The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let's break down what's coming our way over the next couple of weeks.
Right now, it's a tough stretch. We're looking at nine days of poor conditions at Mavericks from the start. The wind is mostly cross-onshore or straight cross, making a mess of any chance at clean waves. The swell is small and weak, with the combined energy sitting in the hundreds for the first week, so it's nothing to get excited about. Leave the board on the rack.
Things start to shift around Thursday the 24th. The swell picks up from the SSW, and the wind eases off. The reports go from "poor" to "marginal," so there’s a chance. On Friday the 24th afternoon, a long-period SW groundswell with a 24-second period starts to push in, boosting that energy to 658. That kind of period means serious juice, but at Mavericks it’ll make for those long, drawn-out lines. The wind is still cross-shore, though, so it won’t be glassy.
The standout window is definitely Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th. Saturday morning is clean with a light cross-onshore breeze. The swell from the SSW has some real punch, with the combined energy hitting 1123 in the morning and 1142 in the afternoon. Swell height is around 3 ft in the morning, building to 4 ft in the afternoon, riding that very long 21-second period. This is proper groundswell. The best window is Saturday afternoon when the wind shifts to offshore, smoothing everything out. Sunday the 26th also looks good with light winds and a solid SW groundswell. Water temp is about 60°F, a touch warmer than average.
For the advanced crew, Saturday afternoon at Mavericks is the target. That offshore wind combined with the long-period SSW groundswell will make the place look its best. The direction isn’t bang-on the ideal WNW, but the power and the clean conditions will more than make up for it. It’s a big, heavy wave, and the crowd factor is "sometimes," so expect to share it. This is not for beginners; it’s for the experienced crew only.
After that, the surf fades back into marginal and poor conditions through the end of the month. The swells drop off and the wind gets messy again. It’s a short but sweet window in an otherwise quiet forecast.
Stay sharp, everyone.
Rusty.
