Alright gang, Rusty here. Let’s break it down.
We’re looking at a pretty grim stretch ahead for Mavericks. The whole 16-day window is a tough one, with no real standouts to get excited about. The swell is on offer, but the wind is just ruining everything. The water is sitting at 61°F right now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year — a real anomaly of 5°F — so you’ll be comfortable in a shorty, but that’s about the only good news.
We’ve got a gap right from the start, with no worthwhile surf. The first day with any real size is Thursday July 9th, with a 5ft swell from the WNW, but the wind is onshore and cross-on at 9-16 mph, making it a total mess. The wave energy is moderate at 635 (combined energy), and the period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s weak and choppy. Honestly, it’s poor out there.
Friday July 10th sees a bump in size to 7ft from the WNW, with the combined energy jumping to a strong 1412. But again, the wind is cross-on at 12 mph, and with a short 9-second period, it’s just a bumpy, closed-out mess. This is more of a kite surfing setup than a paddle surfing one.
The weekend isn’t much better. Saturday July 11th starts with a marginal 6ft from the WNW, but the wind is still cross-on at 9 mph. The combined energy is 770 (moderate), but the quality is poor. The pattern continues right through the next week: consistent 5ft to 7ft WNW swell, but always with that cross-on or onshore wind. The period stays short, between 8 and 9 seconds, so no real power behind it.
There’s a tiny shift around July 16th and 17th, where the period stretches out to 18 seconds, but the swell drops right off to 2ft. That’s a long-period groundswell, but it’s barely a ripple. The combined energy is still moderate (around 363-470), but with no size, it’s not worth paddling for.
From July 18th through to the 22nd, we’re in a real slump. Swell sizes hover around 2ft to 2ft, with periods dropping from 18 seconds down to 13 seconds. The combined energy drops to weak levels, as low as 174. The wind is mostly light, but the surf is just too small to do anything with.
The window closes with a slight uptick on July 23rd and 24th, with the swell coming back up to 5ft to 5ft from the WNW, period back to 8-9 seconds, and combined energy at 765. But the wind is still cross-on or onshore, so the quality is marginal at best.
Bottom line: This is a write-off for paddle surfing. The wind is relentless, the swell is messy, and the periods are too short to make anything of it. If you’re a kiter, the wind is there, but for the rest of us, save your energy.
Rusty.
