The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Mavericks is serving up over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, it's a tough start. The first few days are a write-off. We've got tiny, weak swell and the wind is all over the place – cross-onshore and choppy. The water is a warm 63°, which is a solid 4° warmer than usual for this time of year, so that's a treat if you're just floating around, but the waves are a no-go. You're looking at a gap of about four to five days with nothing worth paddling out for.
The real story begins to build towards the end of the first week and into the second. We start to see some energy creeping in around Thursday the 27th of August, with combined wave energy hitting 699 (moderate). But it's messy. The wind stays cross-onshore, and the conditions are just poor. The swell is mostly short-period, jumbled stuff.
The picks of the outlook shape up in the second week. The standout is the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September. We've got a clean 7ft WNW swell coming in with the wind directly offshore from the WNW. That's a major positive. The energy is strong at 829 (strong). This is going to be a proper, powerful groundswell, but remember, at 7ft, it's getting into the big stuff – not for the faint-hearted. For a spot like Mavericks, this is the window to watch. The period is 8 seconds, so it's a shorter-period groundswell, which actually might be a bit more forgiving on the takeoff than a super-long period one.
The afternoon of the 3rd gets bigger, 8ft, but the wind goes cross-onshore again, chopping it up. The morning of Friday the 4th is another solid option with 6ft WNW swell and light offshore wind from the west, but the energy is massive (1010). Again, this is expert territory.
A couple of days later, the morning of Sunday the 6th of September offers a more manageable 4ft WNW swell with a much nicer 13-second period and light winds. The energy is still strong (909), but the size is more approachable for a good crew. The only downside is a light cross-onshore wind, not glassy, but it's still a far better option than the slop we've been seeing.
In a nutshell, the first week is a total loss. The real action is the morning of the 3rd of September for the big-wave chargers, and the morning of the 6th of September for a slightly more manageable, but still powerful, session. Mavericks is a consistent spot, so when it's on, it's on, but this forecast is a long wait for a couple of days. Keep an eye on that Thursday the 3rd.
Rusty.
