The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got a long stretch ahead, and honestly, for the next week and a half, it’s gonna be a tough watch. The surf window is stubbornly small, and we’re looking at a lot of small, weak, and messy conditions. The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t show up until the end of the month.
The first bit of surf worth paddling for is on Friday morning, July 17th, at Mavericks. There’s a 6ft swell rolling in from the WNW, but the period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s wonky and disorganized. The combined energy is moderate at 893, and with a WNW wind on it, it’s not clean. The water is a very unusual 60°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. Still, the conditions are marginal at best, and the tide is a question mark. After that, it fades fast.
The rest of the week? Forget it. From Friday afternoon through the entire week, we’ve got wave heights dropping to 2ft or 2ft, with periods all over the place. Saturday the 18th through Sunday the 19th is a write-off, with poor surf conditions and cross-onshore winds. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st offer a slight bump to 4ft, but the wind is cross-on or cross-shore, and the energy is weak. The combined energy for Tuesday morning is only 503, which is just barely moderate. It’s not worth the paddle.
We hit a dry spell from Wednesday, July 22nd, all the way through to Sunday, July 26th. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly cross-onshore, and the whole thing is a mess. If you’re a kite surfer, the strong cross-onshore winds and choppy conditions might look interesting, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a no-go.
Now, here’s the one that caught my eye. On Thursday morning, July 30th, we finally get a pulse. There’s a 5ft swell from the WNW, and while the period is a short 9 seconds, the combined energy is a solid 806. The wind is light and onshore, which is better than what we’ve been seeing, but it’s still marginal. This is the best bet in the whole 16-day window. It’s not a perfect day, but it’s the only one that gets close to being a stand-out. If you’re an expert, you might get a few decent ones here. The 5ft height is pushing it for beginners.
After that, Friday July 31st has a 4ft WNW swell, but by then the energy has dropped to 358, and the period is only 9 seconds. It’s a fade-out. The last day in the forecast, Saturday August 1st, is back to tiny 2ft swell and poor conditions.
So, to sum it up: it’s a long, flat, and windy stretch. The only real chance to get wet is on Thursday morning, July 30th, at Mavericks. That’s your window. The rest is a waiting game. Keep your eyes on the charts, because it tends not to stay this poor for long.
Rusty.
