The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' at Mavericks over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. The first notable surf we see is a pulse on Wednesday the 15th, but it's barely worth a mention. We're looking at a 5 ft swell from the WNW with a short 8-second period, and the wind is a cross-on mess at 9-12 mph, making things choppy. The water is a notable 61°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, but that's the only good news. The combined energy is moderate (604), but the quality is just poor. Friday morning the 17th sees a small window with lighter winds, but it's still a short-period swell and the conditions are only marginal.
Honestly, for the first week and a half, it’s a whole lot of nothing. The swell drops to tiny 2 ft from the 18th through the 23rd, with either cross-on or light onshore winds. The energy is weak, and the surf is just flat or poor. You'd be better off doing something else.
Now, things get a little interesting around the 24th of July. A long-period groundswell shows up, with a 24-second period on Friday the 24th. The swell height is still small at 2 ft, but the energy starts to climb into the moderate range (619). The wind is light and onshore, so while it's not clean, the potential is there at a wave like this. The real standout window is the weekend of the 25th and 26th. Saturday morning the 25th looks the best of the whole run. The swell is 3 ft from the SW, but the period is a very long 21 seconds, and the combined energy is strong (927). The wind is light and straight onshore, which for a wave like Mavericks, isn't a deal-breaker. This is a wave that eats that long-period groundswell. It's a reef break, so it's consistent, and it's exposed to the swell. This is big-wave territory, so it's strictly for experts, especially with that amount of energy. Even with the onshore wind, it's the most promising window we've got. Sunday the 26th is similar, with a 20-second period (812 energy), but again, it's a select crew only.
For the rest of the run into the 30th, we're back to small, weak, and poor conditions. The long-range window around the 24th-26th is the only real chance of a wave, but it's a long way out, so keep an eye on it. The wind could clean up, or the swell could fade. Right now, it's a promising but uncertain call.
Rusty.
