Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here with the lowdown on your local break. Let’s be honest: this is a tough one to call. There’s just not much happening at Mavericks for the next couple of weeks.
From the start of the forecast, we’ve got a huge dry spell. From July 4th all the way until the morning of July 8th, the surf is a no-go. Tiny waves, cross-on winds, and poor quality. You’d be wasting your time paddling out. The wind is a mess – coming from SSW, WSW, and onshore from the WNW – with wave heights barely hitting 3 ft. There’s just no quality in that first block.
The first real shift comes on Wednesday morning, July 8th. We see a spike in swell to about 6 ft from the WNW. The wave energy jumps to (1200), which finally shows some life. But the period is a short 8 seconds, meaning it’s windswell, not the good stuff. And the wind is still onshore from the W, so it’s messy. It’s a marginal day at best, scoring just a 2 out of 10. Not one to chase.
Thursday morning, July 9th brings another pulse: 7 ft from the WNW with a 9-second period (1416 energy), but the same problem – onshore wind from the WNW. At that size, it’s for experts only anyway, and with the wind on it, you’re fighting a losing battle.
The rest of the first week is a bust. Into the second week, there’s a little hop on the afternoon of July 15th with a 7 ft WNW swell (1317 energy) and a slightly better 9-second period. The wind is lighter from the WSW at about 10 km/h, but it’s still onshore. That one gets a 2 out of 10 too. Not a standout.
As we get towards the third week, the swell gets smaller and longer period. By July 18th and 19th, we’ve got long-period groundswell (15-16 seconds) from the WNW, but it’s only about 2 ft high. The long period would be good at a reef or point, but the cross-on winds from the NNW and NW will ruin the face.
It’s a world-class reef break and it wants a WNW swell, but you need clean light winds or offshore to make it work. That’s just not in the cards here. For a lot of this stretch, with the wind and chop, it’s looking more like a kiteboarding zone than a surfing spot.
Water temperature is sitting around 60°F, which is about 4° warmer than normal for this time of year – you’ll definitely feel that difference in your wetsuit.
Honestly, this is a long, slow stretch for Mavericks. No real standouts, just a lot of waiting. I’d say leave the big boards at home for now. Check back later.
