Table - best surf conditions forecast for Mavericks over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let me tell you straight up, the next 16 days looking at Mavericks are a tough pill to swallow. It’s a pretty bleak run for paddle surfing, so let’s get into it.
The overall pattern is dominated by a series of WNW swells, but they’re coming in with short, weak periods, mostly around 8 seconds, and the wind is almost always on it. The water is sitting at 60°F, which is a whopping 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year – a really noticeable shift.
The first proper surf recommendation isn’t really there. The whole period from Friday, July 10th, right through to the end of the window on Saturday, July 25th, is a washout. There’s a massive gap with no good surf. The swell energy is weak to moderate at best, with values like 883 (moderate) on the 10th, and even 929 (moderate) on the 15th, but the wind is never favourable. It’s either cross-on or straight onshore, with a gentle to moderate breeze most days, shredding any chance of a clean wave.
The best of a bad bunch might be a couple of mornings where the wind is light and onshore, like Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th, with a 4 ft to 4 ft swell from the WNW. But the wave comment says it all: “poor surf conditions” or “marginal.” The period is a weak 8 seconds, so the energy is low and the shape will be poor.
For a spot like Mavericks, which is a heavy, exposed reef, these conditions are just not it. With the swell under 5 ft and the wind messing it up, it’s more of a kite-foiling circus than a surf break. The long period (15-18 seconds) swell that shows up on the 11th and 17th is tiny at 2 ft, so it’s barely a ripple. There’s no standout, no hidden gem. It’s a full 16-day blank run.
Rusty.
