Waipio Valley Surf Guide

Waipio Valley in Big Island is an exposed river break that has fairly consistent surf and can work at any time of the year. The best wind direction is from the south southwest. Groundswells more frequent than windswells and the ideal swell direction is from the north. The quality of the surf isn't affected by the tide. When it's working here, it can get crowded. Hazards include - Rips / undertow - Rocks - Localism - Sharks.

“Local don’t like the tourist or visitors. Too many tourists make the road going up and down very dangerous by not yielding to traffic. The locals know who’s not from there. Don’t expect a warm welcome because more than likely your not gonna get it, especially if you try and surf. Stay on top at the lookout and enjoy the view.”
