Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve looked over the charts for our local zone, and it’s going to be a real grind for the next 16 days. There’s swell around, but the wind is going to make a mess of things for most of it.
We’ve got a dry spell right at the start. There’s nothing really worth paddling out for until Wednesday morning, July 8th, and even then it’s a tough sell.
On Wednesday the 8th, there’s some energy showing at Mavericks, but it’s a cross-onshore breeze from the WNW at 12 mph. The swell is about 3 ft from the SW with a long, 18-second period. That kind of period means the waves will have good shape and more energy, with longer lulls between sets. The combined energy is moderate (1054). But that wind is going to keep it lumpy and choppy. The water temp is 61°F, which is about 5°F warmer than average for this time of year – a real warm anomaly, so the water is unusually warm.
Thursday the 9th, the swell size jumps to 7 ft from the WNW but with a short 9-second period. That’s a choppy, disorganised mess with a cross-onshore wind at 12 mph. The energy is strong (1391), but at that size and with that wind, it’s big, ugly, and only for the experienced crew.
The rest of that first week and into the second is more of the same: cross-onshore winds, choppy conditions, and marginal surf. A few mornings on the 10th, 11th, and 12th see lighter winds, but the swell is small (around 5 ft to 6 ft) with a short period of 8 seconds – not much power or shape.
Keep your eyes on Friday, July 17th. That’s the big promise in this forecast. The morning shows a solid 7 ft swell from the WNW with an 8-second period, but the wind drops to a light 6 mph from the west and goes ‘on’. That could clean things up nicely. The combined energy is strong (1184). At 7 ft, it’s going to be too big for beginners – this is for the regulars and up. It’s the only window where we get that combination of size and clean conditions, even if the wave quality is still listed as marginal.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th still have light winds (6 mph), but the swell fades. Saturday has a mix of about 5 ft WNW and a long-period 2 ft SW (18 seconds) in the afternoon – small but clean. Sunday is back to tiny 2 ft.
The standout is Friday, the 17th of July. Get on the early session if that light wind shows up. It’s a gamble, but it’s the only real chance in this whole run for a proper, clean session. The rest is going to be a waiting game.
Rusty.
