The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s talk about Mavericks.
Alright, look, I’m gonna be straight with you – the next two weeks at Mavericks are a tough watch. The weather's fine, but the ocean just isn't playing ball for a clean, proper session. The water is sitting at 60° which is a solid 4° warmer than usual for this time of year, so that's a bit weird, but it's not going to help you catch a wave.
Thursday the 16th kicks off with a 5ft to 6ft WNW swell, but it's got that cross-on wind from the WNW at 12 mph, making it choppy and messy. The energy is moderate at best (503), and it's just poor surf conditions. Friday the 17th is a bit of the same story – a touch more size at 6ft in the morning, but the wind is still onshore, and the late morning and afternoon are just junk. The energy does pick up to 979 that morning, but it's still a "marginal" call at best.
We get a glimmer on Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th, with a tiny 2ft to 3ft SW groundswell, but it's running a super long 17 to 18 seconds. That's a classic reef-swell at a place like this, but it's more of a whisper than a roar. The wind is onshore at 9 mph, so it's not clean, and the energy is moderate (472 to 823). The spot is "inconsistent" at the best of times, and this is a prime example of that.
The whole first week is a write-off, really. There's a gap of poor conditions from the 16th right through to the 21st, where the only thing changing is the wind direction. By the 20th, we have a light breeze, but the swell is microscopic and the energy is weak.
The second week doesn't get much better. Monday the 21st to Wednesday the 23rd is all cross-on wind with tiny, low-energy swells. Thursday the 24th is a real head-scratcher. We get a 2ft swell with a 24-second period, which is insanely long, and the energy is strong (1228). But that's just a long-period groundswell hitting a beach break, and it's going to break too straight and be a nightmare to paddle out on. The wind is still cross-on at 16 mph, so it's a total mess.
Now, here's the one thing that might pique your interest. Sunday the 26th. We get a 7ft WNW swell, which is a proper size, but it's a short period of 8 seconds. The energy is very strong (1455), but it's cross-on wind at 9 mph. The call is "marginal" because of the tide. For a spot like this, that's a big, powerful, but short-period swell with a side wind. It's more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle.
The last few days of July are the same story – a mix of small, long-period SW groundswells and cross-on winds. The morning of the 31st is the best of a bad bunch, with a 4ft WNW swell (8 seconds) and a light SW wind, so the energy is there (460), but it's still a "marginal" call. Honestly, if you're looking for a standout, there isn't one. The best you can hope for is a fleeting, clean window on a very small day, but it’s not going to be a classic Mavericks session. This is a blank run, and for a break that's this inconsistent, it's a bit more normal for the area.
