Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next 16 days for Mavericks. Straight up, it’s a tough run. The water is a balmy 60°F, which is a massive 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year – feels like a warm bath for a Northern California spot.
The first week is a write-off. From Saturday, July 4th, right through to Wednesday, July 8th, the swell is tiny, weak, and the wind is onshore or cross-onshore. The combined energy is mostly in the low to mid hundreds (264 to 762), which is just weak, junky energy. The wave heights are barely cracking 3 ft, with a short period under 14 seconds. It’s messy, small, and not worth paddling out for.
Thursday, July 9th, morning sees a jump in size to 8 ft from the WNW, but the period drops to a weak 9 seconds, and the cross-onshore wind is 12 mph. The energy is strong (1676), but the quality is poor. That’s too big and blown out for any fun. This pattern of onshore or cross-onshore wind and poor surf conditions holds through the middle of the month. The waves are consistently in the 4 ft to 7 ft range, but the period is short (8 seconds) and the wind is never clean. The energy readings are moderate to strong (334 to 985), but it’s all wind-affected slop.
There is a slight glimmer on Thursday, July 16th, morning. The swell drops to 2 ft but the period jumps to a very long 19 seconds from the West. That’s a proper groundswell, but it’s tiny. Combined energy is 547 (moderate). The wind is a cross-onshore 9 mph from the NW. For a reef like Mavericks, that long period could wrap in, but the size is just a whisper. The next morning, Friday, July 17th, is similar: 2 ft from the West at 17 seconds, with a light cross-onshore breeze. The energy is 595. It’s marginal, but the long period is the only hint of real ocean power in the whole outlook.
The entire 16-day window is a bust. There are no standout sessions. The consistent theme is poor surf conditions and cross-onshore wind. Even the bigger days are a mess. For a spot that needs a big, clean, long-period WNW swell with offshore wind, this forecast offers none of that. The setup is more interesting for a kite session than a paddle session with the persistent wind.
Rusty, signing off.
