The Lowdown

Alright, surf’s finally starting to show a bit of life after a flat spell. It’s been a slow one, but there are a few windows coming up that are worth your time. Let’s break it down.

The next few days are gonna be a grind. We’re looking at small, weak surf with a lot of poor conditions. Don’t get too worked up about the start of this run. It’s not until we get to the weekend that things start to get interesting.

Saturday, August 8th marks the first real shift. The swell starts to fill in a little, and by the afternoon, we get some glassy conditions at Manini Beach (Big Island) . It’s still pretty small, around 1.3ft, but the clean, glassy surface is a huge plus. The wave energy is starting to build, but it’s still nothing to write home about. Sunday afternoon is similar—a bit more size at 1.6ft, still glassy, and the energy is picking up. It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for it.

The real standout looks like it’s shaping up for Wednesday, August 12th. The swell is pushing to a solid 3.3ft with a period over 17 seconds—that’s some proper groundswell. The morning is still a bit wonky, but the afternoon glass-off looks like the best bet of the week. The energy is strong, and the surf quality is expected to be very good. This is the day to clear your schedule. It’s still a beginner-friendly size, but the power and shape should be there. The only caveat is the long period—it might break a bit straight on a beach break, but on the reef, it should be beautiful.

After that, we get a few days of consistent, but not spectacular, surf in the 3.3ft range through to the 14th. The wind isn’t perfect, but it’s manageable. It’s more of a “get your fix” kind of surf than a standout.

The second week is looking thinner. We drop back down to smaller, weaker swells with more of a west in the mix. There’s a bit of a pulse on the 19th and 20th, but it’s inconsistent and the energy is much lower. The 20th could see another glassy afternoon, but don’t hold your breath for anything epic.

So, to sum it up: The pick of the bunch is definitely the afternoon of Wednesday, August 12th. The long-period south swell and glassy winds are the perfect combo for Manini’s reef. The weekend before that is a good warm-up, but nothing more. The rest is just waiting and watching.

Stay stoked.
