The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a close look at what’s coming up for Mavericks.
Overall, the next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag. We start with a period of poor conditions, and the real standout doesn't show up until the end of the run. It’s a classic case of waiting it out for the good stuff.
We kick off with a bit of swell on Friday, July 17th, but don’t get excited. The morning sees a 6ft swell from the WNW, but the wind is on it and the surf is poor. The wave energy is moderate (919). The water is sitting at a very unusual 60°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. The afternoon drops to a tiny 2ft, and it’s crossed-up. The whole first weekend is pretty much a write-off with small, inconsistent swells and onshore winds.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Monday, July 20th, in the morning. We’ve got a 2ft SW groundswell (16-second period) and the wind goes glassy. That’s the key here. The wave energy is weak (261), but clean conditions on a spot like this? Worth a look for a few little ones. The rest of that week stays small and marginal, with onshore and cross-shore winds messing things up.
The pattern starts to change around the end of the month. From July 27th onward, the swell starts to build. The energy is picking up, hitting over 1000 by Monday afternoon, but the wind is still a problem, keeping it marginal. By Thursday, July 30th, we see a 7ft WNW swell, but it’s a short period of 9 seconds, and the wind is on it. It’s a messy, powerful lump.
Now, the real standout for the whole outlook is a few days later. On the morning of Saturday, August 1st, we have a 5ft WNW swell. The wave energy is still strong (622). The wind is cross-shore, but it’s a gentle breeze, keeping it cleaner than anything else around. The swell direction matches the optimum for Mavericks, and while it’s not massive, it’s the best combination of size and manageable wind we’ve seen. This is a solid, experienced surfer's session. The afternoon cleans up even more, with a 5ft WNW and offshore wind, but the energy drops off a bit.
So, the pick of the litter is Saturday, August 1st. The morning offers the best blend of size and condition. It’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it, but it’s the one to circle on the calendar.
Rusty.
