The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here with the lowdown. We’ve got a 16-day stretch, and to be honest, Mavericks is looking grim for the first week and a half. The wind is the main culprit – a persistent cross-onshore flow from the NW or WNW at 10–12 mph, just shredding the small swell into chop. Water temp is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real chance to get wet is Saturday the 22nd. The morning shows a light onshore wind from the west at 6 mph, with a 4ft swell from the WNW at 8 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (223), but the forecast is marginal due to poor tide. It’s a throwaway session at best.
Sunday the 23rd morning is a repeat: light onshore from the WSW at 6 mph, with a 3ft WNW swell (268 energy). Still marginal.
Now, for the adrenaline junkies. Wednesday the 26th is when the ocean wakes up. The morning brings a 7ft WNW swell (8 seconds) and a combined energy of 1116 – that’s strong energy. But the wind is onshore from the W at 9 mph, and it turns cross-onshore later. Thursday the 27th morning is cleaner with clear skies but a cross-onshore from the WNW at 9 mph on a 6ft NW swell (1043 energy). Friday the 28th morning is similar with 7ft WNW swell and 1125 energy, but the wind is cross-onshore from the NW at 12 mph. This is expert territory only; anything over 8ft is for the big boys, and with that wind, it’s a messy beast. Honestly, with the onshore wind and that size, it’s looking better for kite surfing than paddling.
Monday the 31st morning offers a slight reprieve: clear skies, a light cross-onshore from the SSW at 6 mph, and a 6ft WNW swell (902 energy). It’s still a marginal call, but the lighter wind might just give you a clean-ish wave.
No true standouts here. The best bet for the brave might be Wednesday the 26th morning for the raw size, or Monday the 31st morning for slightly cleaner conditions on a smaller wave. Keep your expectations low.
Rusty.
