Table - best surf conditions forecast for Mavericks over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s on offer.
Right now, looking at the next couple of weeks, I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch for Mavericks. The overall pattern shows a lot of onshore or cross-onshore wind and only marginal conditions at best. There’s a bit of a gap here with no real recommendations until we get into the first week, so don’t expect much action early on.
Friday 10 July kicks things off, but it’s not pretty. We’ve got a 7 ft WNW swell rolling in with a period of 9 seconds and a cross-on breeze blowing at 12 mph. That wind is going to chop it up bad. The combined swell energy is strong (1361), but it’s messy. The water temp is sitting at 60°, which is 4° warmer than usual – that’s notable, feels like a warm bath compared to normal for this time of year. Still, the surf quality is poor.
Later that afternoon, the swell drops to 5 ft, but it stays cross-on and choppy. Not worth paddling out.
Saturday 11 July morning offers a smaller 5 ft WNW swell, but the wind is onshore at 9 mph. Combined energy is moderate (626), but the conditions are just not there. Afternoon drops to a tiny 2 ft SW groundswell with a very long 15-second period, but the cross-on wind kills it.
Sunday 12 July through to Monday 13 July – we see some consistency in size, with swell hovering around 4 ft to 5 ft and a period of 8 to 9 seconds, but the wind is always on or cross-on. The energy is moderate (around 347 to 757), but it’s all marginal or poor. No standouts here.
Tuesday 14 July – morning has 4 ft WNW and onshore wind. Afternoon, 5 ft and cross-on again. Not happening.
Now, Wednesday 15 July morning – this is the closest we get to a highlight. A 7 ft WNW swell with a 8-second period and a gentle cross-onshore breeze (9 mph). The combined energy is strong (1132). But the wind is still cross-on, and the surf quality is only marginal. For a spot like Mavericks, this is not the clean, big-wave session you’d hope for. Crowds are possible here – it’s a famous spot. At 7 ft, this is getting solid, so this is more for experienced surfers. Beginners should stay well clear. Still, given the overall poor run, this Wednesday morning stands out as the best on offer for the whole period.
After that, from Thursday 16 July onward, the swell drops off and the period gets very long (15 to 22 seconds) with tiny heights of 1 ft to 3 ft. The wind stays on or cross-on. The energy declines into the weak range (under 400). The forecast gets less certain as we go into the second week, but the numbers don’t lie – it’s flat and poor.
So, the one and only standout is the Wednesday 15 July morning at Mavericks. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best we’ve got. If you’re an expert and you can handle a bit of bump, that’s your window. Otherwise, it’s a long wait.
