The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Mavericks is cookin' up for us over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week or so is a real bummer. We're looking at a long, dry spell with no decent surf on offer. From now, right through until the end of August, it’s pretty much a write-off. The swell is tiny, mostly around 1ft to 2ft, and coming from the southwest with a long period, but the wind is a constant issue, mostly cross-onshore from the northwest. The wave energy is weak, barely cracking 250 (258) on Sunday morning. It’s just choppy, messy, and not worth paddling out for. This stretch is a classic case of "don't bother."
Then we get into the first few days of September, and it starts to look a little more interesting, but it's still marginal. Wednesday morning the 2nd of September has a light onshore breeze and a tiny 1ft SW swell with a very long 17-second period, but the energy is still weak (202). Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th of September show a bit more life, with the swell building to 2ft and then 3ft, still from the southwest, with a good long period of 18-19 seconds. The wind is light and onshore, which is a major positive for this spot, meaning it could be glassy and clean. The combined energy is starting to build, hitting 507 on Thursday morning. It’s not big, but for a wave this heavy, clean, small conditions are the most accessible.
The real standout, the one that gets my heart pumping, is Saturday the 5th of September. The morning session is the best on offer across the whole forecast. We’ve got a clean 3ft southwest groundswell with a 16-second period, and the wind is light and onshore. The wave energy is pumping at a solid 864, which is moderate but with that long period, the power will be there. This is the window. Mavericks is an advanced, consistent reef break, and with the wind light and the swell direction matching the optimum (WNW) reasonably well, the sets could be lined up and proper. Just know that crowds are sometimes an issue here, so get there early.
After that, the wind turns cross-onshore again for the second week, and the quality drops off. There's still some swell around, but it gets lumpy and choppy, so it's back to the wait-and-see game.
Rusty, signing off.
