of 16 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The morning is small, only 3ft, but the afternoon sees a cleaner 4ft east swell. The energy is up to 919 (moderate-strong). This is the first time the setup looks like it might have some shape, but it’s still a bit marginal.
The real standout in this window is Sunday the 26th. The swell is 6ft from the east, with a very long 16-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 1772 (strong) in the morning and 1726 in the afternoon. Winds are light onshore or cross-onshore, not ideal, but with that much groundswell, Hakalau (a river mouth) could have some nice lines. It’s a fairly consistent spot, but it can get crowded sometimes. The swell is right in the sweet spot for intermediate surfers – not too big, not too small. The water is still normal for the time of year.
Monday the 27th is also worth a mention. The swell holds at 7ft from the east, period 14 seconds, and energy is over 1900 (very strong). That’s a solid size – a bit hefty for beginners, but good for experienced surfers. Winds are light and variable, mostly cross-onshore, but it’s clean enough. Again, crowds are possible.
After Tuesday the 28th, the surf quickly drops off. The energy falls back to the hundreds, the period shortens, and we’re back to poor conditions and cross-onshore winds through the end of the month and into early August. Not much to get excited about.
So, if you’re planning a session, the best bet is Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th. That’s your window.
